HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT WEDDING VENDORS

Weddings are a careful bal-ance of many elements that culminate on one special day. Making all of the com-ponents of a wedding come together seemlessly requires a well organized bride and groom and the cooperation of professional wedding vendors who understand their unique roles.

Vendors, including fl orists, transportation companies, musicians, and dressmakers are essential to a successful wedding. Competent wed-ding vendors will remove much of the worry and work from a couple's shoulders.

But not every couple ends up with top-notch wedding vendors. Research, planning and verifying references are some ways to ensure your vendors make your wedding day that much more enjoy-able.

* Seek recommendations from trusted friends and family members. Talk to friends and family members whose insight you value about which wedding ven-dors they used. If you attend a wedding or another party and fi nd the fl owers or the music particularly well done, ask for the name of the fl o-rist or band. Word-of-mouth advertisement is a great way to fi nd quality wedding vendors who will help make your dream wedding a real-ity.

* Consult with a wedding planner. If budget allows, work with a wedding plan-ner. He or she will have an extensive list of wedding vendors you can contact. A wedding planner wants the job to get done right and ef-fi ciently, and many wedding planners have already vetted and verifi ed certain vendors as quality workers.

* Always ask for references and don't ignore them. Busy wedding vendors should provide you with a list of names of satisfi ed custom-ers. Talk with couples who used the vendors' services in the past and ask the questions that are most important to your decision-making process. Unbiased feedback also may be avail-able through online review

sites, but direct contact with references may make you feel more comfortable. If a vendor fails to provide refer-ences, this should raise sus-picions about the person's reliability.

* Deposits should be a frac-tion of the total price. Avoid wedding vendors who insist on hefty deposits. A deposit is a good-faith agreement to hold the date of the wed-ding, and it should be a small percentage of the overall cost of the services.

* Do not pay balances too far in advance. Many wed-ding vendors require the balance be paid on the day of the wedding or shortly before. Good vendors real-ize couples will not want to pay the tally until they have received the products or services they signed up for. A photographer may ask for the fi nal payment when albums are delivered. The exception may be a caterer or reception site that needs the funds to order food and beverages a few weeks in advance. Paying off a ven-dor too early means you run the risk of that vendor hav-ing your money and then not coming through on the wedding day. It's diffi cult to track down a person for a refund, plus you're left with fi nding a replacement at the last minute.

* Contracts are your friends. Every agreement should be

in writing. You have a bet-ter chance of fi ghting for a refund or restitution in court when you have a contract in writing.

* Consider wedding insur-ance. Even the best-laid plans can go awry on a wed-ding day. Anything from freak weather events to ill-ness to vendor absences can wreak havoc. The Better Business Bureau advises pur-chasing wedding insurance to protect yourself when weddings are especially costly. Such insurance may cover vendors who fail to show up, cancellations, in-clement weather, military deployment, medical emer-gencies, and travel delays. With wedding insurance, you won't lose money if plans change. A basic insur-ance policy that covers loss of photos, videos, attire,

presents, rings, and deposits usually costs between $155 and $550, depending on the amount of coverage you want.

Engaged couples can ask trusted friends and family members to recommend wedding vendors.

HONEYMOON PLANNING MADE EASY

Weddings are one-of-a-kind occasions. Weddings also tend to be stressful, even for the most laid-back people. But a honeymoon gives the couple a chance to enjoy uninterrupted mo-ments together and serves as a way to recuperate from the months and sometimes years of wedding planning.

Honeymoons are a beloved wedding tradition, and some couples even combine their weddings and honey-moons by opting for a des-tination wedding. Because the honeymoon should be a way to unwind on a dream vacation, booking the hon-eymoon and setting an itin-erary should not add to the pressure of planning, and the following tips should make planning a honey-moon a snap.

* Research your destination. Learn all you can about a destination before booking your honeymoon. Study the weather for the time of year

you will be on your honey-moon, and learn about cur-rency exchange, local rules and regulations and other pertinent factors to deter-mine the best places to visit. You do not want to be met with surprises that might compromise your trip upon arriving to your honeymoon destination.

* Book well in advance. The sooner you choose your des-tination, the faster you can begin the process of apply-ing for passports, visas or other necessary documents. Booking early also guaran-tees you better seats on the ight and the ability to ne-gotiate pricing.

* Give yourself a full day be-tween the wedding and em-barking on your trip. Scenes of couples being whisked away to the airport right af-ter the reception dwindles down are commonplace. But that doesn't mean you need to leave right after the nal dance. Allow some breath-ing room to pack, deposit wedding gifts, return tux-edoes, and tackle any other post-wedding tasks. Save

the romantic " rst night" as a couple for the honeymoon and enjoy a well-deserved night's sleep.

* Purchase travel insurance. One way to alleviate the stress of planning a wed-ding is to ensure your hon-eymoon investment is pro-tected in the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Travel insur-ance is a safety net that can come in handy. Speak with a travel agent or insurance agent about how to secure travel insurance for the hon-eymoon.

* Pack light. Don't burden yourself down with a lot of belongings. Chances are you'll pick up new things and mementos on the trip, and packing light makes tra-versing airports that much easier.

CLASSIC SONGS TO INCLUDE ON YOUR WEDDING

RECEPTION PLAYLIST

Felix Mendelssohn's "Wed-ding March" is popular at wedding ceremonies near and far, but many songs also enjoy such widespread popularity. Sentimental standards help shape the celebration. Unless a couple intends to buck all trends, the following are some popular wedding reception staples.

* "Unforgettable": Made popular in the early 1950s by Nat King Cole, "Unforget-table" experienced a resur-gence in popularity in the 1990s thanks to a remix of

the song that turned it into a duet between the late Cole and his daughter, Natalie.

* "Unchained Melody": The Righteous Brothers classic was a hit in 1965 but rose to even greater popularity when it was included in the 1990 lm "Ghost." Couples still love to cut a rug to this song at their wedding recep-tions.

* "The Way You Look To-night": This oft-covered song is one of the more romantic

songs to grace the Ameri-can songbook. Billie Holi-day, Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire have put their own unique spins on the song.

* "At Last": Although Ella Fitzgerald was not the rst artist to record this song, her version is arguably the most popular.

* "What a Wonderful World": Louis Armstrong's rousing rendition of this classic can make any reception even more upbeat.

2 Brothers

Kittens

Spud & BrownieThese guys were found on the side of the

road. Spud is a pit bull mix and brownie is a boxer mix. They are both wonderful little guys looking for a forever home. Spud and Brownie are about 10- 11 weeks old, up to date on shots, vet checked and wormed.

For more information please call the shelter at 518-654-6220 or just come by.

We are open 7 days a weeks.

These babies were an owner surrender. They are Shepherd

mixes, 10 weeks, they have been vet checked and received

their first set of shots and worming.

A wonderful caring person was watching

these kittens for a couple of days and it appeared that they

had no mama. She watched, waited, and fed them then realized they were orphans. It is very common this time of year so she

brought them to us for safety. They are not really ready to go yet but in the next coming weeks they will be up for adoption.

Please come and meet them and reserve your purr bucket today.

For further information on adopting please call 434-8128 or visit www.mohawkhumane.org

Hi Folks, I’m Dasher. Right now you are probably wondering what kind of dog I am. I’ll tell you, a super cute one! I have a handsome face and silly short legs! But that doesn’t slow

me down. I love to play with my people and I’ve made lots of new friends at the shelter. I came in as a stray and I’ve been

waiting patiently for my new home. If you take me home today I promise to always make you laugh with my out-going

personality and quirky looks!

BACK-TO-SCHOOL

BUDGET TIPS (NAPS)—Preparing to go back to school used to be as simple as stocking up the latest textbooks and grab-bing a calculator. Today, college students and their parents regularly spend an average of over $800 on apparel, electronics, dorm furnishings and more. As a nation, that means spending for back-to-college reaches over $45 billion. When you add in monthly fees for Inter-net access, phone data plans and other ongoing technol-ogy-related expenses, the “basics” are more costly than ever before.

These costs, however, are dwarfed by the rising costs of tuition that often follow students well into their post-grad life. The average stu-dent now leaves school with nearly $30,000 of debt, mak-ing it hard to get ahead in post-college life—but there are ways you can save.

Budgets and Transportation

Students, and even post-grads, can go far toward putting a dent in their debt by fi nding smarter ways to budget their personal trans-portation.

For example, bringing a car to campus or into the city comes with high costs and hassles that go beyond the

initial price tag. Parking rates, gas, maintenance and repairs can add up quickly for a car that may often sit unused up to 90 percent of the time. Insurance, espe-cially for young adults, can cost more than the car itself.

Redirecting even a few hun-dred dollars per month from car costs could knock off nearly half the average stu-dent debt by the time gradu-ation comes around.

The good news is that it’s never been easier to get on, off and around campus with-out owning a car. To help maintain a budget-friendly university life style that can also translate to reasonable post-grad living, here are

four easy ways to cut trans-portation costs without sac-rifi cing convenience.

Tips To Lower Transportation Costs

• Shuttle Services: Seek out free shuttles both on-campus and around town, or university provided transit tailored for students.

• Wheels By the Hour: Check out a car sharing ser-vice such as Zipcar, which lets students pay for a car by the hour, with gas, insur-ance, 180 miles per day and 24/7 assistance included in the cost.

Zipcar is on more than 350 campuses across the U.S. at a discounted student price,

and continues as a benefi t after graduation for smarter city living.

• Get Fit and Get Where You’re Going: Alternative transportation, biking or walking when a car isn’t needed is a fi nancially savvy and healthy transporta-tion option. Bike sharing is another great option for occasional use with more than 21,000 shared bikes in at least 36 urban areas throughout the U.S.

• Mobile Transportation Apps: Smartphone owners can often use mobile apps to fi nd the best option for transportation in seconds. Download the RideScout app to view all of the trans-

portation choices in your area.

To learn more about what cost-saving options are available on campus, visit your university transporta-tion website or check out zipcar.com to learn more about car sharing.

Bringing a personally owned vehicle to a college campus can come with high costs and hassles that go be-yond the initial price tag.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS AT

THE GAS PUMP(NAPS)—Are you one of the millions of Americans who will load up their car this summer and head out for a weekend getaway? If you are, you might be paying the price at the gas pump. Across the U.S., consumers paid the highest average price for gas on the Fourth of July since 2008. Like many, you may question why gas prices peak in the summer. What goes into the price of gas? To understand why, you

TOP CAR COLOR CHOICES

OF MEN AND WOMEN

(NAPS)—When it comes to car colors, men and women follow diff erent roads.

Colorful Findings

A recent study by iSeeCars.com of more than 30 million cars revealed some illumi-nating information about just how the sexes diverge:

• Surprisingly, the favored car color of men is red, a hue they have a greater prefer-ence for, versus women, by 12.3 percent. Next is orange, which men prefer more by 11.8 percent, and black by

9.6 percent.

• Metallic colors are more popular with women. As op-posed to men, women have a greater penchant for silver cars by 9.2 percent, brown by 9.1 percent and gold by 7.3 percent.

• Red and black, preferred car color picks of men, are also the top colors for sports cars. For pickup trucks, white is the most popular color.

• Orange, a less-common car color option but a favor-ite of men, is found on sports cars and coupés more than any other vehicle type.

The study was conducted by iSeeCars.com, a car search engine that helps consum-

ers fi nd the best deals on used cars.

What It All Means

“These study results could suggest that women are more practical in their choices. For the most part, they may just want to buy a reasonably priced car that safely drives them around,”

need to consider the whole story.

Futures Fundamentals (www.futuresfundamen-tals.com), the new online resource brought to you by CME Group—the world’s leading derivatives ex-change—now provides visi-tors with an easy-to-follow road map of just how and where the decisions are made that determine the price of fuel.

Futures Fundamentals’ latest tutorial, “Story of Oil,” takes learners on a journey from the ground to the pump through an engaging video and infographic. From ex-traction to price discovery at the exchange, and fi nally to the gas station, the journey of gasoline broadens visitors’ understanding of how the world around us works.

The “Story of Oil” is just one of the concepts made simple on the site, which also tack-les complex topics like food prices and mortgage rates. “Futures Fundamentals is a relatively new site, but we’re already hearing from teach-ers that it’s helping their students understand com-plicated issues. We’re going to continue developing this type of useful content that helps people understand the economics of the world around them,” said Anita Lis-key, CME Group Managing Director, Corporate Market-ing & Communications.

suggested Phong Ly, co-founder and CEO of iSeeCars.com. “On the other hand, for men, perhaps they may be a bit more idealistic about cars, preferring something that has speed and is fun to drive.”

Men and women have diff erent ideas about what color a car should be.

Finishing the Summer Season With A Flourish

August and early September is a busy time in southern Saratoga County. For many, the chance to head over to the Saratoga Race Course and enjoy the six-week summer spectacle is something not to be missed. Area hotels appreciate the fact that tourists come from miles around to spend their vacations and support our re-gional economy. The story of a Saratoga County sum-mer doesn’t end there, however. The calendar is full of events in every community, ranging from waterfront festivals to concerts and movie nights to agricultural celebrations. We are probably living in the most per-fect “staycation” community in the state! For example, glancing at our chamber’s community calendar, one can find the 12th Annual Jailhouse Rock 5k at Brook-side Museum on August 16. Sponsored by Ballston Spa National Bank, this event supports educational programs for area schoolchildren. Also in Ballston Spa, the weekly concerts in the park continue each Thursday through August 28. Youth for Christ in Halfmoon has a golf tournament coming up on August 18 at Shaker Ridge, while the Visiting Nurse Service has a benefit golf tournament coming up on September 12 at Ballston Spa Country Club. On August 23 in Clifton Park, the Shenendehowa Adult Community Center at Clifton Common is home to the Sum-mer Fair & Car Show, with music, line dancing and of course cars and hot rods.

Waterford will be home to the Tugboat Roundup from Sep-tember 5-7, featuring tugs from all over the region, plus a boat show, alternative fueled barges and the weekly farm-ers’ market. On September 6 from Stillwater to Halfmoon, volunteers will be “Kayaking for Meso” to help stamp out the scourge of mesothelioma. Also coming up in Septem-ber: the Saratoga Showcase of Homes and Clifton Park Farm Fest. Please visit www.southernsaratoga.org for more information on these events and more – and enjoy the rest of your summer!
