Discussion Objectives:

• To identify the SHARED VISION of what the region want to exchange and communicate and what challenges will be faced to produce and share climate change information through the Platform.

Key points to discuss:

1. Kind of information

2. Sources and data availability

3. Synergies and added value

2

3

Kind of Information

• Main information characteristics to identify the platform scope?

✓ Scientifically based, ✓ Regionally relevant

✓ Comparable ✓ Relevant to policy and research

✓… ?

• What will be the core content?

GHG data, models, technical, scientific, economic and policy-supporting reports, studies and articles, laws and regulations…?

• From where do we want to start?

Informational Needs

Page 4: CEC Platform Kickoff: Discussion Sessions (22 Mar 2012)

4

• Would the platform be mainly fed by regional information and data sources?

• What would be the informational inputs available currently or in the short-term?

• What would be the main challenges to getting/creating and maintaining the information feeds for the platform?

Sources and Data Availability

Synergies and Added Value

• How is this platform different from other climate change informational tools?

• How do we ensure synergies with other clearinghouse initiatives for climate change information?

• Would this platform support other regional and international efforts?

• Discussion Objectives:

– Identify general needs for and role of design, social sharing and collaboration within the climate change platform.

– Discuss potential tools and networks to leverage.

“To enable climate change data and information exchange, in part through the incorporation of emerging, cutting-edge social media tools.”

Approach for the Platform

• Does the platform need something different or more? Why?

– Why is social media important for the platform? Critical or complementary?

• What are we trying to share and who are we trying to reach?

– What are our engagement goals?

• What are our other collaborative needs “to enable climate change data and information exchange”?

– What has worked well for the CEC community? Challenges? Limitations?

• Discussion Objectives:

– Achieve a common understanding of how the GHG and Black Carbon Project and the climate change platform should support each another in reaching their goals.

GHG & Black Carbon Project

14

Introduction

• Both projects share objectives

– Facilitate comparability on climate change information, enable share results and strengthen capacities in the collection and management of climate change data. What will be the core content?

• If the GHG & Black Carbon Project is fully implemented it would mean:

– Comparable and reliable GHG inventories at national and sub-national levels

– Consistent and common methodologies for reporting and quantifying GHG emissions

– Comparable black carbon inventories

– Improved black carbon & other GHG emissions reports

15

GHG Project Contributes to Platform?

• Would the GHG & Black Carbon Project be a main source for the platform? Is the platform the main portal for the GHG & Black Carbon Project?

• Would the projects share the same audience?

• Could the platform achieve its objectives without the GHG & Black Carbon Project inputs?

• How to ensure synergies and avoid duplicity?

• Discussion Objectives:

– Identify ways the carbon sources project and climate change platform can complement each other.

Carbon Sources Overview

– Project Objective: Provide and share the best information available on landscape-level carbon sources and storage by:

• Supplying data, information and tools to monitor and report on initiatives for ecosystem carbon management to reduce GHGs.

• Facilitating broad, accessible mechanism to share and disseminate information among experts with a focus on scientific and technological best practices.

– Tasks include:• Expand the network of experts.

• Develop and test a trilateral methodology and assessment protocol to monitor land cover change and landscape-level carbon.

• Develop a web-based platform for information management and sharing.

20

• How should the two projects support and complement each other?

• How do the two projects differentiate?

– How to ensure synergies and avoid duplicity?

• Do the two projects share the same audience?

– How does this project bring together experts differently?

• What kinds of information and datasets could be shared between the projects?

– Sources? Challenges?

“Will provide data and information for the climate change platform.”
