NYSDOT TO HOST PUBLIC OPEN HOUSES FOR BRIDGE PROJECT

REXFORD - Work Proposed for the Rexford Bridge on Route 146 in Niskayuna and Clifton Park. The New York State De-partment of Transportation (NYSDOT) will host two public open houses regarding a proposed project to make improve-ments to the Rexford Bridge on State Route 146 and at the intersections of Route 146 with Aqueduct Road/Williams Road in the Town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County and the intersection with Riverview Road/Alplaus Road in the Town of Clifton Park, Saratoga County. The open houses will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Rexford Fire Station at 1601 Route 146 in Rexford (Clifton Park) and on January 30, 2014 starting at 7:00 p.m. at Niska-yuna Town Hall at 1 Niskayuna Circle in Niskayuna. The Nis-kayuna meeting will be a public hearing. A presentation on the project will be given at 7:00 p. m. followed by a time for public comments and questions. Staff from NYSDOT will be available to discuss the project in an informal environment before and after the presentation. Comments and input re-garding the project are welcome as part of NYSDOT’s con-tinual eff ort to encourage public participation in the devel-opment of transportation projects. The project proposes to replace the Rexford Bridge and provide improvements to the intersections. The current preferred alternative adds lanes to the intersections and provides a multi-use trail between the intersections. The traffi c signal at the Aqueduct Road inter-section is proposed to be replaced by a roundabout. There is currently no schedule for project construction. The Rexford Fire Station and Niskayuna Town Hall are accessible to peo-ple with disabilities. The Department of Transportation will provide interpretive aids or services if requested prior to the meeting. Anyone who has concerns or observations about this intersection project but who is unable to attend the open house may either contact Richard Filkins, Project Manager, at (518) 457-9756 or write to: Richard Filkins, Project Manager, NYS Department of Transportation, Region 1 Design, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12232.

Hi, I’m pretty Peanuts, a very sweet and social Momcat. I have a lovely orange coat with just the tiniest bit of white on my chest. My orange eyes

are beautiful. I am here with my baby Little Peanut. A while ago I was a pregnant stray, and some nice folks took me in so I could have a safe place to give birth. But they couldn’t keep us, so they brought us to the shelter.

I am a real love bug, and I give head butts and like to cuddle. A forever home is what I need now, and I will be a delightful addition to your family

because I am just a total sweetheart!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT WEDDING RECEPTION FAVORS

Planning a perfect wedding is no small undertaking. From scheduling venues and hiring ven-dors to tasting menus, lots of decisions must be made when planning a wedding. But when the pieces fall into place, the entire day can be magical.

One of the final components of wed-dings are the favors guests will take home with them as mementos of the festivities. Though favors don’t require immediate attention, that does not mean couples should wait until the last minute to made decisions regarding their wedding favors.

Brides- and grooms-to-be should not underestimate the importance of handing out wedding favors, a tradi-tion with a rich history. A wedding

favor is considered a symbol of good will to guests, and there are many different wedding favors on the market. Finding the right one can take a little work. It is usually a good idea to find something that suits the theme of the wedding and is both long-lasting and practical. Try

to avoid anything that is too kitschy.

A couple’s budget should be considered when choos-ing wedding favors. A couple may want to give their guests lavish gifts but should only do so if their budget allows. It may be challenging for couples to find favors that fit the theme of their wedding, as well as their own personalities and budgets. But it can be done. The following are some fa-vor-finding guidelines.

Be creative

Wedding favors can be just about anything, so there’s no need to stick to Jordan almonds or wine bottle stop-pers. The more creative cou-ples are, the more receptive their guests will likely be. For example, for an autumn-theme wedding, fill mason jars with the ingredients for a spiced cake and give the recipe directions on a tag. For a summer wedding, gift guests with a sun and surf survival bag, full of sunblock, a beach towel and sunglass-es.

Complete the theme

Some weddings follow a particular theme from start to finish, and wedding favors should stick with that theme. Couples who will showcase their love of travel on their wedding days may want to give guests keychains or purse holders that feature popular landmarks around the world. Those who are admitted beach bums may want to present a small fish-bowl with sand and a gold-fish inside, reminiscent of days at the seashore.

Go traditional

Couples who opt for universally appealing favors can lean toward some popular options, such as silver cake servers, candlestick holders, decorative photo frames, or engraved keepsake boxes. Aim for favors that have utility. Otherwise, favors may end up collecting dust on someone’s shelf.

Food and beverage gifts are fun

Food favors mean guests can enjoy their gifts and not have to worry about finding space inside their homes to display trinkets. Food favors can be lavishly decorated cookies, fine chocolates, petit fours, small bottles of champagne or cup-cakes decorated like the wedding cake.

Favors are often integral to wedding celebrations. Selecting a favor that will be appreciated and fit with the wedding is often a fun and stress-free part of planning a wedding.

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have got-ten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned in-come falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depend-ing on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to stu-dents as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on provid-ing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffi nsurance.com.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS LOOKING FOR MENTORS

Currently, we serve over 500 children, but there are over 100 more waiting for mentors. If you want to learn more about volunteering, contact Brigette Callahan at 862-1250 x15, or by email at [email protected].

Expires 2-28-14

In 2005 we were the fi rst in the area to bring you the Lastone Massage and now: BAMBOO-FUSION.

What may seem like a new technique, bamboo massage, has ancient roots. Today, bamboo massage is touted as Bamboo-Fusion but bamboo can be seen as much more than a new trend or accessory.

Bamboo-Fusion massage is a technique that incorporates bamboo heated stalks of varying lengths and diameters to provide deep-tissue work to promote lymphatic drainage into the technique. Stalks are usually heated and are incorporated into the massage. The massage itself promotes circulation, sensory nerve perception, a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.

One of the fi rst people to develop a bamboo massage technique was Natahlie Cecilia, a certifi ed Thai massage therapist from France. Several of our top massage therapists have trained exclusively with Nathalie Cecilia, the creator of Bamboo-Fusion and are ready to show you the many benefi ts of Bamboo-Fusion massage.
