CALLING ALL MENTORS!

CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organiza-tion that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move to-ward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with stu-dents on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while develop-ing a relationship that pro-vides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This pro-gram focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a posi-tive role model in the stu-dent’s life. You will help the student to develop core val-ues and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empower-ing them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a week-ly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a posi-tive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

THE STORY OF BARNABY THE JUGGLER WILL BE TOLD AT CORPUS CHRISTI CHURCH

ROUND LAKE - on Tuesday, June 17, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Who is Barnaby you ask? Barnaby wanders from town to town, juggling balls and pins. He often finds himself alone at night and wondering if there is more to life. Can you relate to Barnaby? Are you wandering about and wondering what life is all about? What is going to bring happiness and fulfill-ment? Have you wondered about God? Faith? The Catholic Church? The Roman Catholic Community of Corpus Christi is sponsoring an informal gathering to share the story of Barn-aby and to answer questions you may have concerning the Catholic faith. We will gather in the Church Hall, 2001 Route 9 at Ushers Road in Round Lake on the 17th at 7 p.m. Contact Justin Loviglio at [email protected] or Karen Stockton, 371-7359 or [email protected]

BACKPACKS OF HOPE TO SUPPORT VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

CLIFTON PARK – Members of The Chamber of Southern Sara-toga County’s Women In Business Committee are reaching out to the community for help with their charitable initiative, Backpacks of Hope, which supports mothers and their chil-dren utilizing the services of Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Saratoga County (DVRC). Backpacks of Hope is part of the Committee’s Baskets of Hope initiative, which has been providing women entering the Saratoga County Domestic Violence Shelter with baskets of personal care items. The backpacks and school supplies meet the needs of the children who are also affected by domestic violence. The Women in Business Committee seeks donations of back-to-school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, glue sticks, etc. Donations of personal care items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other toiletries are also welcomed year round. Anyone who wishes to participate in this worthy program can do so by bringing donations to The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, located at 15 Park Avenue in Clifton Park (behind Shoppers World Plaza). Questions about the program should be directed to Liz Roggenbuck at 371-7748 ext. 108.

CLEVER WAYS TO CIRCUMVENT COLLEGE COSTS College tuition and fees are perpetually on the rise, so it’s no great surprise that today’s students are graduating with more college debt than ever before. Though some students might feel helpless with regard to avoiding student loan debt, there are some clever ways for youngsters to pay for college and stay out of debt.

* Work with a service organization. Many universities are affi liated with nonprofi t organiza-tions, and students who work for affi liated organizations may be eligible for scholarships provided by the organization and/or the university. Wages for workers who take advantage of such programs tend to be very low, but those students who serve full stints could earn scholarships worth several thousand dollars. Students can explore such opportunities by speaking with their universities to determine if the schools are affi liated with any service organizations. If not, students with a desire to give back can fi nd charities that reward their workers with college scholarships.

* Sign up for studies. College students often lament their lack of spending money. That’s especially true today, when many students put their earnings from summer jobs or intern-ships toward their tuition. But opportunities for relatively easy money abound on college campuses, where researchers need subjects for studies. Signing up to be a subject for a study can be an easy and lucrative way to earn money that can be used to pay tuition or everyday expenses that often go overlooked when planning a budget. University job boards or depart-ment bulletin boards often advertise needs for study participants, so college kids strapped for cash should monitor such boards in an eff ort to earn some extra income.

* Start a business. Though college kids might not have the time to start building the next For-tune 500 company, starting a small business can be a great way for students to earn money and set their own schedules. A tutoring business that caters to local high school students or even fellow college kids can be a great way for college students to make practical use of their education. Just a few hours of tutoring each week can be enough to help college students mitigate the costs of campus life, and if the business grows big enough, students might even be able to put a dent in their tuition fees.

* Live at home. While living at home is an option available only to those students who attend in-state universities within spitting distance of Mom and Dad, it’s an increasingly reasonable decision for students worried about accruing excessive student loan debt. While room-and-board fees vary widely, U.S. News reported that the average charges for on-campus living during the 2013-14 school year were $9,689. Over the course of four years, students will spend nearly $40,000 just to live on campus, and many students will pay those costs via stu-dent loans. Students whose primary goal is to avoid substantial postgraduate debt may fi nd that living at home, while not necessarily ideal, is the most eff ective way to do just that.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the 2013-14 PayScale Salary Survey, which examines salary data for full-time employees in the United States who possess only bachelor’s degrees but no higher degree, petroleum engineering is the most lucrative major with regard to salary potential. Petroleum engineers earned an average annual starting salary of $103,000, and those salaries ballooned to $160,000 by mid-career, when typical graduates in the study had 15 years of experience

in their fi elds. Though engi-neering majors dominated the survey’s top 10, second place on the list went to actuarial mathematics ma-jors, whose average start-ing salaries of $58,700 were more modest than those of petroleum engineers. How-ever, by mid-career actual mathematics majors closed much of that gap, with av-erage salaries hovering at $120,000.

FATHER’S DAY CELEBRATIONREXFORD - Dads are so important in our lives! We thank God for the di erence you make. We’d like to warmly invite you and your family to our June 15th Father’s Day celebra-tion (and yes, It’s free!). Come enjoy great food including a chicken bar-b-q, fun games and activities and relax with new and old friends. Picnic begins at 11:45 (following our 10:30 worship service) Faith Baptist Church, 11 Glenridge Road, Rexford. For directions and information visit our website and www.faithcrossroads.org.

CELEBRATE DAD AND SOME HISTORY THIS FATHER’S DAY

Father’s Day has been celebrated in one form or another since the beginning of the nine-teenth century. Perhaps the most driving force behind Father’s Day was Senora Dodd, who thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Dodd wanted to honor the sacri ces that fathers make. Father’s Day was not formally considered a holiday until 1972, when a Congressional Act o cially designated the third Sunday in June Father’s Day.Families celebrate Father’s Day in many ways. This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15. Dads who are history bu s may want to celebrate this year’s holiday by reminiscing about the notable events that have occurred on June 15 through the years. Here are just some of the many historical events that took place on June 15.* 1752: Ben Franklin performs his famous kite- ying experiment to test the electrical power of lightning.* 1775: George Washington is appointed Commander in Chief of the American Army.* 1878: The rst attempt at a motion picture takes place. Twelve cameras, each taking one picture, focus on horses’ hooves to see if they will leave the ground.* 1887: The New York Giants baseball team beats the Philadelphia Phillies 29 -1.* 1916: The Boy Scouts of America receives its congressional charter.* 1918: An inch of snow falls in northern Pennsylvania.* 1924: Native Americans are proclaimed U.S. citizens.* 1934: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is dedicated.* 1940: France surrenders to German forces as Nazi troops occupy the city of Paris.* 1968: John Lennon and Yoko Ono plant an acorn at Coventry Cathedral.* 1977: General elections are held in Spain for the rst time since 1936.* 1985: The Russian space probe Vega 2 lands on Venus.* 1992: Vice President Dan Quayle famously misspells the word “potato” at a spelling bee.* 2002: An asteroid misses hitting Earth by 75,000 miles.* 2003: The San Antonio Spurs defeat the New Jersey Nets to win the NBA Championship.* 2012: President Barack Obama indicates the United States will stop deporting some illegal immigrants.* 2013: An estimated 40,000 residents of Piedra Negras, Mexico, are devastated by ooding.

WHIPPLE CITY FESTIVAL

MUSIC LINE - UPGREENWICH - The Green-wich Chamber of Commerce announces the musical line-up for the 2014 Whipple City Festival occurring Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. Friday, June 13, 2014, following the conclusion of the parade, local musical group, Big Easy Revue, will take the stage at the gazebo at Mowry Park beginning at 6:30 p.m. Led by Greenwich resident Matt Edwards, Big Easy Revue (formerly known as Buck2Fifty) is a 5 piece band that brings a swing-ing, Calypso and soulful mix of music which sounds like it comes straight from the streets of New Orleans. On Saturday, June 14, 2014, the gazebo will be alive with more musicians to entertain the crowds. Get Up Jack takes the stage at 1 p.m. playing Irish and contem-porary music. Get Up Jack is a new musical adventure from former area favorite Hair of the Dog members, John Haggerty, Mike DeAn-gelis and Scott Apicelli, along with three other area musicians. If you enjoyed Hair of the Dog last year, you will love Get Up Jack this year! Stick around Saturday night and enjoy the country-bluegrass-rock sounds of Eastbound Jesus beginning at 7 p.m. Greenwich native brothers Luke and Carl An-derson are joined by other talented musicians as they perform their own original songs that are sure to be crowd favorites.

THE WHIPPLE CITY FESTIVALGREENWICH - This year, the Whipple City Festival will once again feature living history demonstrations in Dorr Park. On Saturday June 14th there will be four regiments reenacting four different periods in history. The 2nd Continental Artillery Regiment is a group of re-enactors from the Revolutionary War. Cannon will be on display as well as firearms from that period. Musket firings will take place at different times during the day and several campsites will be set for display with re-enactors in period dress. The 125th NY Regiment Association will be representing the Civil War period. This living history group represents a typical military campsite of 1861 and is chartered with the NYS Education Department. Tents and campsites will be set up. This group will have musket firings during the festival and wooden muskets will be available for children to help the re-enactors do musket drills. The 99th In-fantry Division will be representing World War II. A field table, 4-5 puptents, an ammo box as well as WWII weapons will be on display. This year we are also adding WWI to our group of reenactors. They will have a table with memorabilia from that era. Of Rubber Ducks and Real Live Cows

Each year, Father’s Day weekend offers area resi-dents and visitors a chance to enjoy two very dif-ferent events which provide unique family fun for children of all ages. On Friday, June 13, the Me-chanicville Duck Derby pits floating rubber ducks against the currents of the Anthony Kill, as a crowd of attendees watches the proceedings and hopes that their duck will be the first one to reach the finish line (or the last, which also wins a prize). The Derby is designed to be a low-cost, community event which allows the largest number of people to participate. That evening, a fireworks display by Alonzo Fireworks will light up the night sky, in celebration of the heritage and spirit of the city and its residents. The Mechanicville-Stillwater Area Chamber of Commerce and its team of dedi-cated volunteers coordinates the event on behalf of the city. A couple of days later, Sunday (Father’s Day) June 15, a very different event featuring real animals will take place a few miles north at Welcome Stock Farm in Northumberland. Sundae on the Farm was conceived 19 years ago to give local residents a chance to see where their food comes from, and to meet the farmers who toil in fields, barns and so-called “milking parlors” to supply

food products to local store shelves. Sundae on the Farm features Stewart’s ice cream sundaes (hence the name), flavored milks and pie a la mode, plus hot dogs and hamburgers for hungry guests. Tours of the farm are conducted, as well as a farmers market, food dem-os by local chefs, horse drawn wagon rides, live music, kids’ activities, a spelling bee, and much more. So if Dad wants to see something very unique this Father’s Day, a visit to Sundae on the Farm will fill the bill. Visit www.saratogafarms.com for more information. Hope to see you there!

No ProblemCall Jerry 321-5457HOW TO CUT

YOUR COMMUTING

COSTS A daily commute can be physically stressful, but many people fi nd their daily trek to work fi nancially taxing as well. Commuting costs have risen considerably over the last decade-plus, as higher fuel costs have eaten into many household budgets. But commuters accustomed to grinning and bearing it with regard to their daily grind might be surprised to learn that there are some ways they can cut their com-muting costs and possibly even reduce some of the physical stress stemming from their daily odysseys to and from the offi ce. The fol-lowing are a handful of ways to trim the costs of your daily commute.* Establish a ridesharing pro-gram at your offi ce. Research from the Center for Trans-portation at the Washington Policy Center in Seattle has shown that carpooling to work can be as much as 61 percent cheaper than driving alone. Many highways feature com-muter lanes that are exclusive to vehicles with two or more passengers. Veteran commuters know that such lanes tend to be the least congested lanes on the highway, so taking advan-tage of the commuter lane by sharing rides with one or more coworkers can save time as well as money. The benefi ts of ridesharing are numerous, and include saving money on fuel (sharing driving duties with just a single coworker immediately cuts your commuter fuel costs in half ); extends the life of your vehicle by reducing daily wear and tear; and also allows you one or two days a week to unwind during your commute while someone else takes the wheel. * Ride a bike. Admittedly, men and women who aren’t entirely healthy or those who live especially far away from the offi ce or in regions where the weather is often unpleasant may not be able to turn their bicycles into tools for cutting the costs associated with their commutes. But riding a bicycle to the of-fi ce each day will cut your commute-related fuel costs by 100 percent while also providing a boost to your cardiovascular system. Regular cardiovascular exercise has been shown to reduce risk a person’s for various conditions, including heart disease, while also reducing stress. Even riding a bike to the offi ce twice a week can cut your commute-related fuel costs by 40 percent, so if cycling to work is a realistic possibility for you, give it a try.* Propose the idea of telecommuting to your employer.

Many employers have grown more lax with regard to employees working from home. Some employers recognize that less strict telecommuting policies make for happier and more loyal employees, who can drastically reduce their childcare costs in addition to commuting costs by working from home. In addition, employers can benefi t by moving into smaller offi ces with more aff ordable rents. Telecommuting one or two days a week can save you a substantial amount of money, so propose the idea to your employer, even suggesting a trial period to see if it’s a viable option be-fore either side makes a full commitment.
