Our brother in racing Walt Huber offered the

following insight:

Hey Folks,

Just did a little exercise after pulling a copy of

the Devil i/t Dark results off the NESCCA site.

I added up all the laps credited to all the cars --

and the result is 11,237 total laps.

Now, if you take the number of laps and

multiply that by the length of the track (2.25

miles), you come up with 25,283! miles.

Interesting number, ain't it?

Remember?... Back in school?... Your

geography teacher telling you the earth was

around 25,000 miles in circumference? Well

Wikipedia says the earth is actually 24,901"

miles around at the equator. So...

Holy Crap!! -- our race cars last Saturday

circled the earth -- and then some!!

Fan-freakin'-tastic! Great job Everyone!

Best,

Walter

What a great way to describe a great event.

The second annual Devil In The Dark 12 Hour

endurance race was amazing. NJMP went all

out and our SCCA regions did their normal

remarkable job running it.

I’ll wager we have nearly 50 cars next year and

a lot more spectators. NJMP made it so much

fun for everyone – bands, professional track

announcing for the whole 12 hours keeping

everyone abreast of the activity on track and in

the pits, great victory celebration, fun stuff for

the kids, ice sculpture, haunted hay rides,

mammoth screen x-Box racing competition,

even comfy chairs in a hospitality lounge in the

garage featuring a full catered buffet, bar, and

beer pong.

Heck, a couple amusement park rides and we’ll

be right up there with LeMans.

The Johnstone Racing overall winners were so

gracious in victory and appreciative of all the

effort NJMP and the SCCA put into the event to

make it special for everyone. Well done all.

And deserving victors too. Consider this – after

12 hours of racing, 25 cars finished within 10%

of the winners overall laps. 12 grueling hours.

And 25 cars finishing well and truly on the

pointy end of the stick. What a race.

To quote Walt: “fan=freakin’-tastic” indeed!

Tom Smith

being careful to find the correct location. Trophies will be presented in the manner described in the Standard General Instructions. SCCA points will be by separate

classes. Year End Awards will be presented in the three Course rally classes and the four Touring Rally

Classes. Special Awards Form your own competition group such as Best Chevy Entrant, Best John’s Sunoco Employee, Best Friends, Best NE Rally Club Member, Best Smith Family Member, or any common bond that you have. nnjr.org Subject: Great 12 Hour

Hello All,

Well I hope everyone has recovered from the 12

Hour. I just wanted to shout out to everyone with a

thank you for all the hard work that was put in on

this one. Not only did you work hard but you did a

great, great, great job.

Also, if there is every any doubt that all the late

night RPC meetings, all the heavy lifting, all the

hours spent in planning and running the events are

not really worth it, please just read the e-mail

below that was sent to Val, Terry and Don

Faurerbach at NJMP. Read the whole thing, it is

worth it. Coming from someone with Charlie

Greenhouse’s experience, this is not faint praise.

See you soon and thanks again.

Brian

All, I would like to thank the Jersey Racing Board

and NJMP for hosting an EXCELLENT event this past

weekend. In returning to SCCA racing with our

team last year after a long absence, we found your

region(s) to be very accommodating and

welcoming. I would like to specifically thank the

following folks in no particular order: Val Heun,

who is the best SCCA registrar (by far) that I have

encountered in my 20+ years of motorsports.

Thanks for being so accommodating and working

with our team to make registration seamless and as

little aggravation as possible. Your cheer and

cooperative efforts make my customers feel

welcome and in turn make us look good for

choosing your event. Terry Hanushek, for helping

us formalize Sports R as a class and working with

us to launch what I hope will become a long and

successful relationship between Entropy and the

Region(s). your chief of tech (who's name escapes

me right now) for being professional, helpful and

cooperative on all fronts. He makes you feel like

tech is actually a service rather than a chore to be

endured. I wanted to say that the Jersey Racing

Board is doing a nice job towards the goal of

creating the SCCA as an approachable, accessible

and enjoyable place to race. You ran a great event,

and should be commended for your efforts thanks

from all of us at Entropy Racing Sincerely, Charlie

Greenhaus PS, Please forward to any (or ALL) of

the folks that made the last 2 "Devils" possible. we

will be back!

We rock. We’re on YouTube baby.

Have you seen the most viral web 2.0 sticky video

on the Internet ever created? You know, the one

in the news lately that everyone’s talking about

with nearly hundreds of millions of views (well, OK,

just 60 views as I write this, but that’s like a rocket

before launch …)

Yeah, we’re on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEgbaQbECG0

or search with SCCASJR or South Jersey Region

SCCA while in YouTube for the video.

Motorsports has a lot to offer, and in saying that to

you as active members I’m preaching to the choir.

We’ve nearly doubled our South Jersey Region

membership in the last few years through the

strength of our programs and the blessing of New

Jersey Motorsports Park (www.njmp.com) in our

backyard.

But that’s not enough. There are so many car

enthusiasts and racing fans and sports aficionados

out there who are not involved or who have no idea

who we are, and we need them --- NJMP needs

them as customers, we need them as members and

entrants and volunteers.

The YouTube video and TV advertising we’ll be

doing with it is one step.

We’ll also be printing cards that you can use to help

us by leaving them at places you frequent where

motorsports enthusiasts go --- auto parts stores,

repair shops, even your favorite diner or deli. The

cards contain a calendar of our events at NJMP,

which is a great way to get folks interested in all

that the SCCA has to offer.

I’m member number 161521, I’m proud to know

members low down in the four digits, and I’m proud

to have brought in members hundreds of thousands

later than mine.

What we all share is that badge of honor, an SCCA

membership, a privilege, not a right.

And the endorsements we have on that

membership --- the credentials we hold --- are

earned, not given.

Pass the word. Come on down to the SCCA

National at NJMP the first weekend of June to join in

the fun and while there pick up a stack of cards to

hand out

We’re Handsome on Video too

The Test Days You’ve Always Wished For

Joe Volpe, Director of Motorsports Activities at New Jersey Motorsports Park, has announced NJMP’s

new ‘Days of Thunder’ test days. Originally conceived of for closed-wheel cars with an open track

format, they will now include open-wheel car sessions too! It promises to be a lot of track time. Check

out the available dates above, and contact Joe Volpe for more information or to enter. There really isn’t

more bang for the buck out there in terms of track time for the money, and both Thunderbolt and

Lightning are a perfect way to spend a day with your race car.

Test and tune, get that extra seat time to practice technique or improve your line, or just smile

spending some extra hours on the track in a low-key environment.

We’re very fortunate to have a world-class facility right here in South Jersey with two unique and

exceptional tracks to enjoy. These are opportunities to enjoy our cars and driving that we simply did

not have before.

So support NJMP and enjoy these opportunities, and be sure to say Hi to Joe and all the staff at NJMP

thanking them for creating and running a Disneyland for car buffs right here in South Jersey.

Interestingly, the 2011 event saw a few more frustrating mechanical failures for teams than the 2010

event, which was run in June under conditions just a tick cooler than the surface of the sun, but a lot of

cars completed a lot of laps and 25 cars made it to the checkered flag! Well done. Your humble scribe

and the mighty Scuderia Zissou Dopplo Rosso team had an embarrassing failure occur just over one

hour into the race when a coolant hose broke (one of the few parts not replaced before the race), and

then a complete and thorough transmission failure at about 7:15pm (the other part we thought about

replacing before the event but did not), giving us time to walk around and enjoy some of the sights and

sounds of this festival-like event that NJMP and the SCCA have created for us.

Ridgespeed Racing Teammates Matt Rooke and John Hainsworth preparing for the ProIT race at

Pocono.

May 7th and 8th saw the return of the Mother’s Day weekend Double Regional to Pocono. The

event was dubbed the Joe DeLuca and Linda Gronlund Freedom Races to honor the lives and

memory of two Northern New Jersey Region SCCA members who died on September 11th 2001

bravely taking out the al-Qaeda terrorist hijackers on Flight 93, which was crashed outside of

Pittsburgh preventing almost certain destruction to Washington DC. The timing of this event was

particularly poignant given the recent events in Pakistan in finding bin Laden and dispensing

justice.

Our region had a few drivers taking part in the event, in addition to numerous race officials and

volunteers. Frank Sanchez had a tough weekend after qualifying 2nd in SPU but ultimately not

finishing any of the races. It was great to see Frank and Tina, as always, and I for one always

enjoy getting their perspective and experience on a host of issues. We’re lucky to have such

consummate pro’s and passionate racers in our midst. Brothers Mike and Steve Thomas brought

their Spec Racer Fords out with Steve taking a pair of 4ths and Mike bringing home a 5th and a 6th

in this highly competitive Spec class. And finally, our John Hainsworth drove to a great 4th in ITS

/ 5th overall in the ProIT race, which started off dry but had 20 minutes of heavy rain and slippery

conditions at the end of the race. All the competitors did a great job managing the difficult

changing condition, all running on dry tires in the rain, and John did a great job with an overall

Top 5 finish.

Upcoming Events at NJMP!

June 3-5 – Jersey Devil National and ProIT

We’ll be running our National and ProIT on NJMP’s

Thunderbolt circuit the first weekend of June with a

test day June 3rd, two sets of qualifying sessions for

the National drivers on Saturday, ProIT qualifying

on Sunday morning, and the slate of National races

and ProIT race during the day Sunday.

This is a great event and I encourage everyone to

come out, whether as an entrant, to help out in one

of the specialties, or just to support the region and

the track spectating and enjoying the racing.

In particular, I’d like to encourage some of our folks

who run in Regional classes like Club Ford or IT to

come and run the National in their respective

National counterparts like Formula Ford and STU.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not making a bid for the

RunOffs this year – why pass up an opportunity to

go out and have fun on Thunderbolt? Let’s make

this a BIG entry and show that, at least in New

Jersey, Nationals are well-subscribed and successful

weekends.

I for one am really looking forward to this weekend.

Despite having had terrible results in the two prior

Nationals (2009 was a DNF and 2010 was a DNS),

I’ll be bringing a new (to me) and freshly prepared

Formula Continental to debut in the National, and to

support our event I’ll also be entered in the ProIT

race in an ITS car. 2 hours in the Enduro in April

just wasn’t enough – driving Thunderbolt is

addicting!

June 24-26 – Lightning Challenge and ProIT

Our very first NJMP event was the Lightning

Challenge in July 2008, so this year marks the

fourth annual Lightning Challenge (can you believe

it? 4th Annual already?!).

This is a favorite event for many and it should see

big fields again in 2011. If Thunderbolt is an

addicting challenge for drivers and teams, Lightning

is pure intoxicating fun. The blind and leaping

Turns 1 and 5, the neck-stretching Light Bulb – give

the guy who designed this place a pat on the back,

it is certainly no boring antiseptic modern-design

track, it’s old school bravado and courage on

Lightning.

There’s no excuse for missing this one. It’s going

to be a blast.

For both these events, please be sure to contact a

Specialty Chief or email [email protected] if

you can help out as a race official or volunteer.

There’s something for everyone, young or old,

physically demanding or relaxing, experienced or

new. Many hands lighten the load for all …

Also remember that NJMP will have the ARCA

Series stock cars on Thunderbolt on May 21-22,

including the RoadMods series in support. NJMP is

one of the few road courses ARCA has ever run,

and it is fun to watch the professional drivers who

specialize in oval tracks take to our road course.

And the RoadMods are a blast to see. Not only do

they only run ovals, a lot of these guys only run on

dirt ovals, so you can imagine how much fun it is to

watch them run a technically challenging and fun

road course. Don’t be surprised to see big plumes

of dust kicked up by cars off course in Turn 1 (and

elsewhere). Just figure that they’re cooling off their

tires …

And finally, an event not to be missed is the

Vintage Grand Prix / Family Festival / Blue

Angels Air Show over Memorial Day weekend.

Need an alignment by guys who love racing and autocrossing? It turns out that Mr. Tire by the

Moorestown Mall in Maple Shade NJ (9 Collins Road, Maple Shade 08052) is run by two great guys,

Ron Murphy and Richard Henry, who are members and welcome the unusual suspension alignment

needs of racers and autocrossers. Be sure to give them a call at 856 439 1050.

And don’t forget two huge supporters of our events. www.treadzone.com run by Joe Specht is there

even when no other tire truck is there to ensure we have tires and tire services at all our events.

And don’t forget Geoffrey Hall’s work http://hotlapphoto.zenfolio.com/ --- his gallery of pictures are

breath-taking, and he knows the people and competitors so well that he is uniquely able to catch

those special and most memorable moments. For instance, his shot of Sue King at the 12 hour

captures her love and dedication to SCCA racing perfectly, and his ’12:01’ checkered flag picture is a

wonderful bookend on the event.
