Better Improvement Adoption
Presenters • Ann Brown, Director Learning and Organizational

Agenda
Neuroscience, the brain and SCARF
Improving improvement projects
Who are we all?
Introduce yourself
Name
Organization
Function
SCARF knowledge 1 – 10
Change knowledge 1 - 5
The Triune Brain
Neocortex – speech, logic, higher thinking skills
Reptilian – instinct, survival
Limbic System - emotions
Focus: To Survive
Flight-or-Fight
Stress
Neuroendocrine changes include an increase in Cortisol – “the stress hormone”
Focus: To Thrive
Relaxation Response
Trust
Neuroendocrine changes include an increase in Oxytocin – “the trust hormone”
THREAT REWARD
Judgment diminishes, aggression (and physical
energy) may increase
Problem- solving abilities reduced
Difficulties accessing long-term memory
Ability to remember decreases, impacting learning
Message receptors shut
down, terminates meaningful
rapport
Pessimism and perceived
threats/insults increase
Limbic system
aroused
Executive functions: Logic decreases, irrationality
increases

Reward Response
SCARF and real life
The more SCARF we perceive, the more our brain feels “rewarded” and the more we trust
The less SCARF we perceive, the more our brain feels “threatened” the more defensive we become…and maybe more irrational
For engagement we want the perception of as much SCARF as reasonably possible
In Summary…
The Shift
From To SCARF
Buy – in Ownership Status
Problems Solutions Certainty
Big initiatives Small changes Certainty
Tell Ask questions Autonomy, Status

At your table:
What did you hear, what made sense to you? Could this approach be a lens for one of your projects or situations? Do you have examples?
Debrief
Conversation on SCARF
• What area provides you with the most “reward” right now?
• Which area feels the most threatened?
