seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter

Dear Parishioners,

“The jar of fl our did not go empty, nor the jar of oil run dry.”

This weekend’s fi rst reading is taken from the Book of Kings and tells the story of the poor widow who serves Elijah her last bit of fl our and oil and now has nothing to feed herself and her son. In recognition of her kindness, the Lord provides her with fl our and oil that will never be depleted.

Sometimes we can feel we are running out. It may be energy, it may be patience, it may be resilience. With many de-mands and expectations placed on us, we can feel overwhelmed. The scrip-tures remind us that in our poverty, in our inadequacies, in our limitations, the Lord stands before us with open arms. He sees our struggles and burdens and seeks to walk with us.

I mentioned several weeks ago that I am in my fi fth year as pastor and we are expected to participate in a comprehen-sive evaluation process. The intent is to enhance our effectiveness, to better appreciate our gifts. It is also a tool of discernment. A determination by the Archbishop is made in the sixth year as to whether a pastor is extended or not.

One of the hopes at this point is to en-courage a pastor not to “run out of gas”. The archdiocese has seen several pas-tors who burn out or are simply going through the motions. This is not good for the pastor let alone the parish.

The process is called, 360 By Design and was developed by the Center for Creative Leadership. A process em-ployed for many executives in a wide spectrum. It seeks feedback from a vari-ety of perspectives to see where there is consensus and where there are different perceptions.

The process depends on a lot of par-ticipation to validate what is being evaluated. Anyone could participate, and some people are specifi cally con-tacted so feedback comes from those I report to, those who report to me,

parish leadership and parishioners at large. I was presented the fi rst round of evaluating the feedback and I was over-whelmed. I can’t thank all of you enough for your participation. I had the highest parish participation rate of the priests in the process and my consultant thinks a record established. The questionnaire was not just checking boxes and I was deeply touched by the many comments that you went out of your way to share. There was a signifi cant endorsement of my leadership and the direction of the parish. No parish is perfect and certainly no pastor is perfect. I am reviewing the many suggestions and fi ndings to build on my strengths and address my limitations. At some point I hope to make available an executive summary for those who are interested. I am so blessed to be here!

We have been very busy with all sorts of things going on. Holly Fair was a great success. Hundreds came to get in the holiday spirit! The Men’s Club coat drive collected over 800 coats. The Women’s Club food drive is in the midst of collect-ing thousands of food products for the pantries of our Sharing parishes. The annual Parish Summit sponsored by the Parish Pastoral Council was a great success. Well over a hundred of the ministerial leaders gathered for prayer and discussion. Our eighth grade girls’ volleyball team is the best of the Catholic League going 25-0 to capture the cham-pionship. Our eighth grade football team fell a bit short in the fi nals but had a great season. I had a great conversation last week with parishioner Ron Malik who founded the OLPH football program in 1954.

As Veteran’s Day approaches, let us pray in gratitude for all those who have served our nation. We can never be grateful enough for the sacrifi ces they have made to protect our freedoms. We pray especially for those who made the ultimate sacrifi ce.

Have a blessed week,

Rev. Jerry Boland

Jerry Boland, Pastor

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

In today’s Gospel Jesus said: “You shall love your neighbor as your-self.” It was not meant to be a suggestion or an option.

He didn’t say when it fi ts into our day or suits our time schedule, or after we’ve completed our various recreations.

It is a requirement for Christians; to exercise good stewardship over the neighbors entrusted to us by God.

It is a requirement often ignored when we put up barriers of anger, fear, or intolerance for a neighbor.

How can we look be-yond our own personal diffi culties to see what we can do to love the person who lives next door, works next to us, or who sits next to us in the church pew?

Come Follow MeA Special Talk with Fr. Nick KostykSunday, November 11, 2:00 pm | Hickey HallThe Transformation Team proudly presents Fr. Nick Kostyk adding his refl ections on this topic:

“Come, follow me: A Catholic understanding of Christ’s invitationto a personal relationship.”

As a part of the second phase of our Transformation Journey, we hope to explore ways you can deepen your relationship to Jesus. In these challenging times, it is very easy to get lost in the mind-numbing clutter of our daily lives. We invite you to spend a little time listening to Fr. Nick’s insight on this subject.

Prayer for VeteransToday, we honor our veterans, worthy men and women who gave their best when they were called upon to serve and protect their country. We pray that you will bless them for all their un-selfi sh service in the continual struggle

to preserve freedoms, our safety, and our country's heritage for all of us. Bless them abundantly for the hardships they faced for the sacrifi ces they made, and for their many dif-ferent contributions to America's victories over tyranny and oppression. We respect them, we thank them, we honor them, we are proud of them. We pray that you will watch over these special people and bless them with peace and happiness. Credit: Actionministries.net

seek, share, rejoice - sharing ministry & food drive...

Fall Food Drive, sponsored by Guild 30 through November 18

Thank you for the overwhelming response to the 2nd week of the food drive -- 9100 items were delivered to St. Sabina's!!

Next weekend is the fi nal weekend of the drive with donations going to Our Lady of Tepeyac. This pantry serves about 440 families per month, over 4468 families in 2017. They are most grateful for this food drive and indicate they have special need for:

Non Food Items: Food Items:

Laundry detergent Canned soups

Quarters, any amount, for doing laundry (please donate in zip lock bags)

Canned vegetables

Hygiene items: Toothpaste, ra-zors, shave cream, feminine pads, deodorant

Cereal (without sugar)

Canned fruit

Canned cocktail hot dogs

Crackers

Please plan to participate this important month-long drive. Last year’s event brought in over 42,000 cans of food, representing close to 40% of all food items donated to Sharing in 2017. Let’s work to match this number

NeededGuild 30 invites donations of boxes, of manageable size, for the food drive. Deliver your boxes to Vic Hernandez's front porch, 1965 Prairie St. in Glenview.

Next Sharing Meeting The Sharing Ministry will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7:00 p.m. in Hickey Hall (parish center). All are welcome.

Operation Turkey

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Consider donating a frozen turkey and brighten the holiday for a needy family. Turkeys can be delivered to the Sharing Room entry the two weekends before Thanksgiving (November 10/11 and 17/18) during Mass times.

Jewel foods at Patriot and Lake will also be collecting for fully prepared frozen turkey dinners on behalf of Sr. Paulanne and the families she serves. Shop the store, make a donation, and Sharing will pick up the dinners. Look for this opportunity, which will run early November through Thanksgiving.
