seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter

Dear Parishioners,

“Master that I may see”

These words of the blind man Bartimaeus in this weekend’s gospel can be applied to all of us. There are many things that we are unable to see because of the sinful infl uences of pride, selfi shness or self-righteous indignation.

St. Bonaventure taught that one of the great blessings was the ability to see the world through the eyes of faith. It is through this gift we can better appreciate the gift of creation or the precious gift of life. It is through the eyes of faith we can see the world from the point of being more merciful or compassionate.

I think of the great prayer of St. Teresa of Avila whose feast day we recently celebrated;

“Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours.Yours are the eyes through which he looksCompassion on this world.Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.Yours are the hands through which he blesses the world.Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body on earth but yours.”

We are challenged to see what others do not see. As a person of faith, what are the occasions I have been blind to the feelings of others, the complexity of situations that are not simply black or white?

In a community of faith, in a parish, we can become blind to others’ needs that we can’t relate too. We can be blind to the terrible infl uence toxic people can have on the spirit of a faith-fi lled community. The Lord yearns for us to build up rather than tear down, to be merciful rather than judgmental, to complement rather than criticize.

The parish offers many opportunities to open our eyes to his redemptive love. This weekend, several women are on a CRHP weekend at the Bellarmine Retreat House. Please pray for them. In a few weeks, the men will be away for their CRHP experience. Through scripture study, Evolve, daily prayer and the reception of the Eucharist, we allow our eyes to be opened, in order that we may see.

Melissa Conroy will be leaving her position as Director of Communications to pursue other opportunities. I have been so grateful for all that she has accomplished during her time here. She strengthened our communications effort at this time when there are so many new technologies that are emerging. I wish her all the best! Thank goodness she will remain as a parishioner.

As we move into November, we enter a time of many celebrations. Thursday is the Feast of All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. Friday, November 2 is the Feast of All Souls Day. That evening we have a special Mass for all those in the parish that have experienced the death of a loved one. I always fi nd this liturgy so comforting. It is eye opening how many families face the death of a loved one during a year. Please pray for these grieving families.

I am so grateful for all those involved in our bereavement ministry. We are so blessed with a group of such caring people who walk with families at the time of death to do everything possible to make sure their loved one is celebrated as the Rites of Christian Funerals are observed. Our music ministry also tries to be as present to families as they can be.

This Saturday is our annual Parish Summit which brings together all our parish leaders.

Have a blessed week,Jerry Boland

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

After healing the blind man in today’s Gospel Jesus told him to go, to be on his way. But the man chose to follow Jesus. Being a disciple of Jesus is a choice.

The stewardship way of life likewise involves a choice, in fact many choices. We choose to be grateful, we choose to live generously, and we choose to trust that God will always provide for our needs.

These are three choices central to the steward-ship way of life.

What choices will we make this week that give witness to our deci-sion to follow Jesus Christ?

Youth Ministry Visits Hilda HouseLast Saturday, a group of junior high students visited Hilda's House in Evanston to help prepare and serve the evening meal. They also had the opportunity to join residents for dinner and enjoy their company. A few of the refl ections heard that night...

“I can’t wait to come again!”

“This was awesome!”

“The men are so nice and smart too!”

“I can’t believe how fun itwas to help serve dinner.”

Visit the Youth Ministry page of our parish website to learn more about service, spiritual and social events.

Sharing Ministry News

Fall Food Drive, sponsored by Guild 30

October 27 - November 18Guild 30 is once again sponsoring a parish-wide food drive. Each week’s collections will be delivered to one of our four Sharing parishes. Next weekend’s dona-tions will be delivered to St. Sabina's Food Pantry, which serves an average of 570 families per month. They are most grateful for this food drive and indicate they have special need for:• Canned vegetables and fruits• Canned stews and pastas• Canned meats and fi sh• PB & J • Canned soups• Cold and hot cerealPlease plan to participate in this important month-long drive. Last year’s event brought in over 42,000 cans of food, which represented close to 40% of all food items donated to Sharing in 2017. Let’s work to match this number and make Thanksgiving a time of abundance at the pantries we serve.

Needed

Guild 30 invites donations of boxes, of manageable size, for the food drive. Deliver your boxes to Vic Hernandez's front porch, 1965 Prairie St. in Glenview.

Our Lady of Tepeyac Elementary School

Benefi t, Friday, November 96:00 – 10:00 pm; 2235 S. Albany, Chicago, 60623

We are organizing tables ($75/person) and also wel-come raffl e prizes and the purchase of raffl e tickets. Please contact parishioner Mary Anne Sebby, [email protected], for tickets and other information.

Operation TurkeyThanksgiving is just around the corner. Consider do-nating a frozen turkey and brighten the holiday for a needy family. Turkeys can be delivered to the Sharing Room entry the two weekends before Thanksgiving (November 10/11 and 17/18) during Mass times.

Jewel foods at Patriot and Lake will also be collect-ing for fully prepared frozen turkey dinners on behalf of Sr. Paulanne and the families she serves. Shop the store, make a donation, and Sharing will pick up the dinners. Look for this opportunity, which will run early November through Thanksgiving.

Fill a Bottle, Save a Life!Help young mothers who fi nd themselves in diffi cult circumstances. The OLPH Respect Life Committee distributed empty baby bottles on Sunday, October 7. Please bring your fi lled bottles to church on October 28 or turn them in anytime at the Parish Ministry Center. When you return them full of coins, bills and checks, your gifts will help those served by Aid for Women and the Women’s Center.

ARRIORS Our Homecoming festivities began with a special luncheon for retired staff. It was so good to see them and hear their news. Then it was off to the Playdium for a spirited Pep Rally. From the cheerleaders to the band to the teacher versus student relay race (the students won again!) and teacher tug-of-war, a fun time was had by all! While the 8th grade football team’s hopes for a win were dashed ur cross country warrior girls team placed 10th and the boys team placed 9th in the State Finals … Go Warriors!
