HOPE AND LIFE Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a per-secutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#136

Culture, thought and education

The Homily

Let us renew our confidence in preaching, based on the conviction that it is God who seeks to reach out to others through the preacher, and that he displays his power through human words. Saint Paul speaks forcefully about the need to preach, since the Lord desires to reach other people by means of our word (cf. Rom 10:14-17). By his words our Lord won over the hearts of the people; they came to hear him from all parts (cf. Mk 1:45); they were amazed at his teachings (cf. Mk 6:2), and they sensed that he spoke to them as one with authority (cf. Mk 1:27). By their words the apostles, whom Christ established “to be with him and to be sent out to preach” (Mk 3:14), brought all nations to the bosom of the Church (cf. Mt 16:15.20). Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Most of us when we desire grace or inspiration in our lives turn to prayer. God forbid that anything I say or write would encourage you to pray less. However, as I'm always reminding you, when God fully revealed Himself to us, He came among us as a child. That is how He continues to speak to us today. From today on, all of us will try to renew our faith and confidence in homiletics: Gazing in wonder and awe at the Child in the Manger, at the Bread and Chalice held up for our hope and adoration, at the Figure hanging on the Cross, let us renew our confidence that God is reaching out to us in the words, gestures and sincerity of your lim-ited homilist. Jesus spoke simply to the people as he moved around Samaria and Galilee and they were amazed at his words. This same Christ uses us poor instruments to communicate his grace and salvation to each of you in our stumbling speech and weird accents and poor theolo-gy. If any of you are going to be fretting because you will miss the start of the Warrior’s game it might not be a bad idea to stay at home and offer the result to the Lord and then come to Confession like every good Catholic. As Pope Francis reminds us it was by the words and the journeying of the Apostles and missionaries that all nations have come to follow Christ. Let Grace enter in.
