Colorado and Wyoming

Contemplations

Introduction•Sherelyn and I recently shared a wonderful trip to Colorado and Wyoming, where we participated in a weekend gospel meeting, marveled in the natural beauty of the Rocky mountains, and were reminded of the colorful history of the American West.

The Pleasant Association of Brethren•We enjoyed our meeting with the Poudre Valley Church of Christ in Loveland, Colorado. Indeed, there is a brotherhood of believers (1 Pet. 2:17). •We have many connections and relationships within the family of God (Rom. 16:1-16).

The Powerful Testimony of Nature

•Driving through northern Colorado and southern Wyoming, we marveled at the breathtaking beauty of God’s creation: mountains & valleys, forests & meadows, rivers & streams, etc. •The Psalms frequently employ the imagery of mountains. Driving through the Rocky Mountains, one is reminded of such verses.

The Painful Catastrophe of Sin•Touring the Wyoming Territorial Prison in Laramie, we were impressed with the tragic consequences of sin. •Criminals, such as Butch Cassidy & the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, are often glorified; yet, reality is more sobering. Theft and murder are grievous offenses. Government has a divine mandate to punish evildoers (Rom. 13:1-7; 1 Pet. 2:13-17).

Drugs & Alcohol•Wall exhibits testify that drugs and alcohol led many

into a life of crime. Morphine was readily available in those days, promoted as a cure for everything from toothaches to toenail fungus. •May Preston Slosson, who served as prison chaplain

from 1899 to 1903, said, “After hearing so many confidences I became a pronounced prohibitionist, many being brought to prison through strong drink.”

Conclusion•Sherelyn and I enjoyed a delightful nine days in Colorado and Wyoming. • It was great to be with the Thetford family, and share in their labors in Loveland. We were blessed to meet fellow-Christians, with whom we share so many connections.

Challenge•Seeing the beauty of God’s creation lifts the spirit, and grants a deeper appreciation of His divine power. •Rest and relaxation are also helpful, enabling us to return to our work with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
