Diocesan Priest Retirement Collection The special collection for the Diocesan Priest Retirement Benefit Trust is this weekend September 7-8, 2019. This collection allows us to express gratitude and support for our retired and soon-to-be-retired priests, many of whom are still “laboring in the vineyard” in service to the faith-ful. They now face retirement with minimal government assistance. Please prayerfully consider how you can match their generosity to the Church by contributing to the Re-tirement Fund.

POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or en-joyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious edu-cation and parish programs resumed, too. No sur-prise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wis-dom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Je-sus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn week-end, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Building Fund There will be a collection next weekend for our Building Fund. These funds will be used for mainte-

LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

#16. Although each chapter will have its own subject and specific approach, it will also take up and re-examine important questions previously dealt with. This is particularly the case with a number of themes which will reappear as the Encyclical unfolds. As examples, I will point to the intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet, the conviction that everything in the world is connected, the critique of new paradigms and forms of power derived from technology, the call to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress, the value proper to each creature, the human meaning of ecology, the need for forthright and honest debate, the serious responsibility of international and local policy, the throwaway culture and the proposal of a new lifestyle. These questions will not be dealt with once and for all, but reframed and enriched again and again. Fr. Terry’s Remarks: Last Sunday, Pope Francis prepared us for a long and deep examination of the state of our Mother Earth. This week he ex-plains how it will unfold. There will be, as we would expect a number of themes and he and we will reflect on some of them more than once. For example, the close relationship between the poor and the fragility of our mother will come up more than once. One of the reasons many of us don't feel the pain at the moment is that our water comes from the faucet and not from a well or stream. The very poor are looking even now at their dried up well. So technology will be examined with its wonderful benefits and its flip side the damage and hurt caused. We need to be ready and prepared for an open and honest debate. Read what Pope Francis writes: ''these questions will not be dealt with once and for all, but reframed and enriched again and again.'' Let us begin with open minds and prayerful hearts.
