  • D o you want a taste of Vermont? Few places in the state offer a wider range of foods than the Burlington Farmers Mar-ket. From May to October, the Queen Citys cen-trally located City Hall Park fills up each Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year, the market has 90 regular vendors up from last years 68 and the city has agreed to close down part of St. Paul Street, between Main and College, to allow extra room for the selling of foods ranging from foraged wild goods to locally raised crickets served in lol-lipops flavored with maple to roasted trail mix.

Veggies, herbs and humanely raised beef and pork abound at many booths. Its a boon to locals who buy their dinner provisions for the week, but travelers can find plenty of to-go snacks, as well. Vegetarians can dine on raw, vegan cuisine at Glow Moms Kitchen or try a veggie patty slathered in FolkFoods spicy Master Sauce. The meat-minded will be attracted to the smoky local pork and mac n cheese served at Orsinis BBQ. And there are charcoal-grilled burgers from Stony Pond Farm, with a healthy fermented tea called kombucha to wash them down.

As shoppers fill their bags with flowers, bread and specialty foods, theyll wend their way past numerous delicious treats. Latin American cuisine is represented by A Little Peruvian, and MPT, which sells Panamanian-style tamales and roasted pork. Jing Jis Foods serves up Chinese-style dumplings and egg rolls, while Tibetan Cuisine and Serchans Ethnic Cuisine offer momos and noodle dishes from the Himalayas. The globe-trotting continues with organic hummus and tabbouleh from Chick Peace; and curried goat, jerk chicken and meat-filled patties from Jamaican Island DLites.

As visitors leave the market for the Church Street Marketplace, Burlingtons lively pedestrian mall, they can take in some nonedible arts, too. Talented local musicians perform every week, and Burlington City Arts Artists Market offers arts and crafts, from candles to jewelry to leather goods to paintings. Kids or kids at heart can even get their faces painted.

Summer is short in Burlington, so come and get it now. 0

  • F rom above, Vermonts fi elds can resemble a quilt of greens, at least at certain times of the year. A closer look reveals many of those patches to be working farms, the backbone of Vermonts robust farm-to-table culture.

Vermonters have long stopped at local farms to pick up eggs or veggies, yet few outsiders have had that experience. Enter Chris Howell, who founded Vermont Farm Tours in 2009 after an epiphany he had while traveling in Italy. I noticed that tourism there was built around food, place and farms. Youd visit a region and learn about it by tasting what the farmers grew, he observes. In Vermont, we have the same number of food producers as in Piedmont and Tuscany. I thought, Gosh, wouldnt it be cool to set some-thing up to share the story of Vermont food and farms?

Over the next year, Howell reached out to farmers and built itinerar-ies. For a full-day tour, he picks up guests in his Subaru for an eight-hour excursion to three farms south of Burlington, stopping for a picnic lunch. Guests get to meet farmers, hear their stories whether its how they make a block of cheddar or how they tend cows and sometimes even try their hand at milking a goat or pulling up a beet.

The jaunts have proved so popular that Howell has added tours of cheese makers, wineries and the urban farms of Burlingtons Intervale. He also created an annual bike tour on the Champlain Islands with stops at art studios, farm stands and vineyards.

At every farm, I try to do a tasting so that you create long-lasting memories of that place by en-gaging all of your senses. To me, the most powerful senses are taste and smell, says Howell. 0

  • Water may put out blazes, but in ancient Chinese iconography, the reverse is also true: Fire-breathing dragons hold sway over the water. Burlingtons Dragon Boat Festival, now in its sixth year, has turned that control of the element into a sense of empowerment: Dozens of teams of 20 paddlers each conquer the waves of Lake Champlain on canoe-style boats decorated with images of the mythical creatures. But those who take first place in the 300-meter sprint races arent the only winners; some 150 of the competitors are breast-cancer survivors. The festival, which includes a traditional flower ceremony, a Parade of Dragons and live music, raises funds for Survivorship NOW and Dragonheart Vermont. With $300,000 raised for charity since 2006, this event is growing like ... wildfire.

  • Because summer is our shortest season, Vermonters take it very seriously. For proof, look no further than the bounty of festivals and music series that take place in various outdoor locales around the state virtually every week from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Celebrating art, food, culture and music, and nestled in a picturesque and convenient setting, the Lake Champlain Maritime Festival at Waterfront Park in Burlington epitomizes why we love our outdoor fests. For starters, this years headlining performers include gypsy punkers Gogol Bordello, Nashvilles Americana-folkies Old Crow Medicine Show, reunited Vermont jam band Strangefolk and bluesy songwriter Citizen Cope. Thats in addition to the numerous and often free concerts and family-oriented cultural exhibits on display during the day. The unbeatable location, on the shores of Lake Champlain facing the Adirondacks, is oh-so-close to shopping and dining in downtown Burlington.

  • R obert McEwing is a busy man, currently jug-gling two full-time jobs at the airport. Hes been director of planning and development since 1990, and in January 2011 took the reins as interim director of aviation when his predecessor became Vermonts Secretary of Transportation. Now 77, McEwing is a local native who graduated from the University of Vermont and left the day after, he says. A career that includes 20 years working for the Federal Aviation Administration has taken him to Alaska, Georgia and upstate New York, then back to Vermont when our oldest child went into sixth grade, he says. My wife wanted our children to grow up in Vermont.

Describe your job as director of planning and development. It involves developing plans for the future of the airport, including major projects such as the overlay and completion of the major runway, a $23 million project. Also the expansion of the parking garage at the north end, a $12 million project. Then there is the acquisition of land adjacent to the airport that is af-fected by noise, at $5 million per year, and other improvements to the airfield and infrastructure. We just completed an update of the airports master plan, Vision 2030 you can see it on our website. Its a road map to help us with future decisions.

Say its 2030. What changes have taken place at the Burlington airport? If growth occurs as predicted, Id expect to see additional gates for aircraft. Id anticipate the

counter check-ins would occur on the second floor, baggage claim on the first. There will be a new road to the west connecting with the interstate, a second-level road leading to the terminal for departures, and an expan-sion of the terminal to provide additional services such as food, gift shops and kiosks. Check-ins will probably be done almost 100 percent online. There will also be an expansion of cargo facilities.

What are the responsibilities of the director of aviation?Overall management of the airport including coordination of airlines and tenants, and promot-ing air-service development.

Is there a search underway for a permanent, full-time director? Yes. It will probably take several more months.

What have you learned working two full-time jobs at once? There arent enough hours in the day, and there are many priorities. Its difficult to get everything done.

Im assuming you dont care to continue that crazy schedule?I didnt say that, but I dont par-ticularly care for the long hours. But Im a workaholic, so I like a lot of projects going on at the same time.

When youre back to having just one job, what will you do with all your spare time?Enjoy life. Do some more travel-ing. Go to Alaska again. 0

Voyager. Re-tourner en Alaska. 0
