Welcome Cub Scout Pact 53
We are pleased to wel-
come the newest addition
to the Church of the Holy
Apostles family: the in-
trepid young Scouts of
Cub Scout Pack 53! The
Pack began meeting here
in March. They were in
need of a new home and
this, in turn, presented a
wonderful opportunity
for the church to broaden
its outreach in the com-
munity and embark on a
new path of youth minis-
try. Pack 53 is comprised
of five dens, with approx-
imately 40 boys in 1st
through 5th grade, and
includes a great group of
volunteer leaders and in-
volved parents.
Pack 53 typically meets
three Tuesdays per month
during the school year
with two meeting sched-
uled as Den meetings in
the Sunday school class-
rooms (or outside) and
one meeting as a Pack
meeting in the Parish Life
Center. In addition, the
Pack is involved in activi-
ties such as community
service projects, Pin-
ewood Derby car races,
and (of course) lots of
camping! Next month,
the Pack is conducting a
two day Explorers pro-
gram at the U.S. Space
and Rocket Center (Space
Camp) in Huntsville, Ala-
bama. Previous big out-
ings were overnights on
the USS Alabama and in
the Cumberland Caverns.
For families with young
boys looking for a mean-
ingful, fun activity, Cub
Scout Pack 53 is a superb
destination.
Holy Apostles is pleased
for the opportunity to
Invite Welcome Connect In August of last year,
Mary Parmer visited Holy
Apostles and taught us
the importance of Invite
Welcome Connect. Since
then, committees focused
on each of these three
areas have met to review
the thoughts and ideas
generated by her presen-
tation and are in the pro-
cess of developing a con-
crete plan for implemen-
tation in our parish.
Our goal is to claim this
important initiative and
intentionally grow our
membership and minis-
try. While we are already
known as a warm, wel-

Page 2 THE ACTS
The Church’s story,
like our family
stories, is a web of
relationships of
people who, being
moved by the Holy
Spirit, shared a
common life of
proclaiming the
Gospel … and of
walking in the way
of the Lord.
Letters by The Rev. John P. Leach
Recently, my sisters sorted
many of our “family papers.”
These documents included
letters from our parents to
their parents, love letters writ-
ten by our parents, letters
from family members and
from friends. The letters are a
treasure trove of relationships
and, in some cases, revela-
tions of tensions and difficul-
ties unknown to us. Hearing
the stories of these letters,
and actually reading some of
them is fascinating, at the
same time, making each of us
less innocent or naïve to our
family’s history and story.
That there are actual letters in
actual envelopes is nostalgic
and neat, no emails at all.
However, most intriguing is
the web of relationships of
people that I knew and, in
some cases, still know. Many
of these folks, both recipients
and writers of letters, were
people we discussed, ate din-
ner with, visited on trips or
received condolences from
when our parents died. Some
we knew and others we did
not. Some we loved and ad-
mired, and others we did not.
Regardless, at some point and
time, all of them were a part
of our family’s story.
In reading them, I thought
about the many letters St.
Paul wrote to the various
churches he helped found. As
we read the Acts of the Apos-
tles during the Great Fifty
Days of Easter, and as we
read Paul’s letters, we hear
many names of folks who
were instrumental in the
growth of Christianity in the
First Century. That we have a
record of Paul’s letters and a
record of those relationships
he formed in his missionary
efforts is incredibly moving.
The Church’s story, like our
family stories, is a web of rela-
tionships of people who, be-
ing moved by the Holy Spirit,
shared a common life of pro-
claiming the Gospel, of bap-
tizing converts to the faith, of
teaching the life and ministry
of Jesus and of walking in the
way of the Lord. Our story as
a people of faith today, is
connected insolubly to those
who came before us.
This story of faith begins to
spread because the women
who loved Jesus came to the
tomb to find it empty, and in
so doing, they encountered
the Risen Lord. From this
moment forward, their proc-
lamation became the Church’s
narrative; that death gives way
to new life; that sin gives way
to forgiveness; that despair
gives way to hope. Simply,
reading and hearing their sto-
ry, reading and hearing the
letters of their story to the
early Church allows us to live
out this story in our lives to-
day. They are a part of us, and
we are a part of the story that
now falls upon us to share.

Rector’s Forum in April
Page 3 VOLUME 14, ISSUE 4
Rector’s Forum takes place
each Sunday at 10:15 a.m. in
the Parish Life Center.
On April 3rd, Fr. John Leach
will wrap-up his multi-part
series on The History of the
Church.
On April 10th and 17th we
will host Dr. Miriam G. Clin-
ton, Assistant Professor of
Art and Art History at
Rhodes College. Her presen-
tation is entitled, "Enter the
Sun King: Constantine the
Great and the Aesthetic of
Late Antiquity." As a classical
archaeologist, Miriam focuses
on the art and archaeology of
the ancient world. She has
extensive fieldwork experi-
ence on excavations in both
Greece and Italy and serves
as an architectural and digital
archaeology specialist. She
earned her BA from Yale
University in Classics and
Archaeological Studies and
both her MA and PhD from
the University of Pennsylva-
nia in Art and Archaeology
of the Mediterranean World.
On April 24th we will be
hosting Bishop Johnson.
Rector’s Forum will resume
on May 1st.

Reading with the Rector Tuesday, April 19th at 6:30 p.m.
Our April selection for Read-
ing with the Rector is the
award-winning book, The
Givenness of Things by Mari-
lynne Robinson. This collec-
tion of essays examines our
culture and how “we have
become less interested in the
exploration of the glorious
mind, and more interested in
creating and mastering tech-
nologies that will yield materi-
al well-being. But while cul-
tural pessimism is always
fashionable, there is still much
to give us hope….Robinson
delivers a passionate “critique
of contemporary society while
arguing that reverence must
be given to who we are and
what we are: creatures of sin-
gular interest and value, de-
spite our errors and depreda-
tions” (amazon.com).
Please join us as we meet for
a lively discussion of the book
(and snacks) on April 19th at
6:30 p.m. in the conference
room. All are welcome to
participate. Please contact
Eileen Cashbaugh
([email protected]) with
any questions.
A list of the book selections
for the year can be found on

Welcoming the Future
The results are in!
In January, Episcopal Church
Foundation (ECF) surveyed
the parish and gathered your
thoughts about our proposed
Master Plan. Thank you for
your incredible response and
your valuable insight into our
future here at Holy Apostles!
Our consultant, Nick Sollog,
was here on March 6th to
share the results of the Feasi-
bility Study. We are excited
that those results show a will-
ingness to move forward and
grow our church. The next
step is for the Vestry to meet,
review the report in depth
and present a plan based up-
on your input.
If you wish to view a copy of
the Feasibility Report, please
visit our website.
Stay tuned for more exciting
news about our next steps!

From Cub Scout Pack 53 ~
Thanks for having us! The
leaders, parents, and Scouts of
Pack 53 are exceptionally
grateful to call Church of the
Holy Apostles our new home.
The relationship between a
Cub Scout Pack and its Charter
Organization is not simply a
relationship of convenience
and we don’t just “borrow” the
church spaces. As outlined in
our annual Unit Charter Agree-
ment, we actually belong to the
church. Under that Agreement,
the Cub Scout Pack is another
avenue by which the church
conducts youth ministry.
Through the Scouting Pro-
gram, the Charter Organization
accomplishes the objectives of
youth character development,
faith-based youth ministry, and
community service. The Pack
is looking forward to being an
active part of the church life
and calendar with Scout Ser-
vice Sundays (where the pack
membership participates in the
Sunday service), as well as con-
ducting service projects for the
church, participating in food
drives, and anything else we
can think of to make the world
a better place on behalf of
Church of the Holy Apostles.
The church has so much to
offer in terms of support from
the church leadership and staff,
as well as the building and
grounds. The Sunday school
rooms work well for our den
meetings and the Parish Life
Center will work equally well
for the once-a-month Pack
Meeting, the annual Blue and
Gold Banquet, and the always
popular Pinewood Derby rac-
es. The outdoor spaces around
the church are a welcome bo-
nus as well. With nice weather
quickly approaching, the natu-
ral path to the river, outdoor
Chapel area (built as an Eagle
Scout project by church mem-
ber Alex Beason no less), and
the play area are going to see a
lot of use. We couldn’t be
happier and more thankful to
have such a welcoming, gra-
cious host as Church of the
Holy Apostles. On behalf of
Cub Scout Pack 53, I would
like to extend a very sincere
Thank You!

tive, Treasurer, and Holy Apostles

Attendance:
This year marks the 125th anni-
versary of the ministry of the
United Thank Offering (UTO)
campaign, and Holy Apostles
invites everyone to participate.
The United Thank Offering of
the Episcopal Church is a per-
sonal spiritual discipline of
thanksgiving that supports
God’s mission throughout the
world.
You can give thanks for the
good things that happen every
day - for the little things and
for the big things, by putting
some coins or dollars into your
UTO collection box.
UTO collection boxes will be
available on the ushers table
and in the narthex beginning
Easter Sunday. Participants are
asked to collect spare change
and “fill” the boxes between
Easter and Pentecost.
On Pentecost Sunday, May
15th, families may bring their
UTO boxes to the front of the
church during each service.
Boxes may also be turned in to
the Parish office.
Invite, continued from page 1
coming place to worship, tak-
ing this next step will allow us
to share more of what we have
to offer with others in our
community and beyond.
Invite - Evangelism
Invitation is not only about
inviting people into a relation-
ship with you and others in
your congregation, but rather it
is about inviting them into a
relationship with God through
Jesus.
Welcome -
Ministry of Hospitality
Welcoming the stranger is wel-
coming Jesus. Jesus paid atten-
tion to what was going on
around him and especially to
those people he encountered
on a daily basis. He modeled
for us a new way of seeing the
other - the way of love, com-
passion, and forgiveness.
Connect - Assimilation
Connection is giving meaning
to membership and discover-
ing the gifts of the people.
Connection helps the newcom-
er answer these questions:
Where do I fit in? Can I make
friends in this church? Is there
room for me relationally? Does
this church need me? Can I
find a place to belong and
serve? Am I safe here?
