seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter

“Come together as we await the wonder.”

Dear Parishioners,

Tradition calls this Sunday, Gaudete! The Sunday of joy as we have passed the midpoint of Advent and the excitement for the Feast of Christmas deepens.

In this weekend’s Gospel, John the Baptist announces that he came to testify to the light, Jesus Christ. How much we need the “light” of Christ! Darkness affects us in many ways. It comes through when we experi-ence harshness towards others, it comes through when we encounter people who are driven by anger or criticalness, it comes through when we encounter those who seek to tear down rather than build up.

The light that Jesus brought into the world has served as a beacon for compassion, mercy and kindness. The light of Christ includes those often overlooked. The light of Christ embraces those who suffer or are discouraged.

The calendar does not help us this year when it comes to Advent. There is no fourth week of Advent. Next Sunday is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. It is also Christmas Eve. Next Sunday we will observe the Fourth Sunday in the morning and transition to Christmas Eve beginning with the liturgies at 3:00 p.m. I am so grate-ful to our liturgy committee that has organized all of this so well. It is quite demanding dealing with the practical details of observing both celebrations in one day.

The bulletin includes all the times for our observances of the end of Advent and the Christmas season.

As the end of the calendar year approaches I am grateful for all the sacrifi ces you have made to close the gap concerning our budget. Through the Planned Offertory Program, many have increased their weekly

contributions. Thank you! I know that you have many needs to support.

I am also grateful for your faithful-ness regarding the pledges made for our capital campaign, To Teach Who Christ Is. Look at all that has been accomplished! We have a renovated apartment for the Sisters, a new reli-gious education center, a new youth ministry center, a parish ministry center, Hickey Hall, the Hearing Loop technology and an upgraded sound system in the Church as well as new steps and plaza for the Church and rectory, and a STEM lab for the school. We have upgraded the light-ing in the parking lot and enhanced handicapped parking.

We have many more projects we hope to fund; including the third fl oor of the parish ministry center, renova-tion of McDonnell Hall, more STEM labs, street parking, Glenview Road entrance and support for our sharing parishes. I am grateful to the Finance Council and the Parish Pastoral Council that are helping in the over-sight of the campaign and prioritizing projects.

I want to call your attention to a special program at Bellarmine Retreat House for veterans coming home. They are sponsoring a spiritual outreach program for veterans who often have been deeply affected by their military service and struggle with reentry. It is free for veterans; please refer a returning veteran to www.ComingHomeRetreats.org for more information. We are so grateful for their service.

The liturgy these days reminds us that, “the day draws near when the Lord will come”. May these days be fi lled with grace amid so much that needs to be done.

May your Advent be blessed,Fr. Jerry Boland

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

In today’s second read-ing Paul concludes his letter to the Christian community at Thes-salonica by providing it with actions to take as they wait for the return of the Lord.

The fi rst action is to rejoice always and give thanks in all circum-stances. This sounds easy but it’s not. The two words that make this task diffi cult are “always” and “all”. This means giving thanks and rejoicing even when our circumstances are not always moments of joy and thanksgiving, or when we are confronted with a broken world.

Prayerful stewards rejoice and give thanks in all circumstances be-cause they are people of hope. A good refl ec-tion this week would be how the season of Advent can give you reason to hope.

seek, share, rejoice - parish news

Teaching Parish Program

Dear OLPH parishioners,

I am excited about this chance to update you on my progress towards the priest-hood. Just a few months ago, I started my assignment at OLPH. Since this time, I’ve met many wonderful people. The parish block party was a fun time and it got me very excited to be a part of your thriving parish. You have so many joyful and generous people, I do not know if I will be able to meet and get to know you all and the ministries in which you participate by the end of my assignment.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share with everyone a little more about the pro-gram that allows me to minister here. It’s called the Teaching Parish Program and it

was just started this year at OLPH. It allows me to spend about eight hours a week over the next four years serv-ing in the parish. I am allowed these hours if I can maintain my priestly formation and full-time graduate student responsibilities. I still live on campus at Mundelein and I commute to Glenview for the small windows of oppor-tunity I am given for service in the parish. I really try to maximize my time when I get here, so if I have not had a chance to be present at your ministry yet, please know that I hope to get the chance over the next four years.

This fall, I served in a bible study and attended the Men’s Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) retreat. Both have been great experiences and I highly recommend them. This spring I will participate in another bible study. In addition to this, I will observe the preparation of the parents of the 2nd graders for their fi rst reconciliation and Eucharist. I look forward to the new and powerful ministry experiences that are planned for the future.

Sincerely in Christ,Michael Lingaur

Stewardship ReportRecently, we were behind in our general offertory and you responded generously. Many parishio-ners have increased their pledges to the Planned Offertory Program. Collections have rebounded since late September. We are optimistic if this trend continues, it will have a positive impact on our parish mission and how we minister to our community and beyond.

If you have not returned a commitment form for the 2018 Planned Offertory Program, please know you are able to return one by mail, in the offertory baskets or by dropping it off at the Parish Ministry Center (former convent).

Thank you for your generosity and continued support of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish.

Befriend A Family UpdateWe have placed all families currently being served by Sr. Paulanne and our parish social worker, Beatriz, but there is always last-minute need at the Parish Center door. Contact Stacy Dolan, [email protected], if you would like to provide gift card help to these fami-lies who will be seeking Christmas support.

Canned Goods as Hostess GiftsAre you planning to entertain this holiday season? Many of our gatherings fi nd guests bringing hostess gifts in appreciation of our invites. Consider suggest-ing canned goods in lieu of these gifts. The Sharing Ministry will gladly pass this food on to the hungry.

Catholic Charities Volunteer OpportunityCatholic Charities (Des Plaines) is looking for a vol-unteer to manage their St. Julia’s Clothing Boutique when it is open to the public on Wednesday after-noons from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. If interested, contact Denise Yonkers, [email protected].

Jewel Christmas Dinner DonationsJewel Foods in the Glen (Lake St. and Patriot Blvd.) welcomes donations for frozen ham and turkey din-ners which they will prepare, completely cooked with all sides; each complete meal will serve 10 – 12 people. Donate any amount at the checkout and you will brighten Christmas for a needy family. This Thanksgiving, Jewel donated over 130 full turkey din-ners to our Sharing Ministry through this effort and they donated an additional 40 uncooked dinners to Sharing since the holiday. We are most grateful for their generous support of our outreach efforts!

December Sharing Meeting/GatheringTuesday, December 19, 7:00 p.m.The Sharing Ministry will hold an early Christmas celebration at the home of Betty Collins.

Please continue to remember the needy throughout the Advent season!

As we enjoy this special time of year with our families, we can take care of Mother Earth as well by trying a few of these tips:

Use a real tree – and recycle it! Though it may feel sad to cut down a tree for the holidays, consider that most Christmas trees are grown expressly for the purpose (so you’re not contributing to deforestation), and can be planted or composted when you’re done with them. Plastic trees, in contrast, require petro-leum to make, and then can’t be recycled easily when you’re through with them.

Recycle wrapping paper — or better yet, forgo it. Try making your own wrapping paper and trimmings from newspapers, paper bags, art projects, clothes, dish towels, etc. And if you do buy new wrapping paper, go for the kind without glossy metallic coating, which makes it harder to recycle.

Lower the thermostat. If you’re cooking and hosting company, chances are you can get away with lower-ing the heat in your house, because the body warmth and heat from the oven should help compensate.

Lose the lights. Think about cutting back on excessive

house and yard lights. If you are decorating with lights, try switching to the LED variety, which can use 90 percent less energy than regular holiday lights.

Buy in bulk. Instead of purchasing cans of soda, small bags of chips, and serving-size baking supplies, stock up on bulk goods to reduce packaging waste.

Use real dishes. While disposable plates and silver-ware are easier if you’re hosting crowds, the environ-ment will thank you if you buck up and do the dishes.

Serve less meat. Chicken, pork, and beef, take a heavier toll on the environment than vegetables. Cows, especially, produce copious amounts of meth-ane, which is even worse for global warming than carbon dioxide. Instead of serving turkey, ham and pot roast side-by-side, consider replacing some of the meat on your menu with tofu or veggies.

Preparing the Stable of Our HeartsAdvent is a time for us to refl ect on Jesus’ coming into our world. Each year we pause to remember that Jesus was born for us, that he still lives among us, especially in the poor and through the Eucharist, and in the tenet of our faith which is “Christ will come again.”

Just as we prepare for our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day celebrations, Advent is a time for us to prepare the stable of our hearts where Jesus comes to be born over and over again.

Young Adults at the Lyric Opera

Last week, three of our young people joined Father Paddy to see “The Pearl Fishers” by Bizet. “Why on earth do you take the juniors and seniors to the opera?” is a question I am often asked. As an educator, I believe we should let the greatest and most beautiful in the world impact our young people. Very many of the concerts teenagers go to can be vulgar and can only too eas-ily drag them down on a destructive path. For this reason, I would love the chance to provide the opportunity for our parish’s young people to be posi-tively impacted by the world’s greatest composers and some of the world’s most gifted singers and musicians. If I had the funds and the time, I would also love to take them to Orchestra Hall to listen to symphony concerts.

In Chicago, we have easy access to the very best in the world, and it is a true joy for our young people to be present. I hope parents will take their sons and daughters to the opera or symphony at least once over their school years.

Project Linus Blanket MinistryThe OLPH Project Linus Blanket Ministry made a total of 87 quilts during the 2016-17 budget year. The quilts were greatly appreciated by everyone who received them. Often anxious and fearful, the infants and children were either homeless, in shelters, or in hospitals.

During this holiday season and beyond, giving and sharing to help the less fortunate is the primary goal of the OLPH Project Linus Blanket Ministry. We will resume our 2017-18 meetings in January. We hope to far exceed our last year’s total quilts completed. After the holidays, please consider joining our ministry as we resume making quilts for needy infants and children. Beginning in January, please watch the OLPH weekly bulletins for upcoming Project Linus meetings. The group will be meeting on the last Wednesday of every month from January through November. No special talents are required, just the desire to help children in need.

FFun with Buddies

We pair our youngest with our oldest Warriors in our Buddy Program, where once a month two grade levels connect for a fun and engaging activity. From coloring to dancing there can be laughter and cheering found from the hallways. These multi-age experiences are amazing to see and we’re not sure who has more fun . . . the older or younger ones!

ReconciliationAs part of Renew My Church, we are part-nering with neighbor-ing parishes.

An Act of Hope

When faith falters,Virtue fails,

And deeds of love are few, Then, Lord, I pray

That we may turn in hope to you. So why are we disheartened

When those whom we appoint Reveal themselves as only human

And inevitably disappoint? May we hope not in our strength,

Wisdom, goodness, nor our reason, Not in our economy, technology,

Nor the latest, greatest of a season. Turn our eyes to you, Beloved One,

Beauty, ever ancient, ever new, Birthing hope, not of our own making

But from you, in you, through you. Jesus, I trust your words of hope,

Cutting deeper than a knife: “I’ve come in love for only this—That you may have New Life!”
