TRAINING COURSE SCHEDULE

The course is full-time over 4 weeks. Course hours are: Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday - 10 am to 5 pm with one hour for lunch, Thursday and Friday - 10 am to

1 pm followed by teaching your 1 hour class during the afternoon. Teaching practice

starts at 2 pm every Thursday and Friday. When you arrive, you will be given a de-

tailed course timetable and your teaching practice schedule.

The course starts at 9:30 am sharp. Please try to arrive at 9:15 am because you will

have to sign the register and hand in your signed course payment receipts.

Are you already in Argentina? If you are, ignore this section.

Your passport

Make sure that your passport will have at least 6 months life left on it when you

travel to Argentina. If it doesn't, you will have problems.

Entry visas

European Union, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand pass-

port holders IGNORE THIS SECTION. You DO NOT need a tourist

visa to enter Argentina.

If you DO NOT have a passport from a European Union country, the USA, Canada,

Australia or New Zealand then please make sure that you do the following:

Check with your country’s Argentinean embassy or consulate to find out what your

specific entry requirements are to cover the 28 day TESOL TEFL course period.

Before you send a deposit you must check with your nearest Argentinean embassy

or consulate as to exactly what you need to do in order to apply for a tourist visa to

enter Argentina.

To attend the course you must have a tourist visa that will allow you to stay in Ar-

gentina for 5 weeks. Make sure you have your visa BEFORE you send your deposit.

Mandatory

Your passport with at least 6 months left to run on it (with a visa if you need

one – refer to the visa section for more information).

A round-trip or onward travel ticket if you aren't already in Argentina. If you

arrive only with a one-way ticket and passport control asks to see your return

ticket, they will force you to buy a return ticket on the spot. This will be very

expensive. The chances of this happening are unlikely but not impossible so

play it safe.

Your signed course payment receipts.

If you have a degree, a copy of your transcripts (official or unofficial) or a copy

of your degree certificate.

Recommended items for the TEFL course

Laptop computer - Check that it is wireless B/G compatible. We give you the

codes to connect to our free WIFI but you are responsible for configuring your

laptop and making sure it works properly and connects.

Mobile/Cell phone - If you have a tri-band phone - BRING IT. You will find that it

is cheaper to buy a pay-as-you-go card for your phone than it is to buy a new

phone. Being contactable by phone is VERY important. Good local phone com-

panies: CTI, Personal or Telefónica.

All foreigners can use Argentinean national health, but we HIGHLY RECOM-

MEND that you take out personal accident and health insurance.

Scissors, notebook, glue, pens and pencils, paper clips, blue-tac (don't forget

to put your scissors and other sharp objects in your check-in baggage)

English-Spanish phrase book and/or dictionary

Presentable clothes for teaching and job interviews. Business suits are re-

If you plan to stay and look for TEFL jobs you may need your birth certificate

(original or a notarised copy) and original or copies of your University or College

qualifications (degree certificate or transcripts)

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?

There are no specific dress rules when you attend class, but we ask that you respect

your peers and the fact that you are a visitor in another country.

There are specific dress requirements for teaching practice sessions that conform

with the local working and professional culture. You are expected to dress smart

casual as per the following guidelines.

Women

Shoulders should be covered (blouses with sleeves). No low-cut necklines or very

short skirts. Bare midriffs must not be visible, even when lifting arms up. Open-toed

shoes are acceptable, but no hiking boots, sneakers/trainers or beach sandals.

Men

Long pants/trousers. NO jeans. Short or long-sleeved shirts with a collar (a tie is not

required). Loafers or dress shoes are acceptable (no sandals, hiking boots or sneak-

ers/trainers). Long hair should be tied back.

Other wardrobe planning should be based on the seasonal temperatures mentioned

in the Local Weather Conditions section shown later in this document. Don't forget

that Argentina is in the southern hemisphere so the seasons are reversed, Decem-

ber is in summer and June is in winter.

ARRIVING: AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION

The Buenos Aires international airport is called Ezeiza and is situated about 50 kilo-

metres from central Buenos Aires. If you've opted for one of our accommodation

SHUTTLE BUS—60 TO 90 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

Buses are run by Manuel Tienda Léon and cost about 55 Pesos (10 USD). They leave

every thirty minutes from 6:00 am to 00:45 am They are a quick, reliable and cheap

way to get downtown. The buses drop you at the company's central office on the

corner of Avenida Madero and Calle San Martín. You will then need to take a taxi

from the bus terminal to your accommodation.

TAXI—60 TO 90 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

Go to the official taxi stand in front of the exit in the main hall. A ride downtown will

cost about 120 Pesos and you have to pay up-front. You will then be taken to your

taxi by an official. DO NOT go with people who walk up to you and offer you a taxi,

they are not licensed and are not insured to take passengers.

LIMO—60 TO 90 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

EBC can arrange a private car service to pick you up you at the airport and transfer

you directly to your accommodation, the cost will vary slightly depending on your

final destination but will cost between 120 to 200 Pesos (about 30 to 45 USD).

Please email us if you want this option. Private transfer must be arranged at least 1

week before your scheduled arrival and you will need to inform us of all your flight

details.

WHAT IS THE TEFL JOB MARKET IN BUENOS AIRES LIKE?

The TEFL job market in Argentina is always good.

Don't delay looking for a job until you start running out of your savings. The best

time to look is when you finish the course and we get your resume sent out to the

schools that we supply teachers to in Buenos Aires. Most schools do not care wheth-

er you have a work permit or not.

It is usually more difficult to find work outside Buenos Aires during the school year

(March to December). If you want to work outside Buenos Aires it is best to apply

for work just before the new school year starts. This could mean that you have to

work in Buenos Aires for a few months until the start of the new year, but you'll find

living and working in Buenos Aires is a great experience.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SALARY FOR AN ENGLISH TEACHER?

The average salary in Buenos Aires is about 45 to 60 Pesos per hour. This varies de-

pending on what type of school or company you work for and whether you work full

or part-time. We do not recommend that you accept less than 45 Pesos an hour

unless the school is also throwing in some other incentives like free Spanish lessons.

How many of the TEFL graduates actually find work in Argentina?

All of our course graduates who have wanted to work in Argentina have been able

to secure teaching positions.

MORE ABOUT BUENOS AIRES

Local transportation

Central Buenos Aires is a great place to see on foot, but like all capital cities it is

large, so if you want to go further afield use the public transport.

Public transport in Buenos Aires is safe and efficient, the "Subte" (Subway/

Underground) is the easiest to use. It serves the city centre and northern areas. To

reach the rest of the city or go outside it's best to use the bus service known locally

as the “colectivos”. There are also plenty of taxis which, surprisingly for a capital

city, are not very expensive. You can easily get to our TEFL course training centre by

public transport. There is also a commuter rail system that services some parts of

Buenos Aires. Tickets are priced on a distance travelled basis, but compared to the

US, Canada, UK etc. the cost is still very cheap.

Shopping

Buenos Aires has probably the best shopping areas in all of Argentina. There are

many areas containing malls and shopping districts full of different types of stores.

Unless you are in a street market where you may be able to haggle prices, the cost

of items in stores is as marked. The main shopping area in Buenos Aires is located on

“Florida”, a street about 6 blocks away from the training centre.

COMMON-SENSE WARNING2: The currency symbol for the Argentinian Pesos is

the same as the US Dollar sign i.e. $ If you see this on an item (e.g. $10) and the per-

son in the shop tells you it’s 10 US Dollars, walk away. Items that are priced in US

Dollars are almost always marked as $US or US$.

Beaches and swimming

For the best and cleanest beaches in the area you’ll have to take a trip to Mar de

Plata. A resort town to the south of Buenos Aires. Air conditioned tour buses run

between Buenos Aires and Mar de Plata.

Football/Soccer

Boca Juniors and River Plate are both premiere league clubs in Argentina. Both

clubs are famous. Boca Juniors play in “La Bombonera” in the la Boca district. Some

notable players are Carlos Tevez, Fernando Gago and Diego Maradona. River Plate

play in the “Monumental stadium” in the fashionable district of Belgrano. Some

notable players are Alfredo di Stefano and Hernan Crespo.

Local weather conditions

Don't forget that Argentina is in the southern hemisphere so the seasons are re-

versed, December is in the summer and June is in the winter.

QUESTIONS ABOUT LIVING IN BUENOS AIRES

What are the average housing and living expenses when working in Argentina?

Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers or with

Argentinians, and of course it depends on where you choose to live. A room in a shared

house or apartment in a good neighbourhood costs about 1,200 to 2,000 Pesos a

month. It is fair to say that TEFL teachers are quite well-paid by local standards in Argen-

tina, which means they can afford a comfortable standard of living.

A starting local (Argentinian) school teacher earns around 3,000 Pesos a month while a

TEFL teacher can expect to earn between 4,000 and 7,000 Pesos per month working 20

to 30 hours per week. While this may not sound a lot by international standards, it

means you can live quite comfortably in Buenos Aires. As a rule of thumb, for everyday

articles, 1 Peso in Argentina generally buys the equivalent of 1 Dollar in the USA.

How much money should I bring?

If you do not arrange your accommodation through EBC, you should budget to spend

between $US1,000 (Spartan life) to $US1,500 (comfy life) for the period covering the 28

day course. If you want to stay and work in Buenos Aires or the rest of Argentina you

should budget around $US1,000 to cover yourself until your first pay-check.

What if I get sick in Buenos Aires?

If you need urgent medical attention, you can use the Argentinean National Health ser-

vice. There are a number of insurance companies that offer their own health insurance

services at a costs vary but most have 100% coverage of all medical costs. We recom-

mend that you get health insurance before you travel.

The four week, intensive EBC International TEFL Certificate course is a

practical and thorough course designed for candidates with no previ-

ous experience teaching English. It is also suitable for candidates with

some experience but no formal training in the TEFL TESOL field.

The EBC online TEFL course offers weekly tutorial and feedback ses-

sions live with your trainer and even better, 6 hours of observed

teaching practice given to real English language learners.

Our EBC hybrid TEFL course is the same as the online course except

that you do your teaching practice with us in Madrid.

EBC is an accredited centre of the College of Teachers and awards

TEFL certificates that are internationally recognised.
