Dear Parishioners,

“You are anxious and worried about many things.”

In this week’s gospel, Jesus is just not speaking to Martha, He is speaking to all of us. I suspect many of us are anxious and worried about many things. Jesus affi rms that one of the by-products of a deep faith is the gift of abiding peace. We yearn to be released from the grip that anxiety and worries can have on us.

We all have stress that builds up in our lives. There are things we can control and there are things we cannot control. I fi nd that there is tremendous reassurance in the meaning of Jesus’ encounter with Mary and Martha. Centering our lives on the redeeming love of Jesus gives us the perspective and confi rmation that we can face what we need to face.

This weekend we formally welcome Fr. Patrick Kizza (pronounced “cheeza”) to OLPH. If you have met him I am sure that you have been taken by his contagious smile and engaging spirit.

Fr. Patrick was ordained last May. We were deeply honored to celebrate his First Mass. It was a liturgy people are still talking about. I was so honored to meet his parents. It was great that they could see the parish he will be serving. Fr. Patrick spent the month of June in his native Uganda. His First Mass there drew 2000 people.

OLPH has been privileged to accompany many newly ordained priests in the formative period of the fi rst years of their priestly ministry. Any priest who has served here has made friends for life and learned so much about parish life and the signifi cant role a priest has in the formation of a parish.

OLPH has a great legacy of being a teaching parish for seminarians and newly ordained priests. My hat is off to you! The seminary and the Cardinal have expressed to me how confi dent they are in this parish’s ability to form the future. I am deeply grateful for the efforts you take to include us in your lives and to assist us in being better priests.

I sometimes get anxious about how we can respond to ever increasing needs and the limitations any one of us has amid it all. Then I remember it is not about me, it is about Jesus Christ and the People of God. You have helped me and all the priests in this very diffi cult time, in ways you will never know. Without you, I would never have gotten through this past year of such pain in the Church. While the future is still going to be quite a challenge, I have no doubt OLPH will thrive as it faces the future with such faith. I for one thank you for the many ways you affi rm my ministry and that of all the priests who serve here. We gather each Monday in the rectory to pray and I always leave that experience of prayer feeling so blessed to be at OLPH.

Thoughts on the

Sunday ScripturesMartha and Mary are the focus of this weekend’s Gospel, which abounds with rich themes about hospitality, service, and fi nding the right balance between action and prayerful attention to the Lord.

Christians who are good stewards of their faith life realize that if they are too busy to enjoy peaceful, private time with the Lord, then something is out of balance in their spiritual lives. If we make time for Mass, but then carry on with our busy schedules without prayer, meditation and refl ection, we are missing out.

If we fi nd ourselves anxious and harried by life’s routines, could it be a sign that something in our spiritual life needs some serious attention?

Starting at the end of this month, our historical video and memorabilia display will up and running in the South Vestibule of the Church. The displays will rotate depending on the given theme of each month of the Centennial.

When Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory is at our parish in early September, we would like to display items that commemorate his time as a parish priest here. So we want to issue a call for any historical items or photos that parishioners may wish to share that specifi cally feature Archibishop Gregory.

Please contact us at the email below if you have items of interest. After being displayed, all items will be returned to their owners.

Please contact us at the Centennial Committee email: [email protected]

seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter, 100 hours of mercy...We all suffer from the negativity that is in the air. There are people unfortunately that thrive on division and gossip. They need to be prayed for because there must be some profound pain in their lives, that they cannot face. Jesus calls us to His love, which is the “better part.” He calls Martha and us to new life and hope!

Last week’s mass at Wagner Farm was a great success. Despite the heat, we had a wonderful celebration. I am grateful to our Engagement Ministry for all their efforts.

Our next mass at Wagner farm will be Aug. 10th.

Special thanks to Randy McGraw and our Youth Ministry for coordinating an effort last weekend to assemble brown bag lunches for people in need. With a very generous donation from the 6:30 morning Mass community, we were able to provide the Sharing Room Ministry with 500 brown bag lunches! Special thanks also to Betty Collins and Julie Cooper for their support. They and so many others are the heart and soul of our Sharing Ministry.

We continue to want to be a better steward of our environment. I am always grateful for the hard work of our Creation Care Ministry. I wanted to call your attention to the summer edition of the “Village of Glenview Report”. It has so much information on “Green Initiatives”; you can participate here in the Village. It is impressive.

May your week be blessed!

We would like all ministries, families, and individuals to let us know your plans for the "100 Hours of Mercy" initiative so we can post them in the Bulletin and on social media. What you do will inspire the rest of us to action.

Please support the Boy Scout Car Wash, Saturday, August 10, from 10:00am to 2:00pmin the OLPH parking lot.

This is going to be a "100 Hours of Mercy"initiative and their goal is to wash 100 cars.

Boy Scout Troop 57 and Cub Scout Troop 57 are hosting this event. This is an excellent opportunity for all kids and teens to learn about scouting, so all are welcome to come and help.

The scouts are asking only for a good will donation. One half of the proceeds are going to Sister Paulanne's Needy Family Fund and the other half to support the Boy Scouts.

For more information contact John [email protected]

How can I get involved?

Parent Effectiveness TrainingThere are three recognized ways of resolving a difference in any relationship.

First there is authoritarianism. In parent-child relationships that means that the parent dictates the solution to the child. The child must carry out the parent’s solution. This is often done with deep resentment towards the parent. It is a case of the parent winning and the child losing.

Next there is permissiveness. In this case the child dictates the solution and the parent has to carry out the child’s solution. No adult likes to be dictated to by a child. In this case it is the parent who resents carrying out the child’s solution.

The vast majority of differences are settled in either of these ways. In the case of authoritarianism, the child feels squashed. However, in the case of permissiveness, no adult is happy being pushed around by their child.

Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) shows parents that there is no need to rely on these two methods. In fact, they are both destructive of the relationship in the long term. We search for an alternative method which really respects the needs of both parent and child.

Program Dates: Sep.18 - Nov. 6, 2019; Sign up now! Please come to our PET training sessions which begin September 18. Application forms are available in the Parish Center or in the South vestibule of the church.

PET will be taught by Father Paddy Tyrrell and Dr. Elizabeth Swider. Classes will be held Wednesdays, 6:30-9:00pm.

An appeal to all parishioners: The summer months are the most challenging for the parish in terms of maintaining a strong fi nancial base. It is the time when our Sunday mass attendance is low due to the fact that so many parishioners are on vacation during this season. Conversely it is the time of year when many of our parish maintenance projects take place. So we have the combination of low incoming contributions and very high expenditures.

We are always so grateful for the generousity of everyone in our OLPH parish family. We just want to send out this gentle reminder to support our parish even during the dog days of summer.

And remember, GiveCentral makes it easier than ever for you to provide your support.
