ADDRESSING SOCIAL AND MORAL ISSUES IN THE PUBLIC FORUM – PART 2 This continues a short series of brief outlines of several current social issues facing us as a nation and

society from the perspective of their moral content based on the principles of the Natural Law, as a broader alternative to basing our moral position on these and other issues on our own religious convictions alone.

1. Codified in our American System of Jurisprudence is the principle that the punishment must fit the crime. Anyone who knows anything about out penal system is also aware of the pressing need for ongoing prison and justice system reform, from sentencing guidelines to issues of rehabilitation and reinsertion of former inmates into society as more productive members of society. A prison, while it is a place where those who have committed serious enough crimes can begin to pay back their debt to the society they have corrupted, still needs to respect the unalienable dignity of the human person, and ideally help them reform their lives in order to return to society if possible better than when they entered. Criminal recidivism is good for no one. It costs far less by way of law enforcement resources used, court costs, and maintaining prison inmates to establish viable and effective rehabilitation programs. Recurring incarceration can often further harden criminal tendencies and behaviors and contribute to degrading the inmate even further, returning them to society even worse than before. For more information, visit the U.S. Department of Justice website at justice.gov/archives/prison-reform.

2. Enshrined in our Bill of Rights is “the unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” We are not masters of life, but we are responsible for it, our own and that of others, at least in general. Liberty is the criterion for being able to develop our gifts and abilities and of being able to contribute in our part to the common good of our society. Our liberty and personal freedoms, however, cannot be used as a pretext for denying the freedoms of others. To do so would, among other things, deny to society as a whole the benefit of the contributions their gifts and abilities could make. Perhaps the most troubling issue today that does just that is that of abortion. Much like the issue of slavery up until the Civil War, that fundamental provision of one of our Founding Documents is yet to be applied universally to include the unborn, and it is a struggle we dare not lose. The next victims of arbitrary governmental dictate in this area could very well be you or me if someone decides that for expediency’s sake or their own skewed sense of personal liberty our lives are also deemed to be a “disposable choice.” (To be continued.)

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS FOR NEXT SUNDAY, 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME:

Ezekiel 18:25-28 “Conversion” goes in both directions: turning towards God and the eternal salvation he offers, or away from God and forfeiture of eternal life.

Philippians 2:1-11 We can only “have in [ourselves] the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus” if we take the time to know him for who he really is, and make the effort at “being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart” with one another.

St. Matthew 21:28-32 Our ‘yes’ to God in faith is of no value unless it is lived each day by seeking and doing the will of God.

"Open Wide Our Hearts: The Catholic Church Confronts Racism" Webinar Recording

https://www.youtube.com and then search Open Wide Our Hearts: The Catholic Church Confronts Racism Description: The tragic death of George Floyd has ignited a public conversation about ongoing racial inequity and injustice in America. How can the Church uphold the dignity of all human per-sons and foster the common good during these contentious times? What issues do we need to address within the Church that prevent an ap-propriate response. The Minnesota Catholic Conference, the public policy voice of the Catho-lic Church in Minnesota, hosted this forum on the memorial of St. Peter Claver, to provide an opportunity for formation and reflection on these critical issues in our community, and how we as a Church can respond. Featuring Bishop Shelton Fabre, bishop of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, chairman, USCCB Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism

Archdiocesan Synod -Year 2 (2020-2021): The Church Prepares

Praying with Scripture Series This five-part virtual series on praying with

Scripture offers practical tools for growing in holi-ness, drawing upon the rich tradition of the Cath-olic Church. Archbishop Hebda and Bishop Cozzens will teach the fundamentals of praying with Scripture and explain how to use a Prayer Companion resource to enrich your prayer expe-rience. This series began September 13. Watch at your convenience with family, friends or on your own. It is not too late to join!

Healing and Hope Series This five-part virtual retreat grounds each

person in his or her fundamental identity as a be-loved child of God. Yet each person has experi-enced wounds that bind. This retreat explores how to unbind these knots through the interces-sion of Our Lady, Un-doer of Knots, and open these wounds to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. En-countering Jesus’ love and mercy brings healing and hope. This series begins October 18.

Faith and Culture Series Inspired by the thousands of participants at

the Prayer & Listening Events, this series con-nects their stories to the story of the Church. It explores:

The sources of Catholic teaching (Scripture, tradition and magisterium);

The Church’s teaching on sexual morality and the family;

The Church’s understanding on the dignity of women; and

The priesthood (both the baptized and or-dained).

These sessions are scheduled for January and February 2021. Synod at Home — Growing in Faith Together In the Synod process, the Church is taking time to listen to one another, pray, and discuss in or-der to determine priorities. These steps are im-portant for every home too. The Synod at Home will give local Catholics the structure and tools for walking through this process together. Individ-uals, couples and families will find their faith and relationships strengthened by this Synod at Home.
