Dear Parishioners, A number of parishioners asked me for the prayers I ended last Sunday’s homily with. There are four different types of prayers described in the Gospels. People some-times refer to them by the word ACTS, which is formed by taking the first letter of each type of prayer: A: Adoration C: Contrition T: Thanksgiving S: Supplication

I ended the sermon with a prayer of supplication to Jesus: Voice of Jesus, call us when we stray. Eyes of Jesus, look upon us when we need encouragement. Face of Jesus, smile upon us when we need assurance. Hands of Jesus, anoint us when we grow weary. Arms of Jesus, lift us up when we stumble. Blood of Jesus, wash us clean when we grow soiled. Body of Jesus, feed us when we grow hungry. Heart of Jesus, help us love one another as you have loved us. Blessings, Fr. Mario

Pancake Breakfast There will be no Pancake Breakfast in the month of August. We will resume in September.

USING OUR TIME WISELY A jar of honey lasts practically forever. The oldest jar of hon-ey ever discovered was over five thousand years old. Honey is quite different from market-fresh produce, then; because most fruits and vegetables last only a few days, we treat them carefully. At this time of summer, we rush to find recipes for cherries and cucumbers so we won’t waste a single one. We wouldn’t feel that same urgency about honey. In our own way, we are as delightful and fragile as ripe pro-duce. Today’s readings urge us not to spoil, but to make good use of our limited time on earth. Ecclesiastes reminds us that because God provides for us now and always, we can manage our daily affairs without anxiety. Saint Paul encourages the Colossians to keep thoughts of heaven in everything they do, and Jesus himself asks us to treasure not earthly wealth, but God alone. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Apart from the period from Thanksgiving through Christ-mas, the summer is a favored time for family reunions. We trace family trees and recall our origins. Worship has a family tree as well, and the way we celebrate today has been influenced by various styles and customs through the centuries. We are Western Christians of the Latin Rite. By far, we are the most numerous Western Chris-tians, but there are other ritual families as well. The Arch-diocese of Milan in Italy follows the Ambrosian Rite, Toledo in Spain preserves the Mozarabic Rite and the Arab language, and Lyons in France is home to the Galli-can Rite. Other liturgical families, such as the Celtic in Ireland and the Sarum in England, faded away after the Reformation. Until recent times, members of some an-cient religious orders such as Carmelites and Trappists followed a pattern of Mass that varied slightly from the plan observed in Latin Rite parishes. Isn’t the Catholic Church the same everywhere? Not at all. It never has been! The existence of so many liturgical families in the West reminds us that unity, not uniformity, is what the Church seeks to achieve among her children. We are unit-ed in faith, but wonderfully diverse in rituals, ceremonies, languages, customs, and spirituality. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

Saint Francis of Assisi

#11. Francis helps us to see that an integral ecology calls for openness to categories which transcend the language of mathematics and biology, and take us to the heart of what it is to be human. Just as happens when we fall in love with someone, whenever he would gaze at the sun, the moon or the smallest of animals, he burst into song, drawing all other creatures into his praise. He communed with all creation, even preaching to the flowers, inviting them “to praise the Lord, just as if they were endowed with reason”. His re-sponse to the world around him was so much more than in-tellectual appreciation or economic calculus, for to him each and every creature was a sister united to him by bonds of affection. That is why he felt called to care for all that exists. His disciple Saint Bonaventure tells us that, “from a reflec-tion on the primary source of all things, filled with even more abundant piety, he would call creatures, no matter how small, by the name of ‘brother’ or ‘sister’”. Such a convic-tion cannot be written off as naive romanticism, for it affects the choices which determine our behaviour. If we approach nature and the environment without this openness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs. By contrast, if we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously. The poverty and auster-ity of Saint Francis were no mere veneer of asceticism, but something much more radical: a refusal to turn reality into an object simply to be used and controlled. Fr. Terry’s Remarks: Each day as we come to the centre of our Mass, just as we begin the Eucharistic prayer, we most solemnly state: '' You are indeed holy, O Lord, and All you have created rightly gives you praise, for through your Son Our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, YOU give LIFE to ALL THINGS and MAKE T'HEM HOLY.'' St. Francis grasped and believed these words. In the Mass, in the Church's ancient prayers, the words mean what they say. Such as we pray a few mo-ments later: '' THIS is MY BODY'' and ''THIS is MY BLOOD.'' We do not question these words, we believe them instantly. That is how St. Francis, when he looked around him, he saw God's Hand in all Creation not just in the Sun, Moon and Stars. He saw the holiness of all the creatures around him, in the birds, in the fish, in the plants, in the soil. Pope Francis is turning our eyes, our hearts, our spirits in this direction so that we can call every creature no matter how little: Brother or Sister or Beloved. Our language has to be one of loving fraternity. Otherwise we become mas-ters, consumers or ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits to our immediate needs. This calls for real faith.
