CHIEF EDITOR’S FOREWORD
AS WE START THE NEW YEAR, OUR MINDS ARE FILLED WITH EXCITEMENT OF NEW ASPIRATIONS AND TARGETS, SOME OF US HAVE A LONG TO DO LIST CRAFTED WITH CONFIDENCE AND ENTHUSIASM.
Whatever plans we have for 2017, let them be our hallmark to
personal and professional growth. To the BAC team, we made
tremendous achievements in 2016 and this new beginning gives
us an opportunity to take BAC to greater heights.
I wish the team and management a fruitful year ahead as we
embark on our journey. The year 2017 started off with a splendor,
having BAC honored with the PMR Africa Golden Arrow Award
on January 30th, 2017 at the Cresta Lodge. This was the second
time BAC won the Golden Arrow award which was first won in
2010. It is also a time to start off student recruitment campaigns in
anticipation of the Class of 2016 Botswana Government Certificate
of Secondary Education, A-levels and other certificate exam results.
The 2017 promotion commenced in Francistown alongside the
inaugural Botswana Human Resource Development Council
Career and Skills Fair which was embraced by the Francistown
community with great warmth.
At the end of the week BAC held its first Open Day in Francistown
at the Francistown College of Education premises which will be
BAC’s new home soon. The event was officially opened by the
newly elected Deputy Mayor Mr Godisang Radisigo as the key
note speaker. Some of the dignitaries included the member of
parliament for Francistown East Honourable Ignatius Moswaane,
Honourable Councilors, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry
of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology Dr
Theophilus Mooko, the BAC Board Chair Dr Shabani Nzdinge and
parents.
This momentous event was preceded by the special and official
visit by the Minister of Higher Education Science and Technology
from the Republic of South Sudan, Hon. Justice. Yien Oral Lam
Tut’s and his entourage. The BAC management welcomed the
South Sudan delegation at the main campus for a benchmarking
and identification of collaboration opportunities.
For the first time, we celebrated excelling students across the
different disciplines to motivate them to continue with their
dedication as well as to inspire other students to do better in
their studies. These awards were offered to the best student per
programme of study and academic year at the Gaborone Campus,
the Francistown Campus awards are yet to be held.
The cherry on top of this quarter has been the wining of the
Botswana Human Resource Development Career and Skills Fair
Overall Exhibitor and Best Public Institution Awards. For us it’s
a symbol of collaboration, teamwork, commitment and the
passion exuded by the BAC team as they confidently showcased
institution’s product offering. The design of the stall and
demonstrations were inspired by the fair theme, ‘Guidance for
Human Resource Development. A Gateway towards diversifying
Botswana’s Economy”.
The theme resonates with our mandate for human capital
development and promotion of entrepreneurship as an avenue to
diversify the economy through nurturing and facilitating initiatives
for business start-ups which lead to employment creation.
We have a lot more to share with you on staff movement, research
and a whole lot more.
I would like to welcome aboard the new editorial team and thank
them for their invaluable input. Till the next issue, enjoy the read.

Dubbed “The city of everything precious”, Francistown has become the hub for potential opportunities with also infrastructural developments hence the aspiration of BAC to take on such meaningful approaches. The Open Day was held with the objective to create awareness about BAC and its wide range of business and professional programmes which are relevant to the labour market in the current economy.
Upon his welcome remarks at the BAC Open day official
ceremony, Deputy Mayor of Francistown Mr Godisang
Radisigo expressed joy that history is being made on
BAC’s first ever Open Day in his City. He indicated that
the event will go a long way in ensuring that the entire
Francistown Community especially the informal sector,
become fully aware of available opportunities offered
through various institutions within the city that have
the potential to help them grow further and become
more economically sustainable; as individuals and
businesses.
On his part, The Permanent Secretary to the Minister of Tertiary Education Research Science and Technology, Dr Mooko highlighted
that the institution’s management seeks to grow relations with all stakeholders in the city as they believe that successful education of
the youth can be truly achieved through collective efforts of the Government, parents, BAC and the business community within the City
and surrounding areas. “Mo Setswaneng re itse ha kgetsi ya tsie e kgonwa ke go tshwaraganelwa. It is through this fundamental cultural
background that we all come together to contribute towards the development of our youth to shape future leaders and self-sustainable
generation to grow and diversify our economy.” Dr Mooko cited.
The BAC Executive Director Ms Serty Leburu expressed excitement to the new opportunity to move to a bigger campus and join
BOCODOL at the Francistown College of Education premises. She asserted that it is indeed a great move in growing the number of
students in Francistown Campus. “BAC is a business school set up to contribute towards the human capital development in Botswana
and beyond. With over two decades in operation, we strive to produce market ready graduates who have the necessary skills and
expertise to contribute to employment creation, by setting up their own enterprises through their innovative ideas to create jobs for
others, or by imparting their skills and competencies back to the economic industry.” said Ms Serty Leburu

BOTSWANA ACCOUNTANCY COLLEGE PARTICIPATED AT THE 2017 BOTSWANA HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT SKILLS FAIR AND CAREER CLINICS.
The college has over two decades of creating business leaders. As an institution of higher learning, we facilitate career guidance through career fairs during visits to various secondary schools, dikgotla and mass media channels. The BHRDS is one of the platforms we use to raise awareness about BAC and our programmes, to facilitate career advice and administer applications. We are proud to have obtained the 2017 Best Overall Exhibitor and 1st Prize Local Public Institution awards. To us this is a badge of honour, and a demonstration of dedication and excellent team effort from all stakeholders. It is also motivation for the team to continue delivering quality tertiary education and grooming aspiring leaders who will add value to the economic diversification and growth of our Country.
The BAC stall at the BHRDS was designed to showcase both the
theory and practical work through demonstrations of products
to highlight career opportunities for the various programmes
we offer across the various schools. The team consisted of BAC
staff members, current students and Alumni to encourage and
inspire their peers about their learning experience at BAC. There
were exhibitions of alumni commercial innovations to cultivate
an appreciation of entrepreneurship in prospective learners such
that they understand that they can form businesses from studying
various programmes and designing their own concepts.
The youth of this country are our future leaders, therefore they
need to be encouraged to participate in employment creation
through establishing their own companies using the knowledge
attained from school, experience from industry attachment
and understanding of business needs. Hence we design our
programmes in line with national skills requirements and as
well as introduce entrepreneurship into various programmes to
provide students with the expertise to be globally competent
market ready graduates and successful entrepreneurs.

There has been a number of elements affecting the education sector such as the national budget cuts, decline in pass rates at secondary level and the rise of private tertiary institutions, therefore competition in the tertiary education space.
THE FIERCE COMPETITION IN STUDENT ATTRACTION AND RETENTION HAS MADE IT NECESSARY FOR BOTSWANA ACCOUNTANCY COLLEGE (BAC) TO ALSO REINVENT ITS STUDENT ATTRACTION AND RETENTION STRATEGIES TO KEEP UP WITH THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENTAL FORCES.
The Marketing and Corporate Communications department in
partnership with the Registrar’s office, worked on an integrated
marketing plan that involved the use of various media in reaching
the public for the 2016 Q4 undergraduate recruitment. This
plan saw the team making use of radio, television, print media,
digital and online media. All these were done with great synergy
for the message to be consistent and believable. The theme of
the campaign was to showcase our alumni currently working in
different industries to show the continuity of our programmes.
Additionally, the theme was to answer the much asked question
“How employable will I be after completing the programme?”
The campaign was not only to create awareness, but also to give
prospects and general public assurance of the quality business
education and market ready graduates from BAC.
In order to increase our geographical reach, the team embarked
on a nationwide roadshow where we visited almost every senior
secondary school and main kgotla in Botswana. This was done
to ensure that every eligible candidate is given an opportunity
to apply for entry into BAC. The roadshow also gave one of
the most forgotten segments-the Orphaned and Vulnerable
Children an opportunity to apply to BAC without incurring travel
expenses. As the college we are committed to delivering quality
business education and are most interested in recruiting people
from various backgrounds as this adds diversity to our student
population.

BAC NEWSLETTER ISSUE 03 JANUARY - MARCH 2017 I 13
THE RECEPTION WAS VERY GOOD IN MOST SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS SUCH AS MADIBA, SWANENG, SELIBE-PHIKWE AND FRANCISTOWN.
Prospective students, teachers and the general public expressed delight in the attempts that the college was making to close
the geographical gap. This was also an opportunity for the college to develop strong and fruitful relations with guidance
and counselling teachers, head teachers as well as regional education officers who are all opinion leaders for the form fives.
Also, the teams had the opportunity to drop off materials such as the prospectus, diaries, wall calendars and merchandise
to create likability for the brand.
This was a successful exercise that will form part of recruitment drive on a yearly basis as the reception was overwhelming.
Live radio interviews at the different locations as well as placing the schedule on local newspapers, the website and different
social media platforms drove the success of this initiative. We would like to encourage all staff members to continue
collaborating in all efforts to drive student enrolment and retention. Only through collaboration can we reach excellence,
one of the college values and continue developing market ready business leaders.

BAC received a Diamond Arrow Award rated 4.10 out of 5.00, at the 2016 PMR Africa awards on the 30th January 2017, in Gaborone. BAC received the same award in 2010. Speaking at the event, BAC Executive Director, Ms Serty Leburu said that starting off the year by awarding staff members and institutions as PMR Africa was doing would provide employees and management with renewed energy and focus for months ahead.
According to her, excellence has been embedded in our being and our culture. “This is attested
by how we cultivated and ploughed our fields, stored our harvest, built our huts, took care of
our birds and animals like cattle and goats, to the extent that we branded them for identity
and governance,” she said.
She further encouraged that future generations should continue to be groomed to carry on
the legacy to ensure that even more generations are impacted in future. “It is platforms like
this that should remind us that as businesses and Institutions, we can collectively and hugely
contribute to the growth of the country’s economy,” she remarked.

DOMESTIC TOURISM CHALLENGES IN BOTSWANA: A STAKEHOLDERS’ PERSPECTIVE
AUTHORS
Phemelo Morupisi and Lelokwane Mokgalo
ABSTRACT
The study aimed at identifying and explaining current challenges faced in the development of domestic tourism in Botswana. A review
of recent travel patterns by Batswana shows an increasing outbound movement for leisure purposes. This in itself shows a propensity
to travel which is an antecedent to tourism engagement. However, the good outbound leisure travel numbers have not translated to
domestic tourism consumption. The research used a focus study approach with purposively selected tourism stakeholders to explore
the challenges encountered in the development of domestic tourism. A constant comparative method of data analysis was used to
analyse the data collected. The findings indicated that domestic tourism in Botswana is lacking behind because Botswana has a mono
product tourism offering which is wildlife based and highly priced leaving Batswana with one option of travel which is outbound. The
second finding is that the culture of Batswana generally does not involve travelling for leisure activities because they always have to
be in their farms and cattle posts. Thirdly the policy which advocates for a high value-low volume approach has resulted in high prices
for tourism services in Botswana especially accommodation. In conclusion the study observes that outbound travel by Batswana is
a response to lack of choice locally and recommends diversification to the product offering in Botswana to take advantage of this
market. Education, awareness campaigns and concessionary rates for residents during off-season are also recommended to sensitise the
residents about product offerings within the country and address the affordability issue.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Phemelo Morupisi
Presently an Assistant food & beverage manager in one of the hospitality establishments in Botswana. He is a graduate of the Botswana
Accountancy College Tourism Programme offered in partnership with the University of Derby, UK. The author also has interest in
domestic tourism development.
Lelokwane Mokgalo
Lecturer in Tourism Studies at the Botswana Accountancy College. The paper encapsulate the author’s interest in domestic tourism
development as a measure to cushion seasonality and external shocks in the local industry. Other interests are in sustainable and
responsible tourism practices across the different sectors within the industry.
PUBLIC INTEREST STATEMENT
Recent statistics have shown that a growing number of Botswana citizens and residents visit places outside the country for tourism
purposes while in comparison only a sixth of that number visit local attractions. From the perspective of private and public stakeholders
in the industry, the paper looks at the challenges of low domestic participation. It was found that the predominant single wildlife product,
high prices of services in the tourism industry, lack of planning for leisure travel and a culture of low leisure travel are the most factors
challenging the growth of domestic tourism in Botswana. Therefore to address these, diversification into different products, education,
awareness campaigns and concessionary rates for residents during off-peak are some of the strategies that could help improve domestic
travel within the country and help local authorities and businesses tap into this extensive market.

BAC NEWSLETTER ISSUE 03 JANUARY - MARCH 2017 I 21
This semester we saw students taking an active role and participating in the student representative council (SRC) elections more than the school has ever experienced this past couple of years. We had over 25 candidates running for the 11 portfolios available. There were 2 main parties running along with independent candidates who each wanted an opportunity to lead their student companions. The 2 major parties were the Revolutionary Student Leaders (RSL) and Progressive student front (PSF) which saw the RSL winning 9 portfolios and PSF 2 portfolios. The SRC now consists of 3 females which in itself is an improvement from last year.
These elections saw over 500 students voting for the elections
which in retrospect, based on past elections, is a significant
increase. These elections and campaigns engaged the whole
student body where students were interacting and engaging with
their candidates even on the social media platforms. Students
showed genuine interest on who their next leaders were which
was seen in the students massive attendance at the 2 debates
held at Main campus and FFC. The debates offered the Candidates
an opportunity to sell themselves and present their manifestos,
while the students also had the chance to ask questions and
articulate the major concerns to the candidates.
The election process went well with independent external
observers overseeing the whole election process. The elections
were declared free and fair with all the candidates accepting the
results without any queries. The inauguration of the SRC was also
held which saw a smooth transition of power from the previous
SRC led by Tumo Liwambano to the current SRC led by Goitseone
Maikano. The SRC are to be in term for a year until end of February
2018.
In Francistown elections were conducted on the 28th of March
2017 in both campuses, Barclays Plaza and Gerald, from and
counting was arranged for Gerald campus immediately after
closure of polling stations. The counting exercise was led by a
representative from national IEC office together with observers
from IHS, Botho and FCTVE. The elections followed after four
campaigns which are two in each campus and the rest of the
student body was involved. A total of 222 students took part in the
elections which marked a decline from last year’s elections and
from the 11 portfolios 4 were unopposed and it tallies the number
of ladies in the cabinet.
