Being a woman in the 21st century may be rewarding, but it’s seldom easy.

Despite decades of progress in professional, political, domestic and other walks of life, the ex-pectation to perform has never been higher. With pressure com-ing from every direction and so-cial media shining a relentless light into women’s worlds, it’s easy for women to feel like they aren’t measuring up.

It’s no surprise that, accord-ing to the American Psychologi-cal Association, half of all women report that their stress has in-creased over the past five years.

At the September Power of Heels Luncheon, attendees will

hear how to find f r e e d o m from the in terna l and ex-t e r n a l s o u r c e s of pres-sure that threaten to stran-gle them of vitality

and joy. Speaker Susan Cloud will share how women can re-discover who they are and more importantly, who they are made to be.

Susan is the co-owner of Go

In addition to owning her own business, she is a busy mother, a professional musician and wor-ship leader. Susan was raised and resides in Burleson, where she and her husband, Scot, are raising their three children.

This year, the Chamber rolled out a new program for young professionals who work in and around the City of Burleson. The Burleson Young Executives Alli-ance 2015 held its first meeting in March 2015, and the group continues to meet for monthly half-day sessions through Octo-ber, completing an eight-month program.

Class members serve in lead-ership capacities in their orga-nizations and are committed to personal growth, career advance-ment and serving the Burleson community.

The purpose of BYEA is to cre-ate an opportunity for each to

gain an expanded knowledge of the community, to build relation-ships with other young profes-sionals, to engage with political, civic and business leaders, and to create opportunities for a more active role of local leadership and volunteerism.

The Chamber offers one BYEA class annually with the class size limited to 12 members. Thus far, the reaction of 2015 class mem-bers has been favorable.

Chamber welcomes new teachers to town

BURLESON ISD NEW TEACHER LUNCHEON

The Burleson Area Chamber of Com-merce hosted the BISD New Teacher Luncheon on Tuesday, August 11th at Burleson High School. A crowd of cham-ber and community members welcomed nearly 150 new teachers and profession-als to our city and the school year, with 275 people in attendance at this annual Chamber event.

In his keynote presentation, Superin-tendent Bret Jimerson urged his newest employees to “be relevant,” recounting his personal journey as a less-than-en-thusiastic student until he entered law school. Today, Dr. Jimerson holds multi-ple degrees, is still an avid learner and is a visionary leader of the Burleson school district.

Burleson Mayor Ken Shetter talked about the Burleson Opportunity Fund, encouraging teachers to count on the community and the city as their partners

in education. “We want every student in Burleson to have the opportunity to at-tend college,” said Shetter. The Burleson Opportunity Fund was created to pro-vide funding for students without finan-cial means to attend college once they graduate from Burleson high schools.

Title Sponsor for the event was Texas Health Resources, representing Texas Health Huguley Hospital Fort Worth South and Texas Health Neighborhood Care & Wellness Burleson.

“It is such an honor for the Chamber to host this event each year,” said Sherri Sechrist, Chamber president. “To see the room filled with new teachers who have chosen Burleson as the place where they will impact the lives of our students and our community’s future – it’s just inspir-ing. Our school district continues to at-tract the brightest and the best educa-tors each year.”

Each month, the Burle-son Chamber partners with the Burleson Public Library for a Lunch & Learn series that educates Chamber and community business lead-ers with topics ranging from management to marketing skills to help them further their small business.

Lunch & Learns are FREE – just bring your own brown bag lunch.

In August, Lunch & Learn attendees heard what every successful business leader should do in “Six Daily Practices to Drive Performance and Generate More Business.” The presenter was Tim McRay, a professor of stra-tegic marketing at North-wood University and presi-dent/principle of Forte, Inc.

The Lunch & Learn ses-sion is titled “Digital Mar-keting 2.0.” Attendees will learn how experienced and successful marketers un-derstand the value of serv-ing up the best possible on-line experiences to today’s “digital shopper.”

It is imperative to opti-mize each digital touchpoint

– websites, mobile apps, email campaigns, PPC, SEO, social media and rep-utation management – to convert more clicks to more sales. The key to a business’ success is building a long-term strategy that puts their brand in front of the great-est number of local custom-ers online or on-the-go – and ahead of your competition.

September’s Lunch &

Learn will provide attend-ees with a full assessment of their digital footprint, their competition and their industry to help them de-velop a digital marketing playbook.

The next Lunch & Learn will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, in the com-munity room at the Burle-son Public Library, located at 248 SW Johnson Avenue.

This is a FREE hands on workshop, so bring a laptop or tablet along with your brown bag lunch and take the step-by-step, strategic approach for building on-line and mobile marketing programs that deliver real business value.

those that have presented to our group over the past few months,” said Jason Reynolds, 2015 class member and sales associate with Vi-sions Realty and Investments. “My experience with BYEA so far has shown me how valuable it is to know what is going on in our community, the importance of those that fill an essential role in each sector and how we can help Burleson continue to grow.”

This year’s programs included a full-day trip to Austin while the leg-islature was in session, coordinated by State Rep. DeWayne Burns’ of-fice. BYEA has also spent an after-noon with City of Burleson elected officials, including Mayor Ken Shet-ter. The Burleson economic develop-ment team shared the latest growth news with the class and conducted tours of Chicken E, Toyota of Bur-leson and Wagner Smith. Texas Health Huguley hosted the group in July for both tours of the hospi-tal and of the new construction, discussing the economic impact of health care in general and specifi-cally in Burleson.

Adam Russell is vice president of First National Bank of Burleson, the Chamber’s 2015 Chairman of

the Board and a 2015 class member.“As Burleson continues its tre-

mendous growth, it is important for our young leaders to develop strong networks with one another and learn about the industries within Burleson so that the values that make Burleson a great community today will continue forward into the future,” Russell said. “I enrolled in BYEA to get to know other leaders in the community who will continue to be my colleagues later on as we further our careers. As part of the first class, I hope that we can be a model for subsequent ones that one day will have a large, diversi-fied network of leaders as the years progress.”

Ellen Larimore, director of mar-keting and communications for the

Chamber, is also a member of the class.

“BYEA is a great opportunity for young professionals to develop business relationships with other up-and-coming leaders who are the future of the City of Burleson,” Lari-more said. “Participating in BYEA will help broaden my knowledge about the city’s infrastructure and leadership while strengthening my own leadership skills.”

The BYEA will meet three more times this year, with Burleson police and fire departments; with the Bur-leson ISD leadership, teachers and administration; and finally with Johnson County law and elected of-ficials.

Beginning Oct. 1, the Cham-ber will accept applications for the

BYEA Class of 2016. The application can be found online at the Cham-ber’s website and will be selected by a panel from the Chamber’s board of directors. The fee to participate is $500, and includes all lunches and outings for the year.

In addition to Russell, Larimore and Reynolds, additional 2015 class members are Elijah Bruette, Texas Health Huguley Hospital; Casey Davis, Burleson Fire Department; Kendall Frazier, Frost Bank; Aus-tin Justice, Justice IT Consulting; Steve Logan, Burleson ISD; Jeff Montgomery, Pinnacle Bank; Ryan Richardson, Star Bank of Texas; and Jared Treesh, Northstar Bank.

The Chamber’s An-nual Golf Tournament will take place Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Hidden Creek Golf Course.

“Planning for this event is well underway,” said Tournament Chairman Gregg Gammon of Gam-mon Financial, PLLC. “Last year’s event was a complete sell-out with 140 Chamber members enjoy-ing a great day of golf. To accommodate even more players, this year we will have both a morning and and afternoon flight. This is such a great event with a lot of prizes and contests. We think this year’s event will be a complete sell-out, too.”

This is Gammon’s fourth year to serve as Tourna-ment Chairman. Under his leadership, a large per-centage of last year’s spon-sors have already renewed for 2015.

“We just haven’t had the time to visit with ev-eryone yet,” laughed Gam-mon. “Eighty percent of our players will be sponsor-ship teams, but we will also have nine or 10 foursomes available, too.”

Sponsorships start at $1,000 with many market-ing and advertising bene-fits and include a foursome. Foursomes will cost $600. Title Sponsors for 2015 are Texas Health Resources and KWS Manufacturing.

Members from both the morning and afternoon flight will enjoy a fajita lunch catered by Fresco's Cocina Mexicana, and an end-of-tournament patio party will feature live mu-sic, food and the awarding of golf and raffle prizes. Participants will enjoy competing in four Hole-

Planning underway for annual tourney

In-One contests, a chipping contest, closest to the pin, longest drive and other ac-tivities.

“Our tournament offers a lot of extras, and every year this event continues to grow,” Gammon said. “It’s a great way for Chamber members to connect with

each other and have a great day of golf at the same time.”

Proceeds from the golf tournament support the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce. This event is selling out quickly. For more information on how to par-ticipate, contact the Cham-ber office.
