Frame of the work: CISVI ProjectFrame of the work: CISVI Project

• Cisvi project: • Spanish founded National Project (17 partners, 3 years, 7M€ funding) • aiming to satisfy needs of people with disabilities and their communities using ICT and SSRI methodology.

• Common phases in research projects: user requirements, design and development (User Centered Design), user validation, exploitation plan, dissemination

• SSRI (Social Spaces for Research & Innovation): Ecosystems where people needs drive research and innovation activities framed by those communities that will clearly benefit from SSRI

SSRI (Social Spaces for Research & Innovation)SSRI (Social Spaces for Research & Innovation)

• Five key pillars of SSRI should be represented and well balanced• User and their social community participate in the whole sustainable development of solutions through-out all the life time

i. Definition of the situation to improve / problems to solve (co-definition)

ii. Design of the solution (co –design)

iii. Development of the solution (co-creation)

iv. Evaluation and validation of the solution

• e-inclusion SRRI to facilitate work-integration of people with disabilities (PRODIS Association in Madrid)

• e-health SRRI in the support of domiciliary care of elderly and chronic illness (Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid)

• e-inclusion SSRI to provide rural access to public administration and services (village of ABLA in Malaga)

• e-inclusion SSRI to empower independent living of cognitive disabled people (ATADES association in Zaragoza)

ATADES’s SSRI for independent livingATADES’s SSRI for independent living

• Main actors involved:o ATADES as final user (people with disabilities, educators , families, voluntaries, etc.)o Zaragoza Ciudad del Conocimiento Foundation as promoter (representing the municipality )o University of Zaragoza as scientific and technological coordinatoro Rest of project consortium (universities and companies) providing methodology support, technology development, etc.

• Specific innovation methodology:o Short innovation periods (6 months) to design, develop and evaluate solutionso Results from each cycle drive following cycleso All actors involved in each cycle

ObjectivesObjectives

• Main objective: provide people with cognitive disability a higher level of autonomy, enhanced security and improvement of their quality of life through the use of new technologies. • Areas of action:

o Support in activities of daily living (ADL) by means of context information and e-learning systems. o Promotion of an open community in which users (families, carers, educators, etc.) create and share educational content for learning activities of daily living.o Support user cognitive training through entertainment activities such as memory and reasoning games. o Enhance user safety by personal monitoring of unusual behaviors, lack of activity, etc. and by ambient monitoring such as fire warnings, “fridge door oversight” warnings, etc.o Accesible communication through adapted teleconference

First innovation periodFirst innovation period

• Objective: Proof of concept - Is ICT-based material suitable for learning activities of daily living?

• Actors involved:o 3 educators with various years of experienceo 6 end users with mild cognitive disability and moderate autonomy living in residence or with their familieso 3 technologists and 1 methodology coordinator

• Physical scenario: Training flat in ATADES school

First innovation period – design phaseFirst innovation period – design phase

“Wash your hands” adapt the methodology already used by educators to teach basic activities of daily living to the new technological support:

o Simple and sequential steps of ADL development o Different formats for the content including adapted text and audio with verbalizations, graphical information with video and images with adapted pictogramso Browsing support based on e-learning platform with multiple browsing interfaces such as touch screen, adapted mouse, switches, etc.

Page 12: CISVI: Espacio Social Innovacion de Zaragoza (25.01.2010)

First innovation period – development phaseFirst innovation period – development phase

• Structure of the activity into simple steps was done by educators• Time of completion specific to each user, was estimated based on the evidence of end users performing the ADL• Creation of the contents for the platform was done by the end users and educators taking photographs, recording audio and video about each step and creating necessary pictograms.• Integration of the content created was done by IT technicians in the e-learning platformfollowing the standards for universal design, accessibility and usability in web pages

Page 13: CISVI: Espacio Social Innovacion de Zaragoza (25.01.2010)

First innovation period resultsFirst innovation period results

Six users tried the technology whenever they needed to wash their hands during various days and…• Users paid attention to the system. • In most cases the execution times of a particular step were reduced and better executed. Sometimes even quicker than a person without disabilities.• Many of users could not learn the text within the unit of work. Nevertheless this changed when using pictograms instead.• The impulsivity of some users was reduced conditioning their response to the corresponding information from the system.• Acceptance and dexterity in the use of the technology (touch pad, navigation, etc.) was increased.

Successful proof of concept

Second innovation period - ongoingSecond innovation period - ongoing

• Objective: assure self-sustainability – incorporate solution in ATADES’s structure

o Educators develop contents and include them into the e-learning platform More contents for more userso Automatic evaluation of how the user uses the system and his/her performance o Search for local and regional synergies (political actors, other associations, etc.)o Diffusion of the work o Prepare technical development for next period:

o More intuitive user interfaces o Integration of teleconference

Page 15: CISVI: Espacio Social Innovacion de Zaragoza (25.01.2010)

ConclusionsConclusions

• Social Spaces for Research and Innovation methodology facilitates impact and satisfaction in end users

• From ATADES’ SSRI first iteration:o users responded satisfactorily to the technology o even generates a motivational factor that contributes to the acquisition of new knowledge and skills. o users learn the interface and get used to it, know how it works and learn the steps to carry out the ADL o users are motivated to continue learning using this technology in order to enhance their autonomy.
