House of Raeford Seeing Benefits of Switch to Cantrell Wing Segmenter

“We were originally interested

ability to allow us to no longer

use hand saws. We were

drawn to the machine as a safer

option, allowing us to eliminate

labor intensive jobs. And since

installing the machine, we feel

Cowan Johnson House of Raeford Plant Manager

Cowan Johnson, the plant manager

of the House of Raeford plant in

Wallace, NC was looking for a safer

and more efficient way to cut wings.

The plant had been using handsaws

in its wing segmenting process,

which is labor intensive and a cause for safety concern.

Cantrell’s U.S. Northeast Regional Accounts Manager Steve Morrison visited

Cowan at the North Carolina plant

and talked with him about Cantrell’s

Wing Segmenter. We’ve had great

results at other sites and were able

to share that information with Cowan.

“We were originally interested in

the wing segmenter for its ability to

allow us to no longer use hand saws,”

Cowan said. “We were drawn to the

machine as a safer option, allowing us

to eliminate labor intensive jobs. And

since installing the machine, we feel

the quality of our wing cuts has

been upgraded.”

The House of Raeford Wallace division,

which has been in operation since

2006, employs 600 people. It is the

newest slaughter plant that House

of Raeford operates and it processes

650,000 chickens per week.

Cantrell installed the CWCS-8400

Wing Segmenter in the operation in

September. Cowan said the installation

was very well organized

and completed quickly, limiting

downtime for production.

The Cantrell Wing Segmenter provides perfect cuts.

A custom chute was designed to deliver the wings that were cut.

Cantrell’s Wing Segmenter is designed to make all wing

cuts in one place and do it more accurately, at high line

speeds, on birds of various sizes and with less labor.

It is capable of processing up to 170 wings per minute per

processing line and can run with a cone line or in an off-line

application. The Wing Segmenter properly orients the wing

at any line speed for accuracy on each individual cut. The

House of Raeford, continued from p. 1shackle transfer eliminates misfeeds.

In just this short time, the House of Raeford plant has

seen improvements after years of using handsaws.

“The Cantrell segmenter has improved the quality of

our wings and also allowed us to cut labor cost,” Cowan

said. “We are now cutting wings in a much safer manner

-- and we have a better quality wing. The cuts from

the segmenter are extremely accurate. We have been

pleased with the results.”

The House of Raeford Wallace plant is now cutting

16,800 wings per hour.

The company liked the results they were getting with

their first Cantrell CWCS-8400 Wing Segmenter so much

that they bought two more Wing Segmenters which were

installed in November.

“The people at Cantrell were all a pleasure to work with,”

Cowan said. “We at House of Raeford have had a good

experience with the machine and the people of Cantrell.”

At Cantrell, we have had great results with our Wing

Segmenter and would like the opportunity to show

you how the CWCS-8400 can improve your wing

processing operation.
