MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Teri Yuvadee HornDirector of Marketing & Admissions

I used to wake up in the morning dreading to go to work, sluggishly pulling myself out of bed and trying to think of the most creative sick excuses without following through. With Bangkok School of Management, it has been different. BSM has somehow managed to keep me smiling at work every day.

Welcome to the third edition of our

extended newsletter, INSPIRE!

Perhaps it has to do with the constant chaos that comes with the education business, but mostly I would like to thank the students, the staff, and our clients (both domestic and international) for adding color and passion to the usual gray cloud that hovers above office life. Although I will be leaving BSM in the next few days, I can assure you that the college will not disappear. BSM is growing and we will continue to surprise you. Most importantly, our students will surprise you.

I have always been a big fan of Hemingway, so I’ll leave you with one of my favorite lines: “I will never go in a boat again without salt or limes.” – Santiago, The Old Man and The Sea

To all my business students: start small. Serve coffee, answer phone calls, carry bags, write reports, clean the toilet, and observe. Only then will you know why the wind is blowing a certain way, how firmly to grip a line, and why it is important to know where the sun is in the sky when fishing. With experience, theory, and practice, you will better manage your work, your staff, and your future company. Don’t be afraid to fail or make mistakes. Have some humor, be proactive, and stay positive! Best of luck as you continue your education, graduate, and become global business leaders in the coming years. I’ll be cheering for you!

Read and enjoy! If you have any feedback, comments, questions, or would like to share your thoughts, please feel free to submit them to [email protected]. We appreciate your support and are happy to have you as a reader of INSPIRE!

Till we meet again. Toodle-loo!

Fail to Plan… Plan to Fail By: Dr. Edward Roy Krishnan

While many look forward to AEC’s economic integration as an exciting phenomenon, there are those who doubt its capability to bring about real prosperity to countries in the ASEAN community. There are mixed reactions from different people and organizations regarding what is to come. But one thing is certain; everyone is part of this big event, whether they want it or not.

When countries or organizations or even individuals become aware of an impending change, it is natural for them to talk about it, plan for it, and make the necessary arrangements to meet the change as conscientiously as possible. No one plans to fail in the face of a supposedly constructive change. Similarly, we see all around us,

Fail to Plan...Plan to Fail continued...various kinds of reactions from countries, organizations and people in the wake of AEC’s much anticipated economic integration plans. However, what does real “preparation” mean? My friend once told me, “what sets successful people apart from unsuccessful people is that the former ANTICIPATE and PREPARE, while the latter, fail to do both.”

In other words, we cannot prepare well, and correctly, if we do not anticipate correctly.Anticipating is the act of predicting something before it even happens. It is no stranger for those in the field of business because every business venture undertaken is founded upon predictions of some sort; i.e., prediction about sales, profit, sustainability, etc.

This is also why a business proposal or a project plan always involves projections of what may come to pass. Shareholders often rely on sound predictions before they decide to invest money into a new business or project, with the hope that the predictions would come to pass, and they would earn profit from their investments. Understanding and using the power of anticipation ensures realistic preparation and leads to enormous success.

Tips for effective/accurate anticipation:- Prediction is a high level mental process, involving analysis, synthesis and evaluation skills – hence one should learn and employ these skills in predicting future outcomes; many people call these the “critical thinking skills” which are commonly taught at good business schools worldwide, including at Bangkok School of Management! - Prediction is accurate when we rely on hard data, facts and figures, rather than subjective hear-say and opinions; the former ensures accuracy, while the latter misrepresents reality and may skew preparation and therefore, results in failure- Since collecting accurate data is time-consuming, a sound prediction requires ample time. Rushing the process may lead to disastrous results in the end; hence the saying, “slow and steady wins the race” may hold true to the exercise of making accurate predictions- Accuracy in prediction may increase many folds if experts are consulted with; as the saying goes, “It is good to learn from one’s experience, but it is even better to learn from others’ experiences”. This prevents resource, time and energy wastage and significantly increases success rates

While no one knows the future, the past and present (and our knowledge about them), determine the future. Hence, with a good presence of mind, we could utilize our increased understanding and perception of “what was” and “what is” to make sound judgments about what to anticipate (what is to come), consequently how to best prepare for the future!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.My name is Pierre Le Levier and I am 23 years old. I come from France, more precisely the west coast of France, which is close to the Atlantic Ocean. Currently I am a student of BSM and Northumbria University.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY STUDYING AT BSM?I am studying the bachelor (Honors) top up programme in Business and Management from Northumbria University.

HOW HAS THE PROGRAMME BEEN LIKE SO FAR?The programme is going well so far. I have in my options five modules and one dissertation to achieve. These different modules talk about management topics, leadership, case studies and strategy. From now, I have completed four modules and my bachelor will finish in October 2014.

SPOTLIGHT: Pierre Le Levier

Life. Music. Travel. ONETOUCH has been making headlines in the music scene all over Bangkok. Behind Onetouch is duo BSM student Pierre Le Levier (left), a drummer, and his friend, a DJ. Follow their crazy travels and love of music on their youtube/facebook!

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAMME TO OTHER STUDENTS? Yes! The programme is really useful when you want to study a good programme and at the same time do your own external activities. You have time to complete the different modules, dissertation, along with other things. Teachers at BSM are also really talented and this bachelor is recognised everywhere. There is a real opportunity for students to get a good diploma and reach their goals.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE BSM?Before coming to Bangkok School of Management, I studied in France where I obtained a Higher Diploma in Communication.

WE HEARD THAT YOU HAVE BEEN STUDYING AND STARTING YOU OWN BUSINESS AT THE SAME TIME. WHAT ARE YOU UP TO?I work with my partner in France and also in Thailand as DJ and musician. We have a duo called Onetouch and our label is called Paka. We have played in Thailand for Sofitel So Hotel, Pullman Hotel, St Regis Hotel and other rooftops and nice places. You can check our facebook fan page ‘’onetouch ‘’ and our youtube channel ‘’paka tv ‘’.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND ONETOUCH/PAKA?It’s a friend story. My partner is also my best friend. We started in France back in 2009. My friend played alone as a Dj and I played in another band as a drummer. One day, we decided to create our concept. Our world around this project is about life,

music and travel. We did a lot of videos on our youtube channel about Thailand, our different trips and music experiences. Life is beautiful, we have to enjoy it!

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WORKING IN THAILAND AND FRANCE?The main difference is about people. For example, Bangkok is more crazy than Paris in terms of the crowd. People here are also more connected. You always see Thai people and foreigners with a phone – chatting on Line, posting pictures on Instagram, putting a text on facebook. So the connection in Thailand is faster and easier, and it is really relevant when you work as musicians.

HOW HAS YOUR BUSINESS GROWN IN THE PAST YEAR WHILE IN BKK?Thanks to Bangkok, we now have new contacts and a lot of projects, which will be announce very soon!

ANYTHING EXCITING WE SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO WITH ONE TOUCH?Keep posted to our facebook and youtube channels! We have three future video clips coming out with two students from BSM. One is about a boxer who travelled from Ayuthaya to Bangkok to catch the number one. The story is about him and his goal. Alex Blin is the main character and he was awesome to work with. The other project features Shahi Hamdy, a girl who is walking around Bangkok and looking for someone. We also did this project with a professional trumpeter from Scotland, so stay tuned!

WOW! SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF WORK! HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO DO BOTH STUDY AND WORK AT THE SAME TIME?I wake up early and do the best with my friends!

ANY ADVICE FOR OTHERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO START UP A BUSINESS LIKE YOURS? The advice that I can give is to try to meet the right people. Bangkok is full of good people for many projects, so to start up a business is possible. Everything is possible!

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?If you are looking for a good school experience which allows you to meet the beautiful people of Bangkok, don’t hesitate, come and join BSM!
