LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Fas ng (the ea ng of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in between snacks) applies to those be-tween ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fas ng. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abs nence (the exclusion of meat for the en re day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s health. The days of full Abs nence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a me for us to voluntarily choose to do pen-ance and mor fica on as an expression of gra tude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT In today’s second reading we find one of the most beau ful and familiar passages in the Bible; a recita on of fi een characteris cs of Chris an love typically read at weddings and anniversary celebra ons. Of course, this was not what Saint Paul had in mind when he was chas-

sing the Chris an community at Corinth for its lack of love. He admonished the members of the community to exercise be er stewardship of Chris an love. The prac-

ce of pa ence, humility, joy, truth, peace, affirma on, and hope are ways good stewards put love into ac on. Might there be one or two of these a ributes we can work on in order to grow in our love for God and others?

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS Let us draw from the crib the joy and deep peace that Jesus comes to bring to the world.

es in our lives. What a perfect focus as we start a new year! Come to an interac ve presenta on on Thursday, Feb. 11 (7 p.m.) in the parish dining room [or a repeat of the same presenta on on Saturday, Feb. 27 (10 a.m.) also in the parish dining room]. WHEN DO WE SHOW MERCY?

There is never a ‘wrong’ me to show mercy to some-one. When we are presented with someone whose heart is breaking, who cannot forgive themselves for some-thing they have done, immediately is always the right

me. To use an opportunity to take someone out of suffering is a most noble act. Although there are many people who suffer material poverty, it is the poverty of the soul that breaks people the most. In li ing someone up in moments like this and showing them how loved they are by God, and how important and unique they are, we help heal and recreate new hearts. We par ci-pate in the crea ve work of the Father. This extraordinary Year of Mercy, we are invited to consider what that means for each one of us as a mem-ber of God’s family. We know that Jesus is the face of God’s mercy. It is he who allows us to see how merciful the Father is. This week, let us live together the Extraor-dinary Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. The year began on 8 December 2015, the Feast of the Immaculate Concep on, and will conclude on 20 Novem-ber 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. Come to the Old Mission Church and walk through our Holy Doors in this Jubilee Year. Invite your friends and family to step through what Pope Francis calls ‘A door that opens in the Church in order to reach out to those who, for many reasons, are far away.’

MISSION ROSE GARDEN WEEDING PARTY

All are invited to the rose garden in our Mission quadrangle for a weeding party around Mary’s statue; help us make her beau ful for this Lent! Join us from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on

DOCENTS NEEDED If you are a former elementary school teacher or a teacher of any kind, we could use your help. We have a need for another Sunday docent to conduct behind the scenes tours at 1pm with visi ng adults and possibly teens. We also have a need for more docents to help with our fourth grade presenta ons in the Historic Mis-sion Church on weekdays at 10am. Currently, we have a skeleton crew of docents. More would really help. Don’t be shy. Please contact Brother Chris, OFM, at 760-757-3651 x 170 or email me at [email protected]
