EditorialUniversities are increasingly relying on external partnerships for their staff member’s careeruplift, and academic and administrative activities. Collaborations with other universities, especially on international horizon, can be construed academically as a lucrative surplus bothfor the individual and for the university concerned.

In the fields of science and social science these collaborations are fairly common but the artsand humanities are only now starting to catch up. BUITEMS international collaborations andpartnerships enhance the quality of education that we provide to our students. Thesepartnerships offer our students meaningful and substantive international learning experiences, including exchange study programs, research, internships and experiential learning. Thesecollaborations are related to the drive in higher education towards increasing engagement withpublic audiences outside the institutions and assessing the wider impact of the learnt knowledgeundertaken.

BUITEMS professional development programs include workshops that are conducted atcampuses to help support various initiatives that promote effective teaching and research. These workshops are being conceptualized across our five faculties throughout the academiccalendar with varying degrees of success. Our own analytical experience with these activitiessuggests a number of barriers that these workshops are trying to overcome. In this sense, strengthening the outreach capacity of the University is likely to offer greater if not the optimalincentives for all stakeholders.

The raison d’être of universities is to advance the learning society. BUITEMS has alwaysencouraged developing and fostering an academic culture which must reflect the set of values, knowledge, skills and general attitudes that are the basis of civic engagement and pedagogyof inquiry and deliberation. Organizing conferences of international stature at BUITEMS is anacademic culture that includes all students and academicians. These conferences’ role thusincludes both teaching and research for the leaders and their representatives, higher educationprofessionals and students, policy-makers and higher education stakeholders from all sectors.BUITEMS conferences’ purpose is to enable our regional society members to respond moreeffectively to the challenges which they face and anticipate and strengthen their capability touphold fundamental values for the benefit of their students and society.
