During his annual “State of the City” address at the Chamber’s Winter Quarterly Meeting, Mayor Ken Shetter provided an update of Burleson’s recent successes and announced an exciting proposed development for our city called Old Town Plaza.

Old Town Plaza could best be described as the "community's living room," Shetter said, and as a gathering place for special events. The plaza would be located between City Hall and the current Wood Shopping Center.

Residents will have input on the look and feel of the one-acre plaza, Shetter said. A private sector partner will be sought to redevelop the Wood Shopping Center into a multi-story building – perhaps the first five-story building in Old Town – incorporating historic architecture with ground-level retail, housing and office space, along with the city's commitment to fund 28,000 square feet for higher education activities. Satisfying a long-running request as Old Town has gained in popularity, Shetter announced some 300 parking spaces would be added to Old Town. The project in total will not increase taxes.

"Our population, which stands at 41,818, is growing, our economy is booming, crime is at historically low levels, our families have greater opportunities to thrive than ever before and we are well positioned to make the infrastructure investments we need to smartly manage our growth," Shetter said. "We have a unique opportunity to embark on a transforma-tional project that could define our community for generations to come."

Shetter also shared good news about the new Police Station and public safety in Burleson, our city’s ISO ranking, staffing at our three fire stations, the lowest retail vacancy in the Metroplex and an unemployment rate of 3.5% in our city. He also recounted the recent retail, office and residential developments in our city, including the groundbreaking of the signature Old Town Station on the northwest corner of I-35W and Renfro.

"We are well-situated to effectively manage the healthy growth we will continue to see, and to be a very good city into the foreseeable future," Shetter said. "But our job is not to be a very good city, but to be a great city."

Chamber president Sherri Sechrist also shared a “State of the Chamber” address with members, recounting the Chamber’s successes in 2015. Highlighting the list is the consistent membership, the addition of a new digital sign, and the Chamber website with landing pages for all of its 500+ members. She also discussed the success of the Chamber special events, which include the Honey Tour Bike Ride, Holiday Bazaar and Annual Golf Tournament, along with outstanding programs and turnout for the Chamber’s luncheons, Power of Heels meeting, Business After Hours and other events. She also noted the significant impact Chamber members have on the organization’s success through their many hours of volunteerism.

“My goal for 2016 is to have as much fun as we did in 2015,” Sechrist said. However, she did detail 2016 plans to add a “Work in Bur-leson” page to the website, stating members indicate finding and keeping employees is their number one challenge. The Chamber will also celebrate its 50th Anniversary this year, celebrating 50 years of excellence in the Burleson community.

Now in its 18th year and considered one of the most beautiful bicycle rides in North Texas, the Burleson Honey Tour Bike Ride is growing in popularity and respect in the bicycling community. The Burleson Honey Tour is not a race; therefore, you do not have to be an avid cyclist to participate. Take your pick and RIDE 67, 46, 30 or 7 Miles through the beautiful Burleson countryside. We’ll have seven rest stops and a great lunch for you at the end of the ride. We’re hoping nearly 1,800 riders will take part in the Honey Tour this year!

Not a cyclist? There are several opportunities available for you to participate in the fun and watch hundreds of riders by serving as a VOLUNTEER. Over 200 volunteers help make the Honey Tour possible. Over and over, riders comment on the friendliness of our volunteers and city. You can work a little or stay all day to enjoy the fun of watching 1,500 riders take and return from Centennial High School. We can make the schedule work for whatever time you have available. And, you’ll receive one of the “highly-coveted” Honey Tour Bike Rider Volunteer T-Shirts!

The Honey Tour Bike Ride attracts enthusiasts from all over the state of Texas. “Riders come from all points across North Texas,” Sechrist said. “But we also see riders from Waco, Austin, San Antonio, Abilene, Wills Point and so many other cities. We have riders from nearly every corner of our state, plus a few from out-of-state, too.” The Honey Tour is a great event to market your business if you are looking for a broader market. There are several opportunities to be a SPONSOR or set up an EXHIBIT TABLE at the finish line.
