seek, share, rejoice - pastor's reflection

Father Jerry Boland

Dear Parishioners,

“Be patient, brothers and sisters.” The opening line from the Letter of St. James is a great one to hear. This time of the year most of us struggle with patience. We face: traffi c, long lines, misunderstandings, expec-tations and frustration that can test our perseverance. St. James challenges us to stop complaining, another great Advent challenge.

Tradition identifi es this Third Sunday of Advent as, “Gaudete” Sunday. In Latin, this is the Sunday of Joy as we have now passed the midpoint of Advent. The message of the scriptures is to rejoice, for we can overcome the forces of impatience and complaining with faith, compassion and mercy.

It is great to have Fr. Michael Sparough, SJ from the Bellarmine Retreat House preaching at many of our masses this weekend. Perhaps a retreat in the coming year could jump start your prayer life.

Tomorrow evening is our annual Advent penance ser-vice. The service begins at 7:00 p.m. The celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation can be a wonderful way of experiencing the grace we need at this time of year.

Speaking of patience, thanks to all who joined the celebration last Sunday at Middy Mags! My respect for those who wait tables has quadrupled! It was a great evening, and the turnout was terrifi c. As of today Sr. Paulanne received $5,200 in proceeds from the tips. Special thanks to Charlie Kuhn who came up with this idea and organized it. Also special thanks to Mike and Mary Maginot for letting us have the run of their restau-rant. The food was great, and it was a wonderful night on a snowy evening.

I have been appreciating the efforts of Rob Orr and Ben Tchaou in telling the story of our parish through videos and pictures. They are so generous with their

time and expertise. Through their efforts we are able to share our parish life with a wide audience. I also deeply appreciate Jim Gelderman’s hard work in pro-ducing weekly podcasts of our homilies (fi nd them on iTunes). I know many people appreciate having access to these many ways of communicating.

I am grateful for your continued consideration of the capital campaign, “To Teach Who Christ Is.” We need to get as many parishioners that can to participate in order for us to be able to achieve our goal of $5.5 million. Bob Hicks and I met with Mr. Paul Jones, the Chairman of the Board of Glenview State Bank. They have supported us so often in the past. Mr. Jones pledged $100,000 on behalf of the Glenview State Bank! We are now approaching the $4.7 million mark. Please consider a pledge as you plan your end-of-the-year giving. I appreciate the sacrifi ces that you make to meet the many requests that come your way.

The fruits of the resources and projects of the Cam-paign are happening. The Sisters have moved into their residence; Religious Education has moved into their new Center. Next weekend Hickey Hall will debut with Fr. Nick’s presentation on Advent. Your investment in the future is happening!

I would like to close with a refl ection of Pope Francis on this Gaudete Sunday; “The Christian message is called the Gospel, i.e. the Good News. The Church is not a haven for sad people, the Church is a joyful home”.

Have a blessed week,

Fr. Jerry Boland

"The message of our scriptures today is REJOICE! We can overcome the forces of impatience and complaining with faith, compassion and mercy."

Supporting The Retired ReligiousIn the United States today, there are more than 33,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and reli-gious order priests. Many religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and elder-care. Each December, OLPH Church makes a contribution to the Retirement Fund for Religious. We do not take up a second collection, but rather give from our First Fruits. The retirement fund helps provide medications, nursing care, and more.

Christmas Food DrivePlease support the Sharing Ministry’s effort to collect and distribute food to those in need, locally and through the four sharing parish pantries we support. Drop your donations at the church entry, donate through the children at the offertory, or deliver to the Sharing Room. Your donations will brighten Christmas for people who are hungry. Many thanks!

Too busy to shop for the food drive? We’ll do the shopping for you! Mail a donation made out to the OLPH Needy Family Fund to Lou Marohn, 2132 Fir Street, Glenview, IL 60025. Food will be purchased in case lots to stretch and maximize your donation.

Jewel Dinners for Needy FamiliesJewel (Patriot and Lake) is inviting donations for frozen, boxed Christmas dinners which they will prepare, complete with all the sides, each to serve 10- 12. These dinners are then being donated to the OLPH Sharing Program for distribution to the pantries we serve as well as local families who come to us in need. Sharing re-ceived 111 of these dinners at Thanksgiving and thereby served about 1332 people.

Special thanks to Jewel and the shoppers who are mak-ing this happen!

OLPH Be-Friend A FamilyBe-Friend a Family needs you to be a part of our holiday outreach to needy families. We have about 200 needy families, some enrolled and others waiting in the wings, eager to receive grocery and gift support this Christmas. Each family is paired with an OLPH individual, family, guild, scout troop or randomly matched team. Food gift cards are the preferred form of support. Your Be-Friend a Family relationship remains on-going until the needy family gets back on their feet or until you choose to opt out of the program. You drop off your donations locally

and the Sharing Ministry will handle delivery of goods to the needy family.

Join the effort! There is still time to take on a family on your own, with your group, or donate a food gift card in any denomination, which we will combine with others to provide support for a needy family. Contact Stacy Dolan [email protected] or 847-840-9394.

Canned Goods in Lieu of Hostess GiftsAre you planning to entertain this holiday season? Many of our gatherings fi nd guests bringing hostess gifts in appreciation of our invites. Consider inviting canned goods for the needy in lieu of these gifts. The Sharing Ministry will gladly pass this food on to the hungry.

Gift Cards WelcomeSr. Paulanne is requesting gifts cards to Walmart, Target or other stores of your choice as she works to meet the needs of the poor who come to the convent door. Denominations of $25 - $50 work best. Donations can be delivered to the convent or rectory mailboxes or dropped in the Sunday collection baskets in an enve-lope marked for Sr. Paulanne. Also welcome are gift cards to McDonald’s and Subway. Thank you for your consideration of those less fortunate.

Sharing Ministry Opportunities

Toys for Needy Sharing Parish KidsBrighten Christmas morning for a needy child!

Welcome!

The Widowed Support Group will have their next meeting on Monday, December 19 from 9:30-11:30 am in the Flavin Room. Contact Kathy at [email protected] or 847-902-6319 for more info. All widowers and widows are welcome. This is not grief counseling.

This Week's GospelFrom the loneliness of his prison cell John the Baptist asks of Jesus: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” The weeks before Christmas offer much to be joyous about, celebrating with family and friends, the glitter of seasonal decorations, the excitement of gift giving and receiving.

But in our midst there are the lonely and neglected, the poor, the hospitalized, the wayward, the shut-ins. There are those seemingly without hope. To whom should they look? Discipleship in the Lord includes being good stewards of others. Are there those in our family, our neighborhood, our com-munity to whom we can reach out to show them a sign of Christ’s presence in their midst?

Parent Effectiveness TrainingNew Course Begins January, 2017Ever wish children came with an instruction manual? They do! Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.) offers proven commu-nication skills that work. When parents use these skills, they are amazed at the improvements in their families. P.E.T. was created by Dr. Thomas Gordon (three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee) in 1962. Over the nearly 50 years P.E.T. has been around, it’s been revised and updated with new content and examples that address the problems, issues and concerns of today’s parents. You, too, can learn these powerful, time-tested, proven skills!

Class meets every Wednesday evening from 6:30-9:00 pm, starting January 25 and ending March 15. Make up class in case of weather will be March 22.

Cost of tuition includes materials, and the rest of the proceeds go entirely to the OLPH Youth Group.

Tuition for one person from each family is $170; each additional person from the same family is only $85! If you have attended class before, you may attend the class for free. Sign up at:

Commissioning MassExtraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to the SickOn Sunday, December 11, at the 11:00 Mass, seven new Ministers of Care to the Sick and Homebound will be commis-sioned by the Archdiocese of Chicago. These men and women of our parish have completed their initial formation which consisted of a training program of six parts. Ministers of Care visit the sick and home-bound with the Holy Eucharist, share with them the word of God in scripture, pray with them for the Church and the world, and offer them companionship. Ministers of Care are a sign of the support and con-cern that our Church has for the sick, the elderly, the homebound, or anyone experi-encing a time of need.

Please join the parish in celebrating this Ministry and welcoming new members of our Ministry of Care community. We congratulate the following new Ministers of Care:

The Playdium was transformed into a Winter Wonderland for Breakfast with Santa. Children cheerfully waited to meet Santa, share their Christmas lists and have their picture taken. Families were greeted by the voices of our school choir, while 8th graders and staff provided crafts, coffee and donuts. Thank you for generously donating over 250 gifts for the children in our sharing parishes…What a magical morning!

Help us to be a worshipping com-munity, devoted to Mass, praying with and for one another, and lifting our voices joyfully in song.

Help us to be a welcoming communi-ty with smiles and outstretched arms as we greet all who enter our doors, be they friends or strangers.

Help us to be a community of good stewards who support our parish and are compassionate to the needs of the poor.

Help us to be a ministering commu-nity, cheerfully and tirelessly offering time and talent in service to others.

Help us to be a community of dis-ciples who place You, Lord, at the center of our lives.

We ask these things in Your Holy Name.

Amen.

The Parish

Transformation InitiativeFor several weeks in the Spring of 2016, a team of pa-rishioners embarked on the Archdiocesan Initiative called Parish Transformation. A tool for revitalization and growth, Parish Transformation encourages parishes to reexam-ine how they are carrying out God’s mission in the world. Because parishes are made up of people, the process asked us to look into our own hearts and to discern if we are personally living Jesus’s message of discipleship. Our meetings were fi lled with spirited, passionate dialog that celebrated our parish’s many gifts while also acknowledg-ing areas where we might improve. These discussions lead to our setting goals for our entire church community to explore and together set a vision for the future of OLPH.

In the weeks to come, you will be hearing more about the Transformation Plan for our Parish. We invite you to join us as we work toward our many goals. In The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis hopes “that all communities will devote the necessary effort to advancing along the path of a pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are.” Let’s all work together to transform our parish into a welcoming oasis to those who thirst for God and one in which we live in harmony with His Kingdom.

Creation Care Ministry Update

The Creation Care Ministry has been meeting regu-larly since the beginning of this summer. Along with you, we have begun the journey of living the message of Pope Francis in his encyclical, Laudato Si, here at OLPH. Here are just a few of our efforts so far. Last June, a special mass was offered commemorating the fi rst anniversary of Laudato Si, and Father Nick gave a wonderful homily reminding us of the need to care for God’s creation. We then initiated efforts to encourage recycling in our Parish at the Block Party in September with the help of the Men’s Club—you may have noticed the recycling bins. This past month we continued the recycling theme at the Holly Fair with the help of the Women’s Club. While much more needs to be done we have started to incrementally make progress—stay tuned!

We all can do more in our homes as well and we sug-gest you see the many websites that discuss recycling. For instance, on the Village of Glenview website much can be learned on how to properly recycle at Go Green Glenview— http://glenview.il.us/Pages/GoGreenGlen-view.aspx

Finally, in this holiday season, we ask that you remem-ber the words of the Holy Father in Laudato Si in which he said:

“Christian spirituality proposes a growth marked by moderation and the capacity to be happy with little. It is a return to that simplicity which allows us to stop and appreciate the small things ...” — No. 222

And so let us pray:

We live in your world, O God, and for this, we praise and thank you. Among your treasures we creatures have fashioned many things to make our lives easier, healthier, and freer. But we have also created more things than we need, more than we can ever use. When these things distract us from our purpose in this life, we

are misusing the world you have created. When these things prevent others from having their basic needs met, your creation is corrupted. Help us to keep our eyes open to this temptation of consumerism. Help us to be followers of Jesus who are focused on the important and simple things in life -- Christians who care for others and are willing to share our riches with those who have unmet needs. Give us the courage to go against our cul-ture when it confuses wants and needs. Remind us that when the journey of life in this world is complete, we take with us only what we have built inside ourselves: treasures of the heart, love and generosity, friendship and concern, caring and sharing. We pray for these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.

-- Catholic Wisdom Leader’s Guide

We invite you to our meetings on the fi rst Monday of each month usually in the Flavin Room (Rectory base-ment) at 7 PM. Come see how you can “Care for our Common Home.” Questions--Contact Jim Riley (847-724-0667 or [email protected]) or Mark McKin-ley (847-323-4614 or [email protected]).

We look forward to seeing you.
