CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 7, 26th May 2016
Camperdown
amperdown College staff were delighted to celebrate Education Week with students, families and special visitors at last Wednesday’s Open Night.
Students are always proud to share their classrooms and learning with family members and we are very appreciative of the support shown by our school community. Our Prep classroom was also opened up to prospective families on Wednesday morning to give kindergarten parents an insight into the early years’ school experience. Congratulations to all students who participated in Education Week activities with such enthusiasm and pride.
Cherie Kilpatrick, Principal
Clockwise from top: Mercy Rothman; Honor and Oliver Rahles-Rahbula; Kyle Bernaldo, Krooze
McEwan-Hill, Makye Gleeson and Phoenix Blanchette; Lawson and Jocelyn Clark; Amelia Gili with
her Mum Holly-Jane; Paula, Lewis and Zack Regan.
Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
Thank you for your attendance at our
Education Week Open Night last
Wednesday. Following on from the
Compass launch, families have now been
mailed out an information package and
consent form in order for the school to
take the next step of creating parent
accounts. Included in the package is an
optional survey on student reporting at Camperdown
College as we would appreciate a parent perspective on
what kind of feedback is most useful and valued.
Please try to return your Compass parent consent forms by
tomorrow to enable us to provide you with your parent
account and access details next week. Your feedback as we
implement Compass across the school and you learn to use
the various functions will be valuable. If you notice any
discrepancies in your child’s attendance information on
Compass, please contact the relevant campus office to ask
questions or advise of any changes that may be required.
I am very pleased to announce the recent appointment of
Mrs Lisa Guegan-Brown to the Food Technology teaching
position at Camperdown College. Previously a chef, Mrs
Guegan-Brown brings both industry and teaching
experience to the position and we are looking forward to
her joining the staff team next semester.
Last Thursday I attended the first meeting of the new
Moyne principals’ network in Mortlake. Changed
Departmental network boundaries bring the Warrnambool
and Corangamite principals together, replacing the previous
Warrnambool and Colac Corangamite networks. Next
Thursday and Friday I will be at the Bastow Institute in
Melbourne attending facilitator training for the Inspire
Local Leaders program, which is designed to help increase
the number of quality leaders for school leadership roles. I
have been invited to assist with the delivery of this program
in south west Victoria and it is pleasing to see that aspirant
leaders in our local area will have access to this
professional learning program. Attracting and retaining
applicants for school leadership positions remains a
challenge in rural Victoria.
Visitors to the Senior Campus may have noticed new
signage pointing to the Grimwade Library. Ian Currell has
completed a decorative sign on the corridor wall and will
shortly complete signage on the glass panelling above the
door itself. A permanent photographic and informative
board will be mounted inside the library door to ensure
that the history of the Grimwade Memorial Library is
conveyed to students.
At the Junior Campus there is great excitement amongst
the student body as plans for the installation of new
playground equipment are beginning to take shape. Parents
& Friends are on track to meet their fundraising target of
$30,000 and we are optimistic that with your support, we
will see the first pieces of new equipment installed next
term. Similarly, our students have embraced the 5c
Challenge and are very close to reaching the initial
fundraising target of $1,000. So the answer to the question,
Can we build a cubby out of 5c pieces? seems to be a very
definite, Yes we can! The students appear to be highly
motivated to keep on fundraising through the 5c Challenge
to build an even bigger and better cubby. Thank you to
College families for your enthusiastic support of these
projects.
Once all targets are met, there will be many ways in which
you can assist with the redevelopment of the Junior
Campus yard.
We will be looking for volunteers to
assist with the preparation of the
site, building of the cubby,
repainting of the totum poles,
creation of sensory and imaginative
play spaces…and lots more!

Students studying a Year 12 subject must sit the GAT (General Achievement Test) which will be held in the AG Daws Hall on
Tuesday 7th
June from 10.10am – 1.15pm. Students are to assemble at the hall by 9.45am. Students will have a late lunch after the
GAT and attend periods 5/6 as normal. An information session on how to approach the GAT will be held after school next Tuesday.
Try a Career Day:
Year 9 students will venture to TAFE in Warrnambool as part of their Try a Career Day tomorrow. This is a great opportunity to
explore different career pathways that are available. They will have the opportunity to participate in hands on activities, speak to
presenters and ask questions about what they might need to do to enter a career that interests them.
Year 9 Rail Trail Camp: Our Year 9 students enjoyed their two days exploring the Camperdown Timboon Rail Trail. The students rode to Glenfyne and
camped the night in tents at the old railway siding. They mastered the art of cooking their evening meal on trangias and had fun
playing spotlight tiggy and dodging the wrath of leeches. On the second day, the students walked to Timboon. Thank you to Mr
Gration for organising and attending the camp along with Miss Hurrell.
VSSS District Rehearsal:
The second district VSSS rehearsal was conducted in the AG Daws Hall last week. Our group which includes students from Year 7 –
10 are mastering all of the moves and dancing beautifully. Their commitment to lunch time rehearsals is fantastic and displaying
dividends.
VCAL Community Meal:
VCAL students prepared the community meal at the Uniting Church last week. Homemade pumpkin soup, sausage rolls, scallop
potatoes, fried rice, hedgehog and lemon slice was warmly received by all the participants. Thank you to staff for donating the
ingredients for the students to use to make the lunch.
BRICKs:
Building Resilience in Corangamite Kids is a program run by the Corangamite Shire that provides an opportunity for young people to
develop their own skills and self-awareness around anxieties, mental/physical health and overall wellbeing. It assists in building on an
individual’s capacity to bounce back from a situation and knowledge of how to better manage their own

pressures/choices/expectations. Year 9 students spent the day on Tuesday working through this program under the leadership of
Angela Gowans and Angela Brown.
Sticks and Stones:
The Sticks and Stones performance organised by Claire Blackstock was enjoyed by students in Year 7 – 10 last week. The students
gained further understanding of the impact of bullying, regulating behaviour and responding to bullying.
Year 6 to 7 Transition:
On Tuesday 7th
June our Year 5/6 students will commence their transition program. Over a number of weeks the students,
accompanied by their teachers, will visit the Senior Campus. These visits to the Senior Campus give these students a valuable
opportunity to spend time with secondary teaching staff and become familiar with the rooms and facilities. A letter confirming session
times and dates has been sent home to families today.
Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal
Open Night:
What a fabulous night we had last Wednesday evening as we opened our College doors to celebrate Education Week.
This year’s theme of Technology. Create your Future provided the opportunity for students to showcase some of the
ways they learn with technology tools to their parents and families.
It was fabulous to see so many of our families wandering around the school participating in the classroom activities
ranging from making iPad’s, to creating a narrative text using the program Storybird. To conclude the evening, our
Junior Campus School Captains presented a slideshow of our technology program at Camperdown College. Thank
you to all those families who attended our evening. We are very proud of all the programs we offer at our College and we are
fortunate to have such a dedicated staff to lead our students.
Year 3 – 6 District Cross Country:
Congratulations to our Cross Country team who competed at the District Cross Country Carnival in Noorat last Friday. They
competed against other students from Simpson, Timboon, Terang, Noorat, Camperdown and Mortlake. All students competed with
enthusiasm and it was pleasing to hear the encouragement they offered each other as individuals ran around the course. Well done to
Eve Britton, Declan Tickner, Dylan Robertson and Ruby Kempton who have progressed through to divisional level in Warrnambool
at Victoria Park tomorrow. We wish them the best of luck!
Simultaneous Storytime:
Yesterday, all students in Prep – Year 6 participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. Every year, a
picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in
libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places
around the country. All students thoroughly enjoyed listening to the 2016 story I Got This Hat. By
facilitating National Simultaneous Storytime, we aim to:
promote the value of reading and literacy;
promote the value and fun of books;
promote an Australian writer and publisher.
Thank you to Barb Purcell for coordinating this event.
Long Service Leave:
Julie Nelson and Judy Downie are currently on long service leave until Tuesday 14th
June. We are very fortunate to have extremely
capable relief teachers to step in and fulfil their teaching roles. We welcome Mrs Jan Green in Year 1/2N and Mrs Cilla Condie in
Year 3/4D.
Lunch Boxes:
We have a policy of no rubbish in the yard which means that students must put all disposable wrapping and containers into a bin
before they are allowed to play. This helps to keep our grounds tidy as well as protecting the environment. Parents can help by
providing foods for school that are not packaged in disposable wrappers.
Prep Writing:
Our Prep students have been practising writing instructional texts as part of their writing program. Enjoy reading How to Catch a Star.
How to Catch a Star How to Catch a Star First wait until it is out. First go out at night. Next hop on the trampoline. Next we load the canon with nets. Then jump really high. Then we fire the canon towards the star. Then just hook your fishing rod up to the star. Finally the star is ours. Hook the star. Wind it in. Give it a cuddle.
Communication:
There may be occasions when your child arrives home and tells you of something which may have occurred during the day at school
or whilst travelling to and from school. Any concerns you or your child may have regarding events at school are certainly ours also,
but we need to follow correct protocols in addressing them. Your first port of call must always be to contact the Office if you wish to
speak with your child’s class teacher. Teachers’ priority at school is teaching and learning and therefore it is not possible for them to
speak with you about any issues or concerns whist they are teaching. Our teachers are the people in the best position to speak to you

about any issues as they usually have an understanding of incidents which may or may not have taken place. They also provide a
balanced view as there are always two sides to every story.
Teachers have management and learning plans in place to ensure best outcomes for the children. They are trained professionals who
work hard to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all the children in their care. They are also tertiary trained experts in the delivery of
the curriculum and it is incumbent on them to communicate with you regarding the development of your child. I am always available
to speak with you; please contact me through the Office, as shared communication results in better outcomes for all.

Simultaneous Storytime was held yesterday at the Junior
Campus. This year’s story was I Got This Hat, written
by Jol and Kate Temple. The idea of Simultaneous
Storytime is that participating Australian schools read
the same book at the same time on the same day.
Camperdown College students assembled in the BER
building at 9.15am to listen to this story. Students were
encouraged to bring their favourite hat to school to wear
whilst listening to the story; an array of colourful hats
filled the crowd before me as I read the story.

On Tuesday 17
th May, Year 10 students (and some parents), were involved in a Keys Please session. This session was run by Peter
Gstrein from Vic Roads and was an invaluable learning experience for our students as they embark on their journey of becoming fully
licensed drivers. The session included a variety of engaging activities and relevant information that highlighted the different driving
skills and experiences that a learner needs to master, in order to become a responsible and safe licensed driver ready to navigate our
roads. A big thank you must go to Peter Gstrein for running such an informative session and to Vic Roads for running this
enlightening program. We hope that the students and parents enjoyed the session and walked out fully equipped to tackle those
sometimes testing learner driver experiences.

Last Friday 20th
May was the HSSSD Cross Country which was held at the Frederick Street
Sporting Complex. Approximately thirty-five students represented Camperdown College in the
event and although conditions were wet and the track was muddy, all participants gave it their
best go which was very pleasing to see.
Special mention must go to Jack Helmore (pictured right) who won his age group and Devon Coates and Olivia
Henzen who placed third in their respective age groups. We have a number of students who have made it through
to the Greater Wester Region Cross Country which will be held on Monday 6th
June at Victoria Park Reserve.
Thank you to the parents who came to support our students on the day and to the Miss McLennan and Miss Hurrell
for giving up their time to help staff the event.

Ever tried coding? With the technologies that we
have today, even people who are still in school can
earn a living from doing so.
Coding is a little like putting LEGO blocks together.

Families and friends are warmly invited to our Winter Concert on Wednesday 8th
June at 7pm in the BER building
at the Junior Campus. Our Instrumental Music students will be performing solos and group items and Mr Sharp’s
guitar students will be joining us for the first time.
Junior School Band:
The Junior School Band rehearses every Friday at lunchtime in the Library. The Band is made up of violin, recorder
and keyboard students and accompanied by students on the xylophone and metellaphone. This semester, they have
performed at assembly and will be performing at our Winter Concert.
Senior Ensemble:
Last Saturday, our Senior Ensemble Fiddle Fingers played their celtic tunes at the Robert
Burns Scottish Festival outside the Council Offices, adding to the Festival atmosphere.
This term they have also performed at various community concerts such as Music in
Mortlake, 15 Minutes of Fame at St Bridgit’s in Crossley, the Terang Nexus Concert and
the Noorat Presbyterian Celtic Concert as Fiddle Fingers, and with Corangamite Strings,
a string orchestra for senior string students from district schools.
Not only has their playing improved, but
most importantly, they have shared their
love of music with others. A big
congratulations to Jordan Watson, Tim

On Tuesday 17th
and Wednesday 18th
May, ten Year 9/10 students (all completing Duke of Edinburgh certificates and pictured
below) tackled the Camperdown Timboon Rail Trail as their practice journey. On the first day, students rode their bikes to
Glenfyne before camping in tents at the old Glenfyne station siding. Students revelled in the opportunity to learn about the history
of the line and all of the work that has been put in to convert it to a rail trail. In the morning, staff and students concluded the camp
by walking into Timboon.
The camp was a huge success with students
clearly showing that they had acquired the
skills required to pitch a tent, ride a bike,
plan a menu, shop for the ingredients, cook
on a methylated spirits stove, and most
importantly have fun whilst learning and
working together in the great outdoors.

Monday 16th
May saw our Senior Campus Students treated to the live play Sticks & Stones by renowned educational touring company
Brainstorm Productions. Two energetic young performers shone a spotlight on negative patterns of behaviour through inappropriate
modelling from peers, family members, television and computer games. It examined the link between hormones, adrenalin, the fight,
flight response and alcohol fuelled violence. The play was punctuated with circus skills to demonstrate co-operation and the use of
control through breath, focus and channelling energy into positive pursuits.
The hard hitting narrative explored the different forms of bullying in the playground, in the street and at home. School yard scenarios
were used to encourage students to have empathy and understanding around invading people’s personal space, homophobic and racist
remarks, domestic violence and intimidation in person or on the internet and explored how these actions are all illegal and have serious
consequences.
The play provided students with strategies around conflict resolution, friendships, co-operation, resilience, exclusion, sexual
harassment, bullying, cyber bullying and ethical cyber practices, anger management, assertiveness, domestic violence and breaking the
cycle of violence.
Feedback from students has been very positive and we are confident that all students have taken away important messages from the
play. Further information and support can be found at:

On Thursday 16th
June, we will be hosting the mobile World
of Work on Wheels (WOWOW) bus and Virtual Career Expo
Experience. This is an initiative of the Career Education
Association of Victoria and the Department of Education and
Training. All Senior Campus students will have access to the
bus during this day.
On the WOWOW bus, students will undertake a structured
lesson on career planning; view an online virtual career expo
entitled Next Steps and participate in a Samsung Gear
Glasses 3D Experience, which will involve students viewing
a specifically designed virtual reality app using Samsung
Gear VR Oculus 3D Glasses. Through the app, students will
explore careers in six growth industry areas.
It is important to note that if your child suffers from
certain medical conditions or symptoms, their use of the
3D glasses may expose them to risks of seizures,
blackouts, dizziness or other discomfort such as
disorientation, head aches or symptoms similar to motion
sickness. If you have concerns about your child’s use of
the 3D glasses please contact us prior to this activity.
Students will also be required to complete two short surveys.
The first will be completed prior to the WOWOW bus visit
as part of a classroom activity and will ask students about
their future career plans and the types of information they
need to make career decisions. The second survey will be
conducted after the WOWOW bus visit. If you have any
concerns about your child participating in these surveys,
please let me know.
During the WOWOW bus visit, students may be
photographed and these images may be used by the DET or
CEAV. We feel very lucky to have been chosen to participate
in this experience and are looking forward to it rolling in to
Camperdown College.
If you have any concerns about any part of this program
please let me know as soon as possible.
