An energy audit would normally cost you approximately $350 plus travel expenses, but we are offering it FREE.

What is an Energy Audit? An Energy Audit is a process where the energy effi ciency of your home is measured and evaluated by an energy auditor. Improving the energy effi ciency of your home will help you reduce your electric bill.

Orange County REMC is offering FREE residential energy audits to our residential electric members. This comprehensive free energy audit, which includes a blower door test, would normally cost approximately $350, plus travel expenses.

The audit process takes approximately two hours to complete. During this time, the auditor will measure the home, doors and windows and gather information to input into energy audit software. The audit will also include a check of ceiling insulation, the condition of windows and water heater temperature.

An estimate of the energy effi ciency of existing heating and air conditioning systems will be made to compare the savings that could be achieved with the installation of a new air-conditioner, air-source or geothermal heat pump.

All of this information and more will go into an audit software to determine what steps you need to take in order to improve the energy effi ciency of the home. A report on the audit (with recommendations) will be mailed to you within two weeks of the auditor’s visit.

Blower Door TestAlso included in the audit is a blower door test. A blower door test is performed to fi nd air leaks in the home. While the test is being performed, you can actually feel any air leaks coming through window seals, door seals, outlets and other areas of the home. When the test is completed, the auditor will provide you a verbal report giving you an Estimated Natural Infi ltration Rate (ENIR). The ENIR will inform you how tight or loose your home actually is. This information will also be included in your written report.

InsulationIf your home is 10-15 years old, there’s a good chance it’s not insulated as well as it should be. Not having enough insulation results in major energy loss and, whether you realize it or not, your home is constantly leaking energy — especially out of the attic. A well-insulated home can signifi cantly reduce the cost of utility bills throughout the year.

The insulation performance of all insulation products is measured by a common standard referred to as the R-value. R-value measures resistance to heat fl ow and is usually determined by the thickness of the insulation. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

By adding additional insulation to your attic you can:

» Save up to 20% on your home’s heating and cooling energy costs

» Increase the comfort of your home, especially during the extreme heat of summer and bitter cold of winter

» Increase your home’s resale value

Preparing for an Energy AuditBefore the energy auditor visits your house, make a list of any existing problems such as condensation and uncomfortable or drafty rooms. Have copies or a summary of the home's yearly energy bills. Auditors use this information to establish what to look for during the audit.

» Is anyone home during working hours?

» What is the average thermostat setting for summer and winter?

» How many people live here?

» Is every room in use?

Your answers may help uncover some simple ways to reduce your household's energy consumption. Walk through your home with the auditors as they work, and ask questions.
