MIAMI MARLINS (61-83) RHP Tom Koehler (9-13, 3.99) at NEW YORK METS (83-61) RHP Jacob deGrom (13-7, 2.40) CITI FIELD, FLUSHING, NY Tuesday, September 15, 2015 – 7:10 P.M. FISH BITES Miami and New York meet in game two of this three-game set tonight at Citi Field (7:10 p.m.). The Marlins will hand the ball to right-hander Tom Koehler; he is 1-5 with a 4.33 ERA in 13 career starts (16 appearances) against the Mets. New York will go with right-hander Jacob deGrom, who is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in six career starts against the Fish. Miami is coming off a 6-3 homestand, on which it earned 2-1 series wins over the Mets, Milwaukee, and Washington. The Fish also visit the Nationals (September 17-20) on this excursion. VS. THE METS The Marlins have two games left with the Mets this season, and need wins in both in order to win their fifth straight series overall, dating back to a three-game sweep of Atlanta from August 31-September 2. The Fish have gone 6-11 against the Metropolitans in 2015, which included Miami taking two of three in the last meeting, Sept. 4-6, at Marlins Park. The Marlins have gone 2-6 at Citi Field this season, and have gone 26-36 at the venue since its opening in 2009. The Fish are 84-103 overall in New York, and also trail the all-time series, 178-196. LAST NIGHT The Marlins were unable to hold a 3-1 lead, as the Mets rallied for three late runs to earn a 4-3 win at Citi Field. Miami faced the first deficit of the game, falling behind, 1-0, in the third. The Fish tied it in the fifth on a bases-loaded ground out by Miguel Rojas. They took a lead in the sixth on RBI singles by Derek Dietrich and J.T. Realmuto. The Mets tied it with two in the bottom of the frame, and scored the game-winner in the seventh. ROOKIE CATCHING ON J.T. Realmuto went 2x4 last night, setting a new career high by extending his current hitting streak to 10 games. According to Stats LLC, Realmuto’s streak is tied for the longest by a catcher in Club history (see full list at right). Realmuto and Charles Johnson (1995) are the only rookies on that list. Should Realmuto surpass Johnson, it would not be the first time he has rewritten the Club annals for rookie catchers this season. He has already set new marks for games played (105), runs scored (44), hits (98), doubles (18), triples (6), and RBI (43), all of which were records previously held by Johnson. Realmuto’s nine home runs are just two shy of tying CJ, and his .253 (98x387) average would trump Johnson’s record (.251/79x315). BITING THE BIG APPLE Dee Gordon extended his hitting streak against the Mets to 15 games last night. He is batting .438 (28x64) over that stretch, which is the longest active hitting streak in the Majors vs. New York. It is also Gordon’s longest hitting streak against an opponent in his career, ahead of a 13-game run against Atlanta (August 13, 2014 to Aug. 7, 2015) and nine-game runs against Arizona (Sept. 13, 2011 to May 23, 2012) and Washington (Sept. 2, 2014 to July 28, 2015). STRONG SHOWING DOWN THE BACK STRETCH The Marlins are off to an 8-4 start in September, their best opening to a month this season. Miami’s .276 team average this month ranks fourth in the National League, behind only Milwaukee (.297), the Mets (.288), and Washington (.288). The Club’s 3.55 team ERA ranks fourth, behind the Cubs (3.24), San Francisco (3.24), and the Dodgers (3.47). Miami’s current ERA would rank as the fourth-best for September in Club history, behind a 2.86 mark in 1996, a 3.20 in 2011, and a 3.54 in 2013. - Stats LLC THE GOLD STANDARD With defensive metrics now a component of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award®, the Marlins have two of the highest rat- ed position players not just in the National League, but in MLB. In terms of DEF (defensive runs above average), Adeiny Hechavarria (21.1) leads all National League position players and ranks second in the Majors to only Kevin Kiermaier (28.1). Hechavarria leads all NL shortstops in UZR (ultimate zone rating) at 15.4, ahead of Andrelton Simmons (14.5), Nick Ahmed (10.4) and Brandon Crawford (10.4). Dee Gordon, his partner up the middle, leads NL second basemen in DEF (8.4), UZR (6.5) and DRS (10). Also, third baseman Martin Prado leads all NL third basemen in fielding percentage (.973), committing just seven errors (second-fewest, min. 90 G) in 258 total chances. - Fangraphs DISPATCHES FROM THE BULLPEN A.J. Ramos picked up his fourth save in as many games Saturday night. He became the sixth pitcher (eighth time) in Club history to accomplish the feat, the first since Kevin Gregg (July 9-12, 2008)... Kyle Barraclough has allowed just two earned runs in 18.2 innings over 18 appearances since making his MLB debut on August 7. In that time, he leads all Major League relievers (min. 18 G) in average against (.107) and strikeouts (26), and is fourth in ERA (0.96)...Mike Dunn earned his 20 th relief win in a Marlins’ uniform on Friday night, becoming the Franchise’s career leader in wins as a reliever. BACK ON TRACK The Marlins had a spate of eight errors in a four-game span from August 18-21, dropping the Club’s overall fielding percentage from .987, which ranked fourth in the NL, to .985, which ranked seventh. Since August 22, however, they have committed just four errors, the fewest in the Majors, and posted a .995 fielding percentage, which leads the Majors. Their overall fielding percentage for the season is back up to .987, which ranks fourth in the NL, behind the Dodgers (.988), San Francisco (.988), and Arizona (.987). SWIPE RIGHT Dee Gordon stole his 51 st base of the season last night, tying Hanley Ramirez (2006 & 2007) for the sixth-most in a season in Club history. Juan Pierre (2003) tops that list at 65, followed by Luis Castillo (62 in 2000), Chuck Carr (58 in 1993), Pierre (57 in 2005), and Quilvio Veras (56 in 1995). Gordon ranks second in the Majors this season, behind Billy Hamilton (56). MARLINS VS.
