AACEI Chinook-Calgary Newsletter –January & February 2015 1
CHINOOK Volume 14, Issue 5 & 6 Newsletter of the Chinook-Calgary Section January - February 2015
President’s Message Hello AACEI Chinook-Calgary,
The objective of the newsletter is to share details of recent and future events with our
members. This newsletter covers event details of both January and February. Chinook
BOD every year analyze the current job market situation in order to identify various
workshops and seminar primarily required for the professional development of Project
Control Professionals in Calgary. Our main focus during 2015-15 has been on
arranging various certification program workshops and up to now we have already
arranged Skills & Knowledge Workshop on Planning Scheduling attended by large
number of Project Control professionals from Owners as well as EPCM organizations.
Historically January of every year is dedicated for the university students to present
their research works. It provides good opportunity to students to present their research
works on major professional forum. It provides social networking opportunities to
students as well. January speaker was Nesreen Weshah who is a Ph.D. student in
University of Calgary. Her topic was “Developing an Interface Management Model
for Construction Projects” and was based on her current research work. Further details
can be found in the following pages. February speaker was Hammad Tahir who
discussed “Effective Planning for major EPC Projects”.
Please do not forget to register for two important workshops in March and April of 2015 on “Cost & Schedule Management’
and Cost Estimating Professional (CEP). The CEP workshop will support those professionals who plan to write the CEP
exam. I will strongly recommend our section members to spread the message to the friends who are planning to enhance their
cost and estimation knowledge and skill to register for these workshops.
The continuous support of the members of AACE-Chinook section has made it the world’s largest, active and most
successful section, with 850 members. All members are requested to play active roles in various section activities and come
forward with useful recommendations to enhance the performance of the section because this is our section.
Guest Speakers
The guest speaker for March dinner meeting will be Junaid Mahoon who is a Director Project Control, Major Projects in
Suncor. His presentation topic is “How to effectively set up projects for successful outcomes – The Role of Project Controls”.
Members can register for this dinner meeting on our section’s website at www.aaceicalgary.org.

DINNER MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
Wednesday – March 18th, 2015
How to effectively set up Projects for successful outcomes – The Role of Project Controls
Presenter: Junaid Mahoon – BSc Chemical Engineering
Presenters Bio:
Junaid possess 20+ years of project management experience in the Oil & Gas and Petrochemical Industry.
He has successfully worked in the capacities of Project Controls Manager, Project Engineer, and currently
holds the position of Director of Project Controls for Suncor, Major Projects. Junaid has many years’
experience on both large ($2+Billion) to small, sustaining projects (130+ projects). The major projects he
worked include; Secondary Upgrading on the Voyageur project. Irving Oil Refinery in St. John, New
Brunswick and various projects with Descon Engineering in Lahore, Pakistan.
Junaid is very passionate about mentoring the industry professionals in various cost engineering fields.
Presentation Topic:
Time and again, projects in the Oil and Gas industry have seen project cost forecast significantly increasing
from the conception stage to project completion (some over 100% of published forecast)
In Alberta, especially in the Wood Buffalo region, this has become the norm, regardless of the size of
project. Historically, projects have been forced to accept these overruns; however, in the current economic
environment, the market is no longer favorable to allow this trend to continue.
As Project Controls professionals, we have a direct and significant role to play to get it right the FIRST
time. As owners and key stakeholders in development of the oilsands, capital stewardship and fiscal
prudence is paramount to the longevity of our business.
This presentation will outline key principles for consideration and input into sound development of projects
controls methodology (estimate, cost, and schedule) at each development stage of the project

Developing an Interface Management (IM) Model for Construction Projects (Research Night)
Presenters: Nesreen Weshah
By: Mustansir Raj
Nesreen presentation was about Developing an Interface Management (IM) Model for Construction Projects.
She explained that though Interface Management (IM) is a main factor in the success of construction projects, the
essentials of IM and the severity of interface problems for different projects from last three decades has not received
the necessary level of awareness, negatively affecting project performance.
The objectives of her study were twofold: (a) enhancing the IM among different project participants involved in the
construction projects and (b) increasing the effectiveness of IM throughout the project lifecycle focusing specifically
on the engineering/design phase. The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches (Mixed methods) to
investigate, identify, and classify interface problem factors in construction projects.
It was a great presentation and the participants showed lot of interest in the subject. Thanks Nesreen.
This was first dinner meeting of the New Year 2015 with over 30 participants. The section vice president, Mustansir
Raj, opened the meeting with New Year Greetings. He outlined forthcoming winter seminar, CEP workshop and other
events. Mahendra Bhatia briefed about Winter Seminar and urged all to register for the same.
Sandra Mejia Villegas and Diana did a short presentation about AACEI WPC (women in project control committee).
Both are officers of AACE WPC.
Mohsen Andayesh introduced the speaker and Finally Mustansir Raj presented the vote of thanks and gift to the
speaker.
