AVIDCHS is proud to offer AVID to students in grades 10 and 11 this year, and for grades 9-12 for the 2017-18 school year. AVID is a national college readiness program in schools all over the United States whose mission is to prepare students for college and success in a global society. The AVID elective at CHS supports students so that they can excel in advanced level classes, facilitates the college application process, and gives students a set of study skills so that they enter college more prepared for the rigors of higher education.

Graduates of the AVID program accepted & enroll in college at higher than average rates, re-ceive more scholarship dollars than the average student, and take AP classes and exams at higher than average rates.

COUNSELING OFFICE INFORMATION

FINANCIAL AID FOR POST HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION

If you missed the financial aid evening in September, you can access a power point on Naviance in the Document Library under “Important College Information” on the home page. If you haven't already, NOW is the time to file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

FORECASTING FOR NEXT YEAR

The annual CHS showcase will be Tuesday, February 21, 6:00-8:00 PM and visits to 8th grade classes to present forecasting information will take place March 2-3. Counselors will return to the middle schools March 10-13 to assist students in entering forecasting on-line. Counselors will visit English classroom at CHS to distribute forecasting materials to 9th and 10th graders on February 22-23 and return February 27- 28 to help them finish the on-line forecasting process. It is very important that your student be in English during these dates. Juniors will receive forecasting information in US History classes March 16-17. Each junior will be given an appointment to meet in small groups with his/her counselor prior to selecting classes for the senior year. At this meeting, students can discuss post high school plans as well as senior curriculum choices. Junior appointments will take place March 21-23. This year, all students will be entering forecasting data on line.

CREDIT RECOVERY OPPORTUNITIES

We have limited space available in our on-campus credit recovery classes to juniors and seniors who failed core classes first semester. Students who need to recover credit for graduation need to see their counselors. Clackamas Community College and Mt. Hood Community College offer credit recovery opportunities as well. Students planning to attend 4 year colleges or who are wanting to meet NCAA standards are advised that credit recovery opportunities are not acceptable for those purposes.

NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK

National School Counseling Week sponsored by the American School Counselor Association will be celebrated February 6-10 to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors. Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in counseling. High school counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities,

strengths, interests, and talents; in working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; in focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ social/personal, educational and career development; and in working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. If you haven’t met your student’s counselor and/or don’t know what counselors do, we invite you to visit us. Please call 503-353-5811 to talk with your student’s counselor.

Clackamas High President’s Day Youth Hitting Clinics

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2017

GRADES 1st-8th

Grades 1-3 = 9:30am – 11:00amGrades 4-6 = 11:15am – 12:45pmGrades 7-8 = 1:00pm – 2:30pm

Each clinic will be limited to 20 players! The first 20 registrations received for each grade level will be enrolled in each clinic, so sign up quickly!Cost = $35.00

All clinics will be in the Clackamas Baseball Indoor Hitting Facility (The Big House)

The Clackamas High President’s Day Youth Hitting Clinics are designed to teach younger players the basic skills and philosophies of hitting. We will focus on developing sound hitting techniques and using the proper drills. We also will stress the appropriate mental approach to hitting. Our goal is to give each athlete a better understanding and knowledge of what it takes to be a successful hitter.

Due to space and safety concerns, each clinic is limited to 20 players. This will also insure a 1-4 player to coach ratio. This will allow each player to get a lot of individualized instruction from members of our high school staff. The clinics are run solely by the high school coaching staff.

Each clinic is an hour and a half long and broken up by grades. This will allow us to make sure our instruction is very age and skill specific. The clinics will be held entirely in the Clackamas Baseball indoor hitting facility (The Big House).

INSURANCE WAIVER

I understand that the Clackamas Baseball staff will use their judgment in determining emergency care and procedures. I also understand that the North Clackamas School District, the Clackamas Baseball program, or Clackamas Baseball Coaching staff, assume no financial obligation for expenses incurred in carrying out emergency procedures and/or emergency transportation.

A Piece of My HeartThis is a powerful, true drama of six young women who went to Vietnam: five nurses and a country western singer booked by an unscrupulous agent to entertain the troops. The play portrays each young woman before, during and after her tour in the war-torn jungle and ends as each leaves a personal token at The Wall in Washington.

A Piece of My Heart has recently been named the “The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation,” by The Vietnam Vets Association. The New York Times commented, “There have been a number of plays deal-ing with Vietnam, but none with the direct, emotional impact of Ms. Lauro’s work.

Parental AdvisoryA Piece of My Heart is a true story depicting the tragedy of war. This play includes adult content, language, and descriptions of violence.

Announcement of 2017-18 National High School Policy Debate Topic

Clackamas High School’s English and Speech teacher, Jennifer Lesieur has the honor of having her topic, Ed-ucation Reform, chosen as the 2017-18 National High School Policy Debate Topic. According to Mr. Streeter, former speech coach at CHS, “For those of you that are unfamiliar with the process of selecting the National Policy Debate Topic, it is quite arduous and a tremendous honor. This brings much prestige to CHS and the District. There is only one topic selected each year nationally. All high school policy debaters across the country will debate this topic throughout next year culminating in each state championship and the Nation-al Championship. Fewer than 100 people hold this honor since the National Forensic League was founded in 1925.” Congratulations Ms. Lesieur!

SPED Teacher Awarded Grant MoneyBefore coming to CHS to teach in the SPED Dept, Janet Tansy taught art for many years. When she heard about the NCEF teacher grants she applied with the goal of bringing art into her classes. She wrote out her proposal, and is so grateful to have been awarded the money to purchase art supplies for her students.

Ms. Tansy says, “Sometimes the best way forward is to step outside of left brain operations and try some-thing different, to explore unfamiliar aspects of yourself. It is often a positive, rewarding experience.

Many of our students do not get the chance to simply explore their creative sides as they are so focused throughout elementary and middle grades on grade-level goals and benchmarks. I hope to provide my stu-dents with opportunities to experience another aspect of learning.” Congratulations Ms. Tansy!

Childrens Book ProjectA diverse and creative group of students at Clackamas High School are writing and illus-trating original picture books, based on their own experiences, to help elementary school kids deal with difficult issues such as divorce, race, body image, bullying, conflicting reli-gious beliefs, gender identity and others. They also attended a lesson from Happy Valley librarian Anna Bruce about bibliotherapy and the power children’s books can have on children. With a generous grant from the North Clackamas Education Foundation, the students will eventually print and read their picture books in actual elementary school classrooms across the district.

Group advisors: Clackamas teachers and staff Kellette Elliott, John Stewart, Laurie Thurston, and Shalaia Walters

Student Travel to Costa Rica in JuneCHS students are invited to travel this June to Costa Rica with Ms. Leger from the World Language Depart-ment! With well-protected national reserves and an unparalleled diversity of wildlife, Costa Rica is the jewel of Central America. We will travel to multiple regions. The Arenal region showcases an active volcano, hot springs, and a broad range of flora and fauna. In Monteverde, tour the greenery of the Santa Elena Cloud Forest, then in Manuel Antonio National Park, keep your eyes open for sloth, toucans, and howler monkeys. We will have a great time, so please join us! For more information email: [email protected].

The next informational meeting is February 15th in East Campus room B6 at 6:30pm.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!Did you know that the drinking water in Clackamas County is not fluoridated? Because of this, students who live in Clackamas County are at greater risk for tooth decay (cavities). North Clackamas School District provides a number of opportunities to help students prevent tooth decay and maintain good oral health.

Our district’s oral health program has received a multi-year Oregon Community Foundation Children’s Dental Health Initia-tive grant to develop a district-wide school-based dental program that will eventually provide dental services for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Our district is partnering with Neighborhood Health Center (NHC) to develop this oral health program.

Our dental wellness coordinator and NHC’s Community Dental Program staff help families access dental care for their children. Having these services at our schools means students spend less time out of class and parents miss less work. Several opportuni-ties for students are shown below.

Dental insurance navigation and application assistance is available.

Mobile van visits may be scheduled to provide services for students who do not have dental insurance or access to dental care.

MODA’s The Children’s Program can provide up to $600 of free dental services for children from ages 5 to 18 who are not covered under any dental plan.

Please contact the NCSD Oral Health Program at 503-353-6096 for information about these and other services. You can also view their website. From the North Clackamas School District homepage (www.nclack.k12.or.us) under Departments, choose Family Support Center, and select Dental Health Solutions.

Dear Parents and Guardians

In order to comply with state law (SB 637) North Clackamas School District is required to send an annual notification to inform you about the school district’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. The dis-trict’s operations department will need to facilitate the treatment of pests and weeds at some point during the school year with low impact applications.

When pest (ants, wasps, mice, hazardous weeds, etc.) thresholds exceed the established limits and non chemical pest control measures are deemed unsuccessful, low impact pesticide applications will be con-sidered and or applied as a last measure. Under SB-637; only license pesticide/herbicide applicators are permitted to perform this work in and around schools. The routine use of pesticides to remedy pests is not allowed. Prior to treatment, we are required to post notice of planned treatments 24 hours in advance, and to leave the notice up until 48 hours after a pesticide is applied on site. If pest conditions dictate immediate atten-tion the 24 hour notification will be waived and the posting will take place at the time of application. Pes-ticide notifications will be posted at the schools’ main entrance or office doors and also at the area being treated inside the school or school grounds.

Please direct all questions and inquiries regarding IPM to Melinda Shumaker, Facility Operations Director, at (503) 353-6061.
