SENT BY GOD In Amos’ time the vocation of prophet had achieved a very formal status in Israel. The prophets had arisen, origi-nally, to act as God’s voice when Israel was no longer led by the spiritual/civil figures known as “judges,” but by monarchs. Over time, the monarchy had appropriated the offices of priest and prophet, established them into compa-nies, and reserved the right to appoint courtly prophets. Then, as now, when those in power also got to choose who would act as their official conscience, things sometimes went awry. At such times, God raised up prophets from unlikely places, and this is how Amos received his voca-tion as prophet. In last week’s Gospel we heard how Jesus was raised up as God’s anointed from a place many viewed as unlikely. As we continue to discern our own vocation as baptized disciples, we can be assured that we are, in Paul’s words, “chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will” (Ephesians 1:11). LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#89 Yes to the new relationships brought by Christ Isolation, which is a version of immanentism, can find expression in a false autonomy which has no place for God. But in the realm of religion it can also take the form of a spiritual consumerism tailored to one’s own un-healthy individualism. The return to the sacred and the quest for spirituality which mark our own time are ambig-uous phenomena. Today, our challenge is not so much atheism as the need to respond adequately to many peo-ple’s thirst for God, lest they try to satisfy it with alienat-ing solutions or with a disembodied Jesus who demands nothing of us with regard to others. Unless these people find in the Church a spirituality which can offer healing and liberation, and fill them with life and peace, while at the same time summoning them to fraternal communion and missionary fruitfulness, they will end up by being taken in by solutions which neither make life truly human nor give glory to God. Fr. Terry’s Remarks—Because we live in a world that is constantly evolving and changing, it is very easy for many of us to feel helpless or threatened. Our instinct is to retreat and create my own cell where I can be with Jesus and keep away as much as possible from all the dis-puting, the babbling, the ugliness. Now, I am not saying that there are not certain people who are called to lives of deep contemplation and silence. These special souls are rare. The rest of us meet Jesus, see God, encounter the Holy Spirit in day to day encounters with our fellows. We carry Jesus to the rest of humanity by being deeply involved in their lives. We need to accept them, we need to get to know them, we need to listen to them and re-spond to them in a Jesus way. Paying too much attention to dress, posture, language, even prayer formulas can be and I feel too often are another way of pulling away from the ordinary folk, the ones Jesus loved to eat, drink and mix with. Every one of us has to believe that you are Christ to others. You are the one in which they come to recognize the face of God. It’s an awesome calling, but it turns us away from our imagined fears, our sense of un-worthiness, the idea that we have to spend all our time trying to please God or save our souls. The simple truth is we can't do either. But we can be great disciples just by being our genuine selves. When we heal and liberate our-selves we instinctively do the same for others. People to-day are not looking for atheism. They are looking for God. Introduce Him to them and find Him in them.
