  • Perhaps youve heard that Vermont has more craft brewer-ies per capita than any other state. Of course, we only have 626,000 people but our 29 breweries (and counting) keep us well sated. Our secrets are out, too: Beer lovers from

across the country make pilgrimages to the Northeast Kingdom to visit Greensboro Bends innovative Hill Farmstead Brewery. Another beer produced in Vermont, Heady Topper, earned a perfect 100 score from the discerning readers of Beer Advocate no small feat.

Regardless of season, the Green Mountain State welcomes beer-brained tourists with open arms. The Vermont Brewers Association hands out punch cards to people who want to trek to all the states breweries. But even if youre here for just a day or two, microbrewer-ies abound not far from Burlington and with some offering deli-cious pub fare, as well.

Be sure to call ahead for hours, as they can shift with the season.

Thirsty traveler? How about a brewery tour?

By Corin HirsCH

  • bUrlingTon AreALong before the craft-beer craze, there was Vermont Pub & Brewery. Twenty-fi ve years ago, visionary brewer Greg Noonan opened the states fi rst brewpub, and probably every Burlingtonian at some time has taken a seat on its College Street patio, pint of fresh beer in hand. Its a great spot on a sunny day, or on a warm night listening to live music. Indoors during colder months, the pub scene is lively and friendly.

Nearby on St. Paul Street, the Zero Gravity brewery is tucked out of sight within American Flatbread Burlington Hearth but at the eaterys long bar, you can quaff some of the best beers in Vermont, from rauchbier to Belgian-style dubbel.

Another treasure can be found in Burlingtons South End: Switchback Brew-ing, which off ers samples of its signature yeasty ale and tours every Saturday. A mile further still, in South Burlington, is the carnival-like Magic Hat Brewing, where a kaleidoscope of samples is always on off er inside the whimsical Artifac-tory. You need to see it to understand.

Further down Route 7 in Shelburne, Magic Hat alum Matt Cohen runs Fiddle-head Brewing. In his friendly, industrial-looking tasting room, staff ers off er pours of their fl agship, hoppy Fiddlehead IPA, along with seasonal brews. Fancy more than a taste? Tote a growler into the wood-fi red pizzeria next door.

  • middlebUryAt Drop-In Brewing housed in a former plumbing-supply warehouse Scottish-born Steve Parkes wields American hops for his crisp signature beer, Sunshine and Hoppiness. Sample it and other creations inside the tasting room, where you just might glimpse Steve brewing behind a viewing window.

ST. AlbAnS14th Star Brewing Co. may be discreetly tucked into a St. Albans side street, but the Army vet who founded this nanobrewery, Steve Gagner, produces big fl avors: three IPAs, a brown ale and a few other interesting beers. He pours samples or fi lls growlers inside the cozy tasting room on Thurs-day and Friday nights.

SToWe/WATerbUry/morriSvilleStowe may be known for its skiing, but this resort town produces great beer, too. Up the Mountain Road, brewer Will Gilson turns out balanced, German-style beers at Crop Bistro & Brewery, which are tapped in the pub and pair elegantly with Crops hearty, farm-to-fork fare think burgers or warm kale salad topped with pork-belly cracklins. Further up in the hills at the Trapp Family Lodge, the brewery is known for its lagers a black variety among them. All fl ow freely in a caf-bakery that also delivers hearty bratwurst and gorgeous mountain views.

The growing burg of Morrisville is about 10 minutes drive north of Stowe. Here, Matt Nadeau of Rock Art Brewery counts at least 20 beers in his roster, some made with spruce tips or smoked grains. In an industrial park on the edge of town, the guys who run Lost Nation Brewing Jamie Griffi th and Allen Van Anda off er eclectic styles including saison and gose inside a blood-red taproom. If you stop in Thursday through Sunday, youll also be rewarded with tasty pub fare such as house-cured charcuterie and gnocchi with snails and chorizo.

norTHeAST KingdomFor the truly adventurous or just plain beer-crazy the Kingdom is a two-hour drive from Burlington, but the area has some innovative brewers. Hill Farmsteads Shaun Hill has attracted worldwide attention, as well as crowds, for his pitch-perfect bottled beers, sold in the shop here. A handful of other nanobreweries is scattered around the hills, as well, from Grateful Hands Brewing in Cabot (open two Saturdays each month) to Trout River Brewing and Covered Bridge Craft Brewery in Lyndonville. Theyre small-scale, homespun operations, so be sure to call ahead before you make the drive.

Chefs CornerSouth End, 208 Flynn Avenue, Burlington, 660-7111; and Chefs Corner Caf & Bakery, 2121 Essex Road, Williston, 878-5524The two Chefs Corner eateries owned by chef Jozef Harrewyn are casual, but his bowl of sweet-and-silky butternut squash bisque is worthy of a white tablecloth. The Belgium-born, South Africa-reared chef honed his culinary skills in Antwerp and Versailles before bring-ing them to Vermont.

If youre not into cream soup, try Harrewyns Italian wedding po-tage, filled with beefy meatballs. Theres always at least one vegetar-ian option, too.

Feldmans Bagels, 660 Pine Street, Burlington, 540-0474Even if you dont have a Yiddishe Bubbe, the dill-flecked chicken broth of this matzoh ball soup will strike a comforting chord. Chunky carrots, onions and celery melt in the salty soup, while chunks of local Misty Knoll Farms chicken make it hearty. But the main attraction is the kneidlach itself, in all its tender glory.

You wont need to supplement this soup with one of the cafs perfectly chewy, New York-style bagels, but you probably wont be able to help yourself.

Vermont Sports Grill, 1705 Williston Road, South Burlington, 860-2009This locally owned sports bar can keep you au courant on your favorite games, but theres always soup with that, no matter what you order a cup comes with every entre on the menu. So whether you order Meatloaf Mountain or lobster pie, youll get something extra to stick to your ribs.

The best bang for your buck is the chicken potpie, a rich, herba-ceous stew topped with puff pastry. Or you can slurp creamy seafood chowder filled with shrimp, crab, scallops and clams.

no matter your point of origin, stepping off the plane into Vermonts winter wonderland is an experience. It can be so white, so clean and so cold. Travelers this time of year are likely bundled up, but even so, a hot bowl of soup provides a warm welcome. Whether youre looking for something homey and hearty or a bowl of haute cuisine, local restaurants are waiting to ward off the chill and weve got a few favor-

ites to recommend.

  • of hearty warmers at this take-out or sit-down caf. Most days, a hand-chalked blackboard lists half a dozen options. If youre lucky, youll hit a day when the carrot-rosemary soup is available.

Its mouth feel is so rich, you wont believe this soup has no butter. Other wholesome indulgences include lamb and barley, Moroccan sweet

potato and classics such as chicken noodle and potato leek.

    A World of flAvor

Pho Hong, 325 North Winooski Avenue, Burlington, 865-8031If not done right, Vietnamese noodle soup can be one-note. Thats not the case at this popular BYO restaurant. Roasted beef bones provide the sturdy base to which chef Lan Hong adds intricate tastes of anise, cinnamon, cloves, carda-mom and coriander.

Plates of fresh mix-ins such as basil and cilantro add a sparkling taste of summer. This big bowl is sure to bolster you against the cold.

Leunigs Bistro & Caf, 115 Church Street, Burlington, 863-3759Sometimes the perfect meal means nothing more than an excellent iteration of a dish youve had a hundred times before. Such is lunch or dinner that includes chef Donnell Collins standout onion soup gratine.

The bistro classic boasts an ultra-rich beef broth, sweetened with wine. A blend of Alpine cheeses crackles and stretches over the croutons, which soak up every bit of caramelized onion flavor. If meat is not your thing, try the equally delicious soupe au pistou, a Leunigs staple.

Farahs Place, 147 North Winooski Avenue, Burlington, 540-3093Ready for a kick-aash meal? Persian soup, known as aash, is an uncommon way to eat your meal with a spoon. Tehran native Farah Oberlender always has at least one vegetarian soup on the menu.

Her standard is aash reshteh, a salty broth green with parsley, spinach and cilantro. Beans and fluffy wheat noodles bolster the potage, while a topping of whey and fried mint adds Eastern flavor.

On Wednesday or Thursday, spoon out all the soup you can eat as part of a buffet dinner that includes grilled meats, Iranian breads, dips and desserts, all for $15.

Ramen, 131 Main Street, Burlington, 863-2244Besides a few small plates, soup is the only thing on the menu here, and chef Brian Jung is dedicated to perfecting it. Dont confuse his thick, chewy noodles with the dehydrated ones that come in a Styrofoam cup. The ramen soups at this casual restaurant are composed of long-simmered stocks made from local animals.

The best of the milky-thick broths are made with a pork base, particularly the curry version, which stirs just a bit of heat into the meaty soup.

  • STone HUT, SToWeOne of the most coveted reservations in Vermont is for a night at this simple bunkhouse near the summit of 4393-foot Mount Mansfi eld. Why? Because dwellers get fi rst tracks at Stowe Mountain Resort after spending the night here, not to mention the thrill of exploring the upper trails with headlamps and maybe telling ghost stories by candlelight while other skiers are way down below.

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936, the Stone Hut has a woodstove but no electricity, cooking facilities or heat, so be prepared for a rustic winter camping experience. (Bathrooms and run-ning water are available in a ski patrol building just 100 feet away, and the Fourrunner Quad chairlift can ferry up backpacks until 4 p.m. dur-ing skiing season.) The Stone Hut has four single, wooden bunks and four full-size bunks, all with mattresses, and theres a large wooden dining table. Oh, the stories it could tell.$195 per person overnight; fi rst-come, fi rst-served reservations. Info, 802-253-4010. vtstateparks.com

Its a mile up from the cross-country skiing and snowshoeing center, and there are breathtaking views of Camels Hump from the cabins balcony. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers can pop in for a quick break during the day (bring your own snacks and drinks) or spend the night (bring sleeping bags, matches and kindling for the woodstove; fi rewood is provided). The cabin sleeps up to 12 and off ers no refunds for no-shows. As the proprietors explain, Inclement weather is part of the fun of the cabin.$50 to $100 per overnight; reservations required. Pourquoi? Sure, you could spend an hour and 15 minutes snowshoeing or skinning (climbing uphill on skis with special sticky fabric on the bottoms) to the cranberry-red lodge, which is open 24 hours a day at the top of Gadd Peak. But most attendees of the Remote Fireside Wine Dinners at Sugarbush choose to ride a 12-passenger Piston Bully snowcat, nicknamed the Lincoln Limo.

Its a 15-minute ascent through the dark to reach the lodge, where youll find a wood-stoked fire and a four-course meal that might include, for example, garlic soup and zucchini risotto. Dessert is served back at the base area at Timbers, and guests can either ride in the Lincoln Limo or ski down its an electrifying night-time drop down Snowball and Spring Fling. • The woods are lovely, dark and deep, wrote Vermonts first poet laureate, Robert Frost, in Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. But the states white-blanketed landscape is best explored in daylight, and theres no better time than at the Green Mountain Clubs annual trails festival.

Regardless of weather, the Green Mountain Club is the primary caretaker of Vermonts Long Trail the oldest long-distance hiking path in America. The nonprofit not only protects and maintains backcountry lands, it hosts numerous events throughout the year. Weve all been there: Our flight is delayed or canceled, so we rush up to the gate agent to ask questions, beg to be put on another flight, or simply vent. Its Amane Abdis job to deal with passengers like us. In addition to

checking people in and dealing with their logistics, she fields their ques-tions, concerns, requests and, yes, complaints. For about a year, 22-year-old Abdi has worked as a gate and ticket agent for United Airlines at Burlington International Airport. And shes got the calm demeanor and empathy required to handle the often-irritable flying public.

Abdi, who grew up in Seattle, moved to the Burlington area with her family a little more than a year ago. Since she started working at BTV, shes peeled herself out of bed at 2:50 a.m. every workday to make the trek from her home in Shelburne to her shift, which begins at the ungodly hour of 3:30 a.m. and often doesnt end until 4 p.m.

In addition to her job, Abdi is a student at the Community College of Vermont. She hopes someday to become a nurse.

In the meantime, she enjoys her job at the airport. Its good prepara-tion for a medical profession, Abdi says, which is sure to include similar long hours on her feet, problem solving and, most importantly, keeping the people around her calm.

What are your duties as a gate agent? Its not just helping the passengers, its paperwork and making sure everything is accurate. You change seats, you make sure youre listening to what the passengers are asking. There are a lot of things to do.

Tell me about a recent challenge youve faced on the job.The other day there was a passenger with an oxygen mask, and we had an over-sell fl ight, which means we had, like, 52 passengers and 50 seats. It didnt say that [she had health issues] in her reservation. So when we saw her, all of us just looked at each other and thought, Oh my god.

We just made it happen. We got her on the aircraft and pulled some-one else out and rebooked them for the next day. Situations like that happen all the time.

Youre a student, too. What are you studying?I want to be a nurse, so there are a lot of requirements. Im taking math and psychology right now. If Im good with passengers, I can defi nitely do this [work as a nurse]. You most defi nitely have to be really calm working at United. Like, very calm.

People dont tend to be calm in airports. They are not. The fi rst thing they expect is something to go wrong Theres always going to be a problem that you need to solve.

So youre a problem solver, a coordinator and a calmer-downerYeah. Its like, I can take care of you! When I started, I was all over the place. Now Ive seen it all. Theres nothing new.

What do you wish passengers understood better that might make your job easier? There are always going to be irregular ops [operations]. I wish passen-gers could understand that were people. Youre not the only passenger were dealing with. Were going to be dealing with everyone else with the same stories, especially when delays occur and cancelations occur. A lot of the times Ill be at the gate, sometimes by myself, and [a passen-ger] will be dealing with me one person but Ill be dealing with 71 passengers. But it comes with the job. Youre the face of the company.

Has working as a gate agent changed the way you travel when youre a passenger?Im more calm toward the people [who work the gate] now. I dont get all angry. Its more like, Oh, I understand, let me try to make this persons day.
