A Message from the Executive Director Casa Romantica is ‘home’ for inspiring, special experiences and the people of all ages who share them at our historic landmark. In 2019, over 40,000 individuals participated in artistic, cultural, and social events at Casa Romantica, including more than 6,000 children who benefited from our STEAM-centered field trips and our arts education programs for ages 0-18.

The year 2020 has posed unprecedented disruptions for us all. However, Casa Romantica’s mission of providing arts and cultural offerings for people of all ages is not diminished. In fact, it is now more important than ever to find new ways of inspiring our community. I am pleased that our Casa Captivating 2020/21 season plans for a spectrum of in-person, live-stream and virtual participation modalities, reaching our community wherever they are.

This season also includes many exciting new additions including expansions to our dance and theater programs; two new ongoing programs for children; the expansion of our Summer Dance Workshop for children from a half-day into a full-day academy, and our brand new 'Backstage Pass,' an upgraded experience enabling you to see the behind-the-scenes artistry that goes into producing key artistic events at Casa Romantica.

I thank all of you in our Casa Family gratefully for your friendship and support through this unprecedented time. I hope that there will be many occasions in the year ahead for us to connect more deeply, and to make new friends in our community.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I thank you for opening your hearts to Casa Romantica’s mission! By sharing your appreciation for Casa Romantica's offerings with your friends and neighbors, participating in our cultural events in person or online, and supporting our mission philanthropically, you enable Casa Romantica to be a vital resource for our community — a destination for hope, resilience, and shared joy. Children who have visited have been overheard telling their parents, "this is my Casa," and it is — their Casa and yours, too. It is truly the "jewel' of San Clemente, and the silver lining of these times is that our community has grown even larger, and more united in our mission.

Christopher Lutter-Gardella: Magic in the Air Immersive, educational, and community-driven installationJune 25 – September 4, 2021 | FREE with general admission to Casa Romantica

This commission strives to educate the community about plant and insect life, as well as celebrate the magic of pollinators in our gardens.

In weekly workshops during June 2021, community members will help construct insects and flora with repurposed materials. They will help piece together a one-of-a-kind installation that overwhelms the senses and showcases the magic that our gardens have to offer!

About the Artist Christopher Lutter-Gardella is a designer, sculptor, public artist, and community educator. He produces art predominately from waste-stream materials, which explores the unique potential inherent in materials. His works are created with a deep emphasis on eco-consciousness, collaboration, and improvisation.

The purpose of his work is to elevate the importance of pollinators in our community and celebrates the magic of insects in the air around us.

Every Day: Ole Hanson Home and Gardens

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is a vibrant example of Southern California history. Located on 2.5 acres, the Ole Hanson home is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ole Hanson, the visionary founder of San Clemente, commissioned notable architect Carl Lindbom to design this Spanish Colonial Revival home in 1927 as his representation of the California dream. The property passed through many hands throughout the twentieth century. In the late 1980s, a group of forward-thinking individuals saw what Casa Romantica could become took responsibility for its future. It was restored to its original beauty through a major capital campaign, and transformed

into a cultural arts center as well as an architectural and botanical destination.

Today, visitors to Casa Romantica experience the splendor of the estate with tours and permanent exhibits illuminating the history of San Clemente and its founder, as well as the development of Southern California.

Casa Romantica GardensCasa Romantica’s 2.5 acres of coastal gardens are an oasis of beauty and tranquility year-round. The landscape has evolved from Ole Hanson’s first plantings to incorporate extensive water-wise and native plantings to reflect the unique California coastal environment. More than 30 gardens exist today on the grounds, each with unique horticultural features and appeal.
