Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process for adults who wish to become Catholics. They meet weekly with the RCIA team for several months to receive the sacra-ments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion at the Easter Vigil. The low-key and confidential meetings are where we share our spirituality as well as discuss the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have been baptized and have received First Communion but not Confirmation are welcome to join if they wish to be con-firmed in a diocesan ceremony in February. We also welcome adult Catholics who simply want to learn more about their faith. Also cordially invited are fully-initiated Catholics who are moved to simply share their faith as team members. Expe-rience and training are not requirements. Our first meeting this year will be on Sunday, October 11th at 9:45a.m. in the St. Joseph Room in the Parish Hall directly after 9:00a.m. Mass. Interested parties including RCIA team volunteers may call Marty Mijalski, 510-582-3511.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#102 Other ecclesial challenges Lay people are, put simply, the vast majority of the peo-ple of God. The minority – ordained ministers – are at their service. There has been a growing awareness of the identity and mission of the laity in the Church. We can count on many lay persons, although still not nearly enough, who have a deeply-rooted sense of community and great fidelity to the tasks of charity, catechesis and the celebration of the faith. At the same time, a clear awareness of this responsibility of the laity, grounded in their baptism and confirmation, does not appear in the same way in all places. In some cases, it is because lay persons have not been given the formation needed to take on important responsibilities. In others, it is because in their particular Churches room has not been made for them to speak and to act, due to an excessive clericalism which keeps them away from decision-making. Even if many are now involved in the lay ministries, this involve-ment is not reflected in a greater penetration of Christian values in the social, political and economic sectors. It of-ten remains tied to tasks within the Church, without a real commitment to applying the Gospel to the transformation of society. The formation of the laity and the evangeliza-tion of professional and intellectual life represent a signif-icant pastoral challenge. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— When the Son of God be-came Incarnate, became ONE OF US it made every hu-man a brother and sister of Jesus and a son or daughter of God. That's why Jesus treated everyone with so much love and respect. Jesus saw himself in every leper, in eve-ry poor person, in every slave. Everyone is equal in the sight of God. Try and imagine how unsettling that was in a society that treated ordinary people as mere chattels. The Mission of the Apostles was to spread that ''Good News'' throughout the whole world. But over the centu-ries the message was so successful that the People and Families of God moved from their homes and family based churches into great basilicas and a gap appeared between the people and the clergy who were ordained to serve them. The clergy became the chosen ones. The peo-ple became the sinners knocking on the doors or cowering in the pews hoping for crumbs from the Altar and in many, many cases not receiving them for they were deemed unworthy. The Lay People were no longer bear-ers of the GOOD NEWS. They had become sinful beg-gars. We saw that Pope Francis trying to bridge that chasm in his recent visit, but the very adulation that greet-ed him from all sides also emphasized our need. Our im-mediate challenge is to help everyone , 'the laity' to be-lieve and be empowered that we are all Apostles on the Mission.
