Your generosity of time, talents and resources have given women and children the chance to break the cycles of pain and poverty and grow in healthy life fulfilling ways. Your support during the fiscal year 2015-2016 brought dreams of self-sufficiency to reality, healed the visible and invisible wounds of trauma, and gave mothers and children the chance to create healthy family bonds.

Fiscal year 2016 included partnering with Early Head Start to open our 5 star licensed childcare center in a temporary location as we await the completion of our new permanent space. This space allows a central location for children to receive the needed screenings, assessments and interventions they need to thrive. Mothers feel secure in knowing their children are cared for by a high-quality team that has empathy and compassion for them and their children. Thanks to your support ground was broken and bricks and mortar are the tangible materials that give life to our dream of a permanent home for Horizons.

As I read the daily news headlines, it is clear that Horizons is helping to fill an ever increasing void across North Carolina. Every day thousands of North Carolina citizens are suffering with opioid addiction and need help. In fact, four of the top 25 cities in the USA for opioid abuse are in North Carolina. We need your help to provide life-saving treatment to more women and their children across our beautiful state. We invite you to join our circle to help women and children transform from surviving to thriving. We welcome you to visit our program to experience firsthand the healing and hope of our circle of community.

WHAT A TRANSFORMATIONAL YEAR IT HAS BEEN FOR HORIZONS - THANKS TO YOU!

In years past, we have referred to our donors as our Circle of Hope. Certainly, Horizons would not have seen such tremendous growth and incredible opportunities without generous support. Yet as I look back on the past year of bringing healing to women and children, there are so many Circles of Hope that make up the Horizons story.

Our new home at Shelton Station would not have been possible without support from close circles of friends and family. Our circles have been our champions in the community, and there to provide hope when the work was most challenging. The new space will include more meeting areas, where women in the program will circle together to create small intimate groups of support. At the same time, their children can explore circles, squares, even triangles as they play and learn in the new, state-of-the-art child development center onsite. The Horizons model of gender and trauma-responsive care helps women and their children break free from the circles of poverty, abuse and addiction, and build new lives together.

All of these circles loop together to create a system of hope for the women in our Horizons program, and the many more we hope to touch as we continue to widen our circle of care. Thank you for being in our circle, and for being a beacon of hope to women and children.

HORIZON

SHELTON STATIONAfter years of planning and dreaming, and with your faith and generous support, we broke ground on our new home in March 2016. Shelton Station, which should be completed by the end of 2016, will bring many benefits to the women and children of Horizons, including:

• Three large group rooms for treatment programming, equipped with removable partitions which allow the rooms to become one large space for graduations, holiday celebrations, conferences and other events

• A dedicated maternal/child therapy space equipped with a 2 way mirror for observation and teaching

• A clinic to give our Nurse Practitioner the ability to provide select services and triage health issues onsite

• A test kitchen for staff members and volunteers to use to engage women and children in learning to create healthy meals

• Five classrooms for the Horizons Child Development Center, giving us the ability to serve 40 children between 6 weeks and 5 years of age

• A beautiful playground and outdoor space for the children with natural features such as raised garden beds to provide opportunities to explore

• A walk-in donations room where women can select clothing and shoes for themselves and their children, and goods to help nurture the home environment

I HAD BEEN TO A LOT OF OTHER PROGRAMS BEFORE I GOT TO HORIZONS. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HORIZONS AND OTHER PROGRAMS IS THAT HORIZONS DOES NOT BEAT YOU DOWN BEFORE THEY BUILD YOU UP. HORIZONS SEES THE GOOD IN YOU AND USES YOUR STRENGTHS TO HELP. OTHER PROGRAMS ONLY TEACH YOU HOW TO STOP USING DRUGS. HORIZONS TEACHES YOU HOW TO BE A PARENT AND LIVE A FULL LIFE WITHOUT DRUGS.

THEY TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON NOT JUST THE ADDICTION.

You are our Circle of HopeYour commitment to Horizons this year has brought hope to women and their children every day. Each year, we are overwhelmed by the generosity and support of individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations. This year we have so much to be thankful for, and have received generous support from so many friends of Horizons. Through their generosity, the following individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations supported a broad range of programs and activities by making a gift between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: ASHLEY LEFLER WILSONWhat do you enjoy about your volunteer time at Horizons? The people! I love getting to know the women in recovery, watching them as they progress through the levels of the program, gaining confidence and inner peace. I also love getting to know the staff at Horizons. Each one is compassionate, professional and dedicated to the program. The joy they bring to, and get from, their work is palpable.

What do you think are the most important or powerful things that Horizons does for North Carolina women and their children ? UNC Horizons treats the women and children in the program with dignity and respect. The focus on trauma-informed care creates an environment where true healing can take place. The program encourages the women to dig deep to uncover and understand the roots of their addiction in order to truly recover and build new, healthy lives for themselves and their children. What would you tell people about Horizons?I tell people that UNC Horizons is an incredible place of hope and healing. We should support it with financial or in-kind contributions. Every day, lives are saved and improved at Horizons. We are lucky to have this program in our state.

HORIZONS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

We shared our story with a national audience on the PBS Newshour in January.

We testified before US congressional leaders about the opioid epidemic and UNC Horizons’ model as one solution to the crisis.

We wrote a section of the new United Nations standards for treatment of substance use disorders pertaining to women and infants.

We shared our knowledge with learners and treatment providers from across the US and

around the world who are interested in replicating the Horizons model.
