Message from the Relieving Principal Mr Field

After a very busy and productive term, we are now into the final week and working hard to get lots of work completed before the school holidays. I have enjoyed the opportunity to be the relieving principal at our fantastic school. Mrs Tasker will return from being the relieving Director for Term 4.

Vision Screening We were very lucky to have the opportunity to offer free vision screening to all of our Kindergarten to Year 3 students last week. Most students returned their notes and about 300 free screenings were able to take place.

All students who participated received a showbag and certificate. Parents and carers will be receiving information about their child’s results from the screening soon.

Stage 3 Wyee Camp – Monday 13th October to Wednesday 15th October The camp for Stage 3 students to Wyee is fast approaching. A reminder note will go home this week outlining all the necessary items needed for the camp. We have tried to cover all the questions parents might have but if you have a specific query that’s not covered in the note please contact your child’s teacher. All camp payments need to be finalised by Thursday 18th September.

Year 6 Pyjama/Onesie Fundraiser The Year 6 students would like to thank the students of Casula for their fantastic support of the Pyjama/Onesie Fundraiser Day. $1440 was collected and this money will go towards the Year 6 Farewell and gift to the school. A huge ‘Thank You’ goes to Mrs Coates for the idea and organisation of the event.

Maths Parent Forum Mrs Goetz and Mrs Denner hosted a recent parent forum on Mathematics and they would like to thank the many interested parents who attended. The session looked at addition and subtraction and how it is taught in school.

Mrs Marian Denner Relieving Deputy Principal

Book Parade The Casula PS Book Parade will take place on Wednesday 17 September at 12 noon at the Hall and COLA. Students are asked to come to school dressed up as their favourite book character or as a colour of the rainbow. Parents and community

members are invited to come and watch this fun event that is used to encourage a love of reading in the students. There will be a limited amount of seating available for visitors. If all the seats are taken, parents are welcome to stand around the COLA behind the students who are seated.

Liverpool Arts and Film Festival On Tuesday 9th September, the annual Liverpool Arts and Film Festival (LAaFF) took place at the Liverpool Catholic Club. Students from the junior and senior dance groups and the junior and senior choirs performed for a sold out show. The teachers of the groups- Miss Bordon, Mrs McNaught, Mr Beveridge, Miss Morello and Miss Maine were very proud of all their students. They performed extremely well, looking fantastic in their costumes. Thank you to all the parents and teachers who came to support the young talent at Casula PS and a special thank you to Miss Bordon who organised our groups for the performance.

Premier’s Spelling Bee On Friday 19 September, representatives from Stage 2 (Natalia and Elissa) and Stage 3 (Nisha and Adam) will compete at the Regional Spelling Bee Finals at Miller Public School. Congratulations and best wishes to our Regional representatives.

The Maths Cup On Thursday 4th of September nine students (3 teams) represented our school at The Maths Cup at Amity College. The students were asked to solve hands on puzzles, complex problems and compete in speed tests. Our students competed against 93 other teams (over 200 students). We had teams finish in 8th 9th and 12th place. Well done to Nireeksha, Jay, Antriksh, Timmy, Tony, Mohamed, Tony, Kazi and Ahnaf. Premier’s Debating Challenge Over the last couple of weeks there have been a number of debates. At the most recent debate the Casula Asteroids team competed in the Regional Quarter Final against Smithfield PS. The topic of the debate was: ‘That every child should have a pet’. We were the negative team and argued that we should keep the status quo. Our team of Kazi, Antriksh, Jay and

Pranav formed a very strong case and rebutted the opposition’s key points in good detail. As a result of the fine arguments, the adjudicator awarded our team a winning result. We will now go to compete in the Regional semi-final of The Premier’s Debating Challenge.

Liverpool District Debating Challenge In the last debate for the Liverpool District Debating Competition our team of Marina, Swara, Vyom and Serena debated Prestons PS. It was a very close debate but our team were announced as the winners. A special award was given to Serena for her excellent debating on the day. On Friday 12th of September 16 students who debated in the Liverpool District Debating Challenge travelled to Dalmeny PS for the presentation ceremony for this competition. Our team finished in 4th place overall and received certificates for their achievement. A special thank you goes to Mrs Barbara Sue from Dalmeny PS for organising this competition. The University of NSW Solar Car and Solar Boat Challenge On Saturday 6th of September the 15 Year 6 students from 5/6 Opal competed at the University of NSW Solar Car and Solar Boat Challenge. It was a very challenging day as there was torrential rain at the start of the competition. We entered 3 cars in the Solar Car Races but had to use batteries, as there was no solar energy at the time of racing. Each of our cars had a win. One car made it through to the final eight but didn’t progress any further. By 12:30pm the weather started to look much better and the sun came out! We started to race our boats using the sun’s energy. We had a couple of wins and a lot of fun and laughs. Thank you to all of the parents who transported students to this competition. The Regional Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Final On Wednesday 3rd September Karina represented our school and the Liverpool District at the Regional Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Final. Karina spoke with great eloquence on the topic of religion. The three adjudicators were impressed with her examples and elaboration; ‘a very well balanced speech’ was what one adjudicator commented. The level of competition was a very high standard and Karina can be very proud of remarkable effort. Congratulations Karina!

Mr Michael Davis Debating and Public Speaking Coordinator
