What I received from Discovering Christ and the ChristLife series

by Kathy Carter

These past few years have been tough for me. I was diagnosed with adult ADHD, my marriage and my family were falling apart, my finances were just out of control. I was stressed at work, and life just seemed pretty gloomy. I was stuck in depression, which lead to weight gain, unhealthy relation-ships, and hopelessness. As you can imagine, I was constantly in a state of fear. The fears that haunted me affected the important roles I play in life. The fear I faced as a wife was how can my husband truly love me for me with all the mess I’ve made in our marriage. As a mother, I feared not leaving good human beings in our world. The fear I faced as a daughter was about how I carry myself and not bringing shame to my parents and for them to be proud to call me their daughter. I am the third oldest of eight girls, so the fear of being unreliable in meeting their needs would haunt me. And last, as a friend, the fear of not being honest at appropriate times and not being honorable. As you can imagine this is what kept me in depression because of the constant fear of being judged by others and not being good enough. This was my reason for committing to our ChristLife Series offered here at our parish. I’ve seen so many people in so many different aspects, who had a relationship with Christ, and I knew they weren’t stuck in depression. What they had, I wanted. When this opportunity came up for Discovering Christ, I prayed about it and I asked God to help me to commit to this. I volunteered to assist in facilitating the Discovering Christ series, where I learned that I wasn’t alone with the feelings that I struggled with. I learned who Jesus truly is and the role he plays in my life, which now I can confidently say that I’m not alone. So, with this series, I learned about Christ. As a participant in the Following Christ series, I learned the disciplines of being a disciple of Christ, which brought on the fear of not being worthy because of the things I’ve done in my past. But, then I learned how to pray, the power of our Sacraments offered in our Catholic faith, and forgiveness of myself and others who have hurt me, which led me to personally commit to following Christ. As a participant in the Sharing Christ series, I learned how to share what Jesus Christ meant to me and the personal relationship I now have with him in my spiritual journey. The fear I faced was faith in action and actually speaking with people and sharing my personal sins with others and the fear of judgment. However, learning about the Kerygma and sharing His Good News, helped me to overcome those fears knowing there is hope in Christ. As an “Old Testament” Catholic, I felt that God was distant and restrictive; however, this ChristLife series has helped me grow into a “New Testament” Catholic, believing that God is within me, granting me the freedom of putting my faith in action for Christ. Therefore, I now view life as a gift, a pure gift only offered by our Lord. This series has helped me out of depression because it offered hope and a way to better handle life’s challenges. My relationships with my husband, children, parents, siblings, and friends have healed because of my personal relationship with Christ. Earlier I mentioned my finan-cial stress, which I now have better control over, and my weight gain, which I have already gone down three pant sizes and am hopeful to reach my goal size in the coming year. I no longer struggle with the fears mentioned in the beginning, because I now put my trust in Christ our Lord. I also know now that with any fear I face, I can handle it better because I have a relationship with Christ. So, thank you for offering the ChristLife series.

For parents registering their children for the 2017-2018 school year, please note: In order to receive the school’s reduced Catholic Tuition Rate, your pastor must determine whether your family meets the criteria set by your parish for Registered, Active, Participating members. The definition of registered, active, and participating varies by parish, but usually includes attending Mass regularly along with contributing with an envelope to the offertory and supporting the ministry life of the parish. If you have questions about your family’s status, please contact your parish office directly. (Note: All Diocesan high school students receiving the reduced tuition rate for the coming year must have their status verified by their home pastor before they can be registered as Catholic.)

COUNCIL PLANNING MEETING Council 10062 will conduct its monthly planning meeting at 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 19th in room 5. All Brother Knights are encouraged to attend for the discussion of the “nuts and bolts” of upcoming activities including budgeted and expense items. These meetings help streamline the regular business meeting held on each first Thursday.

FOURTH DEGREE MEETS JAN 26TH San Xavier del Bac Assembly will hold its first meeting of the New Year at 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 26 in rooms 5 & 6. All Sir Knights are urged to attend and participate in the discussions and decisions of your Patriotic Degree.

FIRST DEGREE HONORS ON JAN 28TH

Catholic men, 18 years and up, are asked to consider active membership in the Knights of Columbus, the world’s largest fraternity of Catholic men. The Honors of the First Degree will be invested on new members at 9:00 am Saturday, January 28th.

The January installation will permit you to receive the Honors of the Second and Third Degrees at the February 18th ceremonies here in the Corpus Christi Parish Center. Additionally, because we are the host Council for this event, your fees, including lunch will be free.

This is an outstanding opportunity to become a Third Degree Knight before March. Consider it, pray over it, discuss it with your family, talk to a Knight about it. Use this occasion to become the Knight you always wanted to be!

SPECIAL EVENT DRIVERS NEEDED Event Chairman Paul Kalpak has released tentative dates for moving cars leading up to the Phoenix Open: January 19, 20, 21, 26 and 27. After the Open, drivers will be needed February 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 depending on some yet to be determined factors.

Regardless, volunteers who are at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license are eligible to drive these new vehicles to relocate them as circumstances dictate. VOLUNTEERS DO NOT HAVE TO BE KNIGHTS and do not have to help every date. Please plan to gather at 8:00 am in room 5 for orientation and instructions as your schedule permits.

Please contact Paul for more information at 262-994-3991.

What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? How do I register? All Catholics living within the Parish and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs.

Adult children, 18+, need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get mar r ied, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors.

Also, in order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program.

You can register by coming to the Parish Office and filling out a short registration form. The registration form can also be downloaded from our parish website.

How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. Preparation classes are also required for parents prior to the child’s Baptism and are offered once a month.

How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive.

How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
