  • PASSING THE TESTPASSING THE TESTPASSING THE TEST

“Test” is a four-letter word. Spelling tests, driving tests, SATs, all bring a knot to the stomach. Tests are something we would rather forgo, but also something we must undergo. Lent, too, is a four-letter word and is also a kind of test, for the only way to Easter is to pass through Lent. Today’s

reading from Deuteronomy commends Israel for its faith in the God who saves. No matter the tribulation, Israel’s faith enables it to persevere. This faith/test theme also appears in the reading from Romans. Paul boldly asserts that faith in Christ will see the believer through any trial. The Gospel passage makes it clear that even Jesus was tested. It describes a test, a struggle between good and evil, that dramatically demonstrates Jesus’ faith in the power of God’s life in him. This power enables him to overcome temptation. This power is with all of us who celebrate the test of Lent, a power enabling us to pass with flying colors. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    DDOO YYOUOU KKNOWNOW??

… that we soon will have the “ELECT” amongst us?

For those of you who attend the 8:30 Mass on Sundays you have been watching adults and children be sent from Mass after the homily. These people are part of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), and the process adapted for children. They are people who have come to inquire about the Catholic Church.

You have watched them being received and called “catechumens” The catechumens will today participate in a Rite of Sending which will send them to their election by the Bishop. As part of this rite they will inscribe their names into the Book of the Elect which will be carried to the cere-mony, called the Rite of Election, with the Bishop, and will be held at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament this weekend.. This will be one of four ceremonies where cate-chumens from all over the diocese participate. Each of these ceremonies have over 1000 people preparing for full reception into the Catholic Church. Those to be baptized will be received into full reception at the Easter Vigil and those who have already been baptized will be received at some other appropriate time. This year it will be celebrated at St. Lawrence on April 7.

After the Rite of Election the catechumens will be called the “Elect” and will be entering the period of purification and enlightenment, a time that coincides with Lent. This is a time of more intense spiritual preparation. They will pray, fast and give alms in preparation for baptism, confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

Our candidate will also be sent to the bishop for the rite of calling the candidates to continuing conversion. This is done in conjunction with the Rite of Election explained above. Catechumens and candidates will be accompanied by their godparents/sponsor who walk their journey with them and provide guidance, prayer and example.

Please pray for the Elect and the candidate seeking full re-ception into the Catholic Church. on their journey during this period of Lent so that we too can find our identity as disciples of the Lord.

Stewardship requires a personal conversion. In addition to sharing resources, stewards share their lives and under-standing that everything depends on God. Day by day, step by step, stewards open their hearts to God's plan for their lives.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

  • HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, PRAY FOR US

“The pious and learned Jesuit, Suarez, Justus Lipsius, a devout and erudite theologian of Louvain, and many others have proved incontestably that devotion to our Blessed

Lady is necessary to attain salvation. This they show from the teaching of the Fathers, notably St. Augustine, St. Ephrem, deacon of Edessa, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Germanus of Constantinople, St. John Demascene, St. Anselm, St. Bernard, St. Bernardine, St. Thomas and St. Bonaventure. Even according to Oecolampadius and other heretics, lack of esteem and love for the Virgin Mary is an infallible sign of God's disapproval. On the other hand, to be entirely and genuinely devoted to her is a sure sign of God's approval.” --Saint Louis Marie de Montfort

THE LORD WHO WILL NEVER LEAVE US Meditation

Today the world has special need of people whose minds and hearts have been enlightened by the word of the Lord and who can offer a credible witness that opens the hearts and minds of many others to desire God and true life, life without end (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 15).

On February 13, a more intense phase of the Year of Faith begins. Ash Wednesday “opens the door” to the Lenten journey of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that leads the catechumens to the life-giving waters of baptism and the rest of us to the renewal of our baptismal vows. On the Sunday before Lent, to encourage us to turn away from sin and begin anew on the path of personal conversion and public witness, Luke shows us Jesus refusing to leave sinful Peter. Indeed, Jesus calls Peter to “catch” others so they can have life in all its fullness. Luke doesn’t say “fish” for people, as Matthew and Mark do, but “catch,” using a special Greek word that means “catch alive,” that is, rescue from the wild for a new and better life. We who have been “caught alive” to enjoy “life in all its fullness” are sent to rescue our brothers and sisters, fellow sinners, from danger and lead them to fullness of life with Jesus. Mission Prepare for a special “Year of Faith” Lent by identifying the sins that keep me from a deeper friendship with Christ and determining what specific form my Lenten conversion should take. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Our Lord told St. Gertrude the Great that the following prayer would release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was extended to include living sinners as well:

“Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for the Holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen”

    TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven activities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life’s journey in gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, provid-ing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three “pillars” of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over death’s darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end of life’s journey: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of heaven. —James Field, Copyright © J.
