EFSA European Line Class Championships 2007 – Weymouth

At the time of writing this report, I only have 20 entrants from the Eng-lish Section. The closing date for entries is March 1st (very close). We have 212 boat places but these are a maximum and, if these seats are not filled, we will have to make a decision regarding the cancellation of some boats. This decision will be made before the end of March.

The net result for those not getting their entries in by the due date will be that no place will be available for them.

Prior to the commencement of the meeting, the Chairman made the following state-ment.

Firstly, I would like us all to take a few moments to reflect on 2006 and in particular to take time to remember the passing of one of EFSA England’s most gentlemanly members, Mr Les Smith, who passed away in the summer. He was always there at most of the events and never lost the will to compete and just loved his fishing, so if you please let us take a moment in silence to remember Les and all our past members and friends who are no longer with us.

4. Executive Officer's Reports:

Chairman's Report: The Chairman gave the following report to the meeting.

2006 was as busy as previous years and the Committee have met on three occasions to discuss and organise the Section’s business. These meetings take up to five hours and a great number of items are discussed. As you know, Kim stepped in to take over from Charlotte as our Secretary and I, on behalf of all the Committee and Members would like to express our thanks for diving in and instantly taking control of the position. It is not easy to take on a role of such importance without a great deal of preparation but Charlotte did everything to assist Kim and I would must to thank her once again.

Within the Agenda there are a few Elections of Officers to vote on. These being my-self, as Chairman, Ray Ashby as Fish Recorder and Jim Whippy as PR Officer. How-ever, it is with regret, and unfortunate, that Andy White has decided to stand down as our Press Officer so I would thank him on behalf of the Committee and the member-ship for his work in progressing this role forward. I feel it is an important role and if there is anyone who wishes to offer their services to the Section please do come for -ward.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank David for all his hard work as the Vice Chairman and Standing Committee member for the Section and to congratulate him on becoming EFSA HQ Boat Festival Officer. This is an important role within EFSA and I know in my mind that David will do a fantastic job for the Federation. Well done David and good luck, oh! and NO, you cannot leave the English Commit -tee, so please do not ask!

The year has seen us venture to other venues for our Boat Championships and Cod Festival and I know how difficult it was for Andy to organise, but it all went well. In particular, the Boat Championships were a revelation with so many fish to be had and I feel we will one day return to Rhyl. The Shore anglers have had a very busy year with all events being well supported and a great thank you must go to Brian who quietly gets on with everything to the pleasure of all who participate in these events.

Overall, the Section has had a great year in Shore and Boat competitions, as you will hear in the reports during the meeting. I would like to congratulate all the members who achieved their goals, be it in winning a pin or being part of a winning team but, more importantly, in taking part and enjoying the last twelve months competitions.

This year we host the European Line and Boat Championship’s and under the Chair -manship of Tony Hudson the Sub Committee are doing a great job and am confident that the event will once again be a great success. All the year’s events are listed in the Newsletter for you.

As always, I would like to thank the membership for attending the AGM and for sup-porting the events we hosted and attended. Also, I must thank all of the Committee for their hard work in running the Section and, in truth, last year was a tough one for me

Page 5: COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2005 - EFSA England  · Web viewIt never ceases to amaze me the range of areas we fish in and how diverse the angling. 2006 saw us in the far North, deep inside

personally and without their continued support I know some things would have been overlooked.

Finally, I wish you all a great year and hope to be able to catch up with many of you at events but most importantly of all, please remember this is a sport within which to enjoy friendships.

Vice-Chairman’s Report: Mr Styles gave the following report to the meeting.

Well another year gone and many great events attended. I was particularly pleased to see the exceptional results obtained by our Shore anglers in Ireland in the European Championship, truly outstanding successes in both individual and team events. Once more the Section has an individual European Champion and Team Champions, well done Budge Booker and all the Team. We the Section are immensely proud of the feat, as you the individuals must undoubtedly be.

It never ceases to amaze me the range of areas we fish in and how diverse the angling. 2006 saw us in the far North, deep inside the Arctic Circle and just South of the Equa-tor to round off the year. 2007 will hopefully, God willing, see us return to Iceland af-ter a long absence and exploring new grounds in Portugal. As always there are plenty of events, home and abroad, whether your interest is shore, boat or game angling; if you participate in all three you really have a conundrum on your hands; short of win-ning the lottery which events do you enter?

Kim Bowden your Secretary has now completed his first year and we as a Section are fortunate that he wishes to continue in post, thank you Kim. As people are often wont to say, the first year is always the hardest. What is not shouted quite as loud is all the following years aren’t much easier, only joking, honestly.

Committee meetings have been relatively well attended although we only managed 3 this year. As you will see Andy White has decided to move on and I thank him for how he has tried to progress the website. We really do need to work on this aspect of our communication; I can only look with envy at the website that a small Section such as Iceland has managed to put together. If you have experience at developing and up-dating a website the Committee really would appreciate your help, with the ever de-veloping facets of angling available within the Federation it seems that only electronic means enable us to communicate in a timely fashion with everyone.

As you will see later in the Agenda under “Special Business” the Committee have looked at how to make the business of the AGM more transparent and have proposed some changes to the Constitution to address this. I trust you understand the reasoning and will support the proposals.

The 3 Chairmen of Selectors have started working to new Protocols and as you will see their contact details are within the Newsletter. The reason for this? We want you

Page 6: COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2005 - EFSA England  · Web viewIt never ceases to amaze me the range of areas we fish in and how diverse the angling. 2006 saw us in the far North, deep inside

to talk to them! All three are experienced in their field and can provide guidance and first hand information on venues being fished and what is sought in a potential Team member. If you have never considered representing the Section they should be your first port of call and can give guidance on what Selectors are looking for, and how best to prepare to address this. Thank you Gentlemen for your diligence and sound counsel.

Without rattling on forever about how good everyone has been, I just wish to say we are always listening, always fine-tuning and always trying to give a better service to everyone. I know the individuals who attempt to do this care deeply for the Section and what the Federation as a whole is about. The reason? Simple, you the members. We like our members, hopefully we are friends more than acquaintances and in the Federation that is EFSA we know what it gives to us, and we want to give something back. Some decide to serve on the Committee, some to help out at events, others sim-ply to attend, that in itself is always appreciated but most of all to build on what has gone before and set new frontiers, new experiences and share in all that we strive to achieve. Let’s try to leave here and ensure 2007 is even better than all the years that have gone before.

Acting Secretary's Report: Mr Bowden gave the following report to the meeting:

Having had a taster of the Secretary’s job for a year, it has not deterred me from standing for the position.

Looking back through past records, I can see that many of the tasks in managing the Section have been shared among other Committee members, thus making this job easier. On the subject of the Committee, I would like to thank them for easing me into the fray and for the assistance given throughout the year. In particular, thanks to Neil and David for their patience and knowledge, which I frequently have need to call on.

I hope any contact I have had with the members has been to their satisfaction but if ever you feel there is anything lacking at any time, then please mention it as I am still trying to get a complete handle on the job.

All that remains is for me to wish you all the best for the fishing in 2007. It is going to be a busy year and I look forward to seeing you at the events. A lot of effort goes into organising them so please give them your support.Enjoy your fishing.

Treasurers Report: Mr Hart gave the following report to the meeting:

The past year has been very busy for the English Section with not only six events or-ganised during the accounting year but also a great deal of work in connection with the forthcoming European Championships in September this year at Weymouth, par-ticular praise should be given to Tony Hudson who does a magnificent job coordinat-

Page 7: COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2005 - EFSA England  · Web viewIt never ceases to amaze me the range of areas we fish in and how diverse the angling. 2006 saw us in the far North, deep inside

ing this massive event and also all the other members of the organising committee who have put in a great deal of time and effort for the benefit of all members of the Section.

The results for the year show a stable membership supporting the organised events and it is heartening to hear the comments of visiting anglers from other sections that see English events as the blueprint for how it should be done. This cannot be taken for granted and your continued support of events is needed to maintain our excellent standards and this includes sending in application forms as early as possible to stop the competition secretaries getting concerned about support for the events.

Festival profits were up by over £1200 from the previous year partly due to there be-ing six rather than four events and also due to successful raffles and high numbers of participants. Bank interest is lower partly because rates on savings are lower than in former years and also because it has been necessary to pay over £8000 in advance for the Euro 2007 event in the form of boat and headquarters deposits and brochure costs. These will hopefully be recouped soon when competition entries for the event are re-ceived and the monies are returned to the Money Manager account.

With regard to the expenditure, EFSA headquarters membership costs have increased since 2005 and the committee meeting expenses have also substantially increased be-cause of the extra meetings necessary for the organising of the Euro 2007 event.

In conclusion, it has been another successful year for the English Section with the promise of an even more successful one in 2007 provided we obtain expected numbers of participants in Weymouth. I must remind you to apply as soon as possible as the foreign hordes are preparing to send in their entries and the places are allocated on a first come first served basis, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Acceptance of the Accounts was proposed by P.Rivers, seconded by N.Cottington and approved unanimously.

Membership Registrar's Report: In the absence of Mr Smith, the Acting Secretary gave the following report to the meeting:

In 2006 we had a total of 222 Members, made up of 97 Life Members, 3 Honorary Life Members and 122 annual members. There were 6 Affiliated Clubs.

Thanks were given to those members who had sent through stamp-addressed en-velopes. This was appreciated as it helped to keep costs down. Members renewing their subscriptions should send their cheques made payable to European Federation of Sea Anglers (England) with an S.A.E to Mike Smith at the address shown in the Newsletter. It was noted that some members had not been receiving their Newsletter, especially new members, and the Committee agreed to ensure that the current mailing list was up to date. It was also noted that members paying by Standing Order should

Page 8: COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2005 - EFSA England  · Web viewIt never ceases to amaze me the range of areas we fish in and how diverse the angling. 2006 saw us in the far North, deep inside

ensure that their old bank order was cancelled before initiating a new one. A special note to this effect would be included in the February Newsletter. Fish Recorder's Report: Mr Ashby gave the following report to the meeting.

The number of entries this year has remained about the same as 2005 with many good fish once again being recorded. We could do with more entries though, as some months the choice is only between two or three fish. Members are reminded that fish weighed and returned at sea are eligible provided that a reliable witness can verify their catch.

The EFSA Boat Championships in Norway provided the winner of our overseas fish of the year in 2006, that being Colin Searles with a fine Cod of 38lb, one of many good fish caught at this event.

On the junior front, we had fewer entries this year, but the quality remained high. The winner was eventually judged as Floyd Wellington with a Wrasse of 6lb 1oz to add yet another fine fish to his ever increasing list.

As mentioned earlier, this year provided some notable catches amongst our fish of the month contenders. Our ladies are also getting in the act, with Liz Cunningham from the West Wight Club beaching a superb Sole of 3lb 2½oz. Dave Lynes from our local Poole area landed a fine Bream of 5lb while Bob Anstey from the Portland Club found two Wrasse around the 7lb mark from Portland rock marks.

Once again it was difficult to find an overall winner this year, but finally it was de-cided that Dave Roberts’ Cod of 27lb 13oz deserved the honours. Dave’s fish was caught on light uptide gear in the Mersey in difficult tidal conditions, and no doubt caused many heart stopping moments in the course of landing. The fish is also an ex-ceptional size fish for this area. Dave therefore takes this year’s Norman Witt Trophy for the best catch of the year from Boat or Shore.

Public Relations Officer's Report: In the absence of Mr Whippy, the Chair-man read his submitted report.

Apologies for not being with you this year at the AGM but Pat and I are avoiding the worst of the weather in Madeira at the moment. Last year was a very successful one for the Section in which the EFSA word was spread far and wide resulting in some new members and a greater awareness of our Federation. We are getting known as a well-organised Section that can run major events, and I’m sure the European Line Class and Boat Championships at Weymouth will enhance this reputation even further in September. Our prowess at angling is also well known with EFSA members com-peting at the highest level with considerable success. All the best to everyone and look forward to seeing you soon, if we can drag ourselves back.

Page 9: COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2005 - EFSA England  · Web viewIt never ceases to amaze me the range of areas we fish in and how diverse the angling. 2006 saw us in the far North, deep inside

Boat Festival Officer's Report: Mr Selby gave the following report to the meet-ing.

This year saw us going north for the first time for both our home events with the Eng-lish Boat from Rhyl, and the English Cod Festival from The River Mersey. Both events saw plenty of fish and were enjoyed by all that fished. The very disappointing thing for me was the lack of support from members “North of Watford”. Over the years, the Committee has taken criticism from these members that we do not fish our events away from the South coast. It was very frustrating as the Boat Festival Officer that the most vocal of these mem-bers did not fish either event! The support received from the local anglers that did fish was absolutely superb and certainly made up for others not attending. And, on a personal note, I look forward to the next tour of Liverpool by the highly recommended “Adamson Mystery Tours”.

This year we are returning to Minehead in June for our English Boat Festival and when we last fished the event there, we were very surprised on the amount of large quality fish caught. Our Cod event will not be returning to Dover in December due to the lack of boats at that port. Details of the revised venue will be notified in the News-letter.

We have noted that the numbers attending Festivals is considerably reduced from pre-vious years and we only had 23 English members at the Cod Festival and 38 English members at the English Boat. Why? We need to know and would appreciate a feed-back from the members as it is becoming increasingly difficult to stage a Festival or Championship with declining numbers.

The big one in 2007 is the European Championships from Weymouth. The accom-modation is filling well and, as usual, the Council are being very helpful with all that we have asked. A great deal of hard work has already been put in by the Committee, with an excellent brochure produced.

I wish you all a Happy New Year and look forward to another busy fishing year and meeting you all at our events.

Shore Festival Officer's Report: Mr Allum gave the following report to the meeting.

We have had a very full and successful year with most anglers attending three or more events. I personally think this is one of the most successful years that the Shore Sec-tion have had with an Englishman holding both the European individual Gold and Sil-ver Pins and European team. The only fly in the ointment was losing the Shore Cham-pionship of the British Isles to Wales, but then you cannot win every thing. Or can you?

I would like to thank the Committee for their help over the last twelve months, with a special mention to our Vice Chairman, Dave Styles, for all the help and advice -

Page 10: COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2005 - EFSA England  · Web viewIt never ceases to amaze me the range of areas we fish in and how diverse the angling. 2006 saw us in the far North, deep inside

which is greatly appreciated. To Andy Selby for the prizes and for taking the time to work out the results and faxing them back to me. To Ray Ashby for the medals and salvers and to all the Section members who have helped, for without these people, the Section would not work.

Press Officer's Report: There was no report from the Press Officer.

In the absence of the report, the Chairman expressed his thanks to Mr White and in-formed the meeting that Mr White would not be standing for re-election and presumed that this was due to the lack of support he had received during his term of office. The Chairman informed the meeting that the post was vacant and gave a brief summary of the role and suggested that skills in website construction would be an advantage for any member considering applying for the position.

Competitions Co-ordinator’s Report: Mr Barron gave the following report to the meeting.

Well, 2006 was a busy year, but all monies have now been banked for all the competi-tions with entries now coming in for the 2007 Boat Championships at Minehead. In my first year of doing this job it was the beach anglers who were sending the pre paid envelopes for their notification of entries. This year it has been mostly the boat anglers who have sent them in. Not being one to moan, but it would be nice if everyone could send a prepaid envelope as this makes my life a lot easier.

Standing Committee Delegate's Report: Mr Styles gave the following brief report to the meeting.

Full reports of the business conducted at the 2 meetings were carried in the Section’s July and November Newsletters so I have nothing further to add to those reports.

Since getting involved at Committee level for the English Section I have been hon-oured to represent the Section on the Standing Committee in tandem firstly with Ted Entwistle, then Keith Scaggs and latterly your Chairman, Neil Bryant. Well the time has come to move on; at present your Committee is looking to find a replacement or a couple of people who may be able to share the duties. I shall not be leaving the Stand-ing Committee merely sitting in a different capacity as an Officer of the Executive Committee of the Federation, namely, Championship and Festival Officer, Boat. As such my responsibilities are to the Federation as a whole and I shall not be able, or in-deed would it be correct for me, to represent the English Section viewpoint on mat-ters.

The person/s chosen will be expected to attend all meetings; in 2007 these are sched-uled for Dublin and Weymouth and naturally provide feedback to and from the Sec-

tion through the Committee and the Newsletter. Whoever is chosen, volunteers or press-ganged into the role I wish them well, and am always happy to provide whatever support I can. In closing I thank you for the trust and support you gave me.

Supplies Officer Report:The Chairman gave the following report on behalf of Mrs Bryant.

On behalf of Harriet who looks after the supplies, I am confirming the current situ-ation with the supplies and the items available. Could all members please send their orders on the approved order sheet, and not by telephone, this does make life a lot easier and keeps the records properly.

There is a new white shirt that has been approved for the use as part of the uniform for game Championships however these are available to all the membership to order at the price £23.50 (inc names, logo P&P) These will be on a special order item and not a stock item in the future. We do have a number of caps and rig wallets to be cleared and if anyone is interested please get in touch and place those orders.

This year has seen a drop in the number of sales and whilst we do try to take a selec-tion to the events it is not always possible so please do update your items and keep supporting the Section.

It was noted that the Order Sheet issued with the Newsletter would have to be amended accordingly.

9. Report on Festivals for 2007:

Swedish Cod Championship – Helsingborg: Mr Selby gave details of the event which had taken place the previous weekend. He informed the meeting that conditions and fishing were poor with very few fish caught. A full report will be within the Feb-ruary Newsletter.

Flounder Competition - Poole: Mr Selby gave details of the arrangements to those present for the event which was to be held the following day.

European Species Championship – Iceland: The Secretary informed the meeting that 8 Section members had entered so far. Brochures and entry forms are available from him. Mr Styles added that transport would be arranged once final numbers were known

English Boat Championship - Minehead: Mr Selby gave details of the arrange-ments to those present for the event, which is to be held in June and informed those present that further details would be issued in the Newsletter. He also reminded mem-bers not to get caught out by fishing too light, as the main species to be caught would be conger, rays and huss.

European Game Festival – Portugal: Mr Styles gave details of the arrange-ments to those present for the event, which is to be held in August and informed those present that further details would be issued in the Newsletter. He also advised the meeting that the event would be a big fish event as there were few of the smaller spe-cies worth targeting so it could be an all-or-nothing event.

European Boat & Line Championships: Weymouth: Mr Hudson reminded those present that the closing date for entries was just a little over four weeks away. He also informed the meeting that, to date there were only 15 English Section members entered, which was the total sum of entries so far. However, he had received informa-tion that about 40 Irish Section members would have their entry forms sent within the next few days. It was known that most Sections had set their own closing date of the

English Cod Festival:- Mr Selby informed the meeting that there were now only 4 or 5 full-time working boats out of Dover and, in view of this, the published venue would now have to be revised. He stated that he was now looking to return to the Mer-sey and hoped that he would be able to confirm this in the Newsletter.

Shore Championships of the British Isles:Mr Allum advised the meeting that this was to be held on the west coast of Ireland on April 22nd to 24th. No details were available and, in view of the short notice, full details and entry form would be made available via the February Newsletter.

Poole Flounder Competition Despite local reports of plenty of Flounders about, adverse tides caused the fishing to be somewhat slow for most of the day.8.45am saw the shore anglers disappear off to the local hotspots whilst the boats motored off to the recognised mark opposite the Ferry terminal. A few fish showed in the first hour on  the last of the ebb, however, as the tide eased so did the fishing and two of the boats Josephine and Gemini decided on a move This did not prove to be the right decision however, as a late flurry of fish in the last hour saw the other two boats Ooker (10 fish) and Aeries Two (7 fish) weigh in the most fish from the original mark. Over all winners was Marcus Wuest who pro-duced a late run of three fish for 4 lb 15oz in the last hour aboard Ooker. The heaviest Flounder of 2 lb 12 oz was  also caught aboard Ooker by Ray Barron, narrowly edging out a fish of 2 lb 11 oz caught by one of our juniors Sam Short on Josephine. Sam however collected the top junior prize ahead of James Lane. The full results are as fol-lows.

European Shore Championship Report - Ireland

The EFSA European Shore Angling Championship for 2006 took place on the Eastern beaches of County Wexford in the South East of Ireland from the First to the Fourth of November.

Competitors from England, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales competed for the title. The check-in and draw for pegs took place at the Championship Headquarters, Seàn Òg’s Hotel and Holiday Complex in Kilmuckridge on the evening of November First. EFSA Ireland Chairman George McCullough welcomed the com-petitors and hoped for a good Championship with sportsmanship and friendship to the fore.

The draw for pegs took place at 8pm to the mandatory EFSA format and was conduc-ted by EFSA Ireland Honorary Secretary Warren Doyle under the watchful eye of newly appointed EFSA Shore Festival Officer, Phil Lustig. With the draw complete and the formalities over, those present tucked into a well presented and delicious fin-ger food buffet sponsored by the host nation.

As the bait distribution time was not until mid-day the next morning, most of the anglers and guests adjourned to the convenience of the adjacent imbibing emporium for the customary exchange of misguidance and half truths which is generally associ-ated with these events.

Day One of the Championship saw the anglers bright and chirpy (most of them any-way) as they attended the draw for bait. The bait supplied was Mackerel, Sandeel and Black Lug Wraps. The venue for the first session was Courtown North and South Beaches. Starting at 14.00 Hrs the anglers were soon into fish. Flounder, Lesser Spot-ted Dogfish, Whiting and Dabs were steadily captured, measured and returned to the water. The leader after day one was Ireland’s Ian Knight with 17 fish.

Day Two saw the anglers compete on the Beaches at Tinnebearna and Ballinamona. This was to prove a different prospect with a few early fish and then a long lull before they found their appetite again. As darkness approached, whiting and dabs moved closer in to the relief the anglers. The best catch on day two fell to England’s Brian (Budge) Booker with 17 fish, which put him into overall first place.

The final session was contested on Morriscastle Beach, all eyes were on ‘Budge’ as the wise reckoning considered that he needed to finish in the first three to take the title. The catch rate was somewhat erratic with good ‘bags’ flanked by blanks or much fewer numbers. With everything to play for the intensity was palpable. As the day drew on the word on the beach was that there were a small number of good catches notably Hayden Cole from Wales who had been ‘pulling’ Dogs steadily at distance. At the end of the session the best for the day was Hayden Cole with 14 L.S.D’s taken on a single hook clip down at extreme distance with sandeel.

Report on EFSA Game Championship - Kenya 2006

Nine members of English Section travelled to Hemmingway’s on the Kenyan coastline. The hotel was amazing with Marlin, Sailfish, and a multitude of oth-ers species hanging from the walls in the reception and bar areas - it certainly made us want to go fishing as soon as possible.

We were there for 13 days, and with the competition only being 4 days, there was plenty of time to get some practice in. I am sure that everyone that went either had a personal best or new specie to add to their list.

All the boats were excellent, and the crew all worked really hard to help the an-glers achieve a fish of their lifetime. One of the fish of the holiday has to be a tiger shark of approx 1,100lb caught by Steve Parkinson on one of the practice days. With all Sailfish and Giant Trevallies being returned for points, the prize for the heaviest weighed fish went to Dave Styles with a King Mackerel of 43lbs.

This was a trolling event so after the event was over several countries took ad-vantage of drifting the 600 feet deep reefs, the action was non stop with treble shots of large red snapper not uncommon. The only problem was getting them to the top without something large trying to get a free lunch.

Congratulations must go to the South Africans who had a great method of catching a lot of Dorado and Sailfish; they really deserve their gold medals.

Report on English Shore Championships Eastbourne 2006

This year we tried to fish two venues - Dungeness and Pevensey Bay. Many anglers had expressed their wish to fish Dungeness but the weather, with gale force winds and gusts to 50mph made it impossible. We had to tuck ourselves up White Horses which was still fishing on the limit Day One: Even with the atrocious weather conditions, there were fish to be caught with many small Bass, Dabs, Whiting, Ling, Eels and a Jerry Knight special Pollack of 36cm. We used the catch and return system of weight to length ratio chart so all the Bass and other species went back alive. Day one winner was Saul Page.

Day Two: Much of the same weather and sea conditions but for the last hour the wind backed around to the north west which gave the anglers a little respite. I suppose the only thing that was in our favour that it did not rain. The fishing was more or less the same as day one, but Alan Yates who couldn’t fish on day on as he had a previous en-gagement on Tight Lines (and gave EFSA England a very nice plug) caught a nice Bass of 3:25 lbs. Day Two winner was Ian Hopper.

I would like to thank Colin Sargeant, Reg Clough and Dave Lovelock for the help in Pegging and the weighing in of the larger fish and eels.

EFSA English Cod Festival River Mersey

9th & 10th December 2006

This was EFSA England’s first visit to fish for Cod in the Mersey. The organisation had been a bit of a nightmare with many of the hotels being booked as Liverpool were at home. We eventually found a HQ hotel in Birkenhead in which most of us stayed. A big thank you to Rod Adamson and Tony Parry for all there help in sorting out ac-commodation and organising the bait.

The weather conditions were really against us with force 7-8 North-westerly winds on the Saturday which delayed the start to 11am but at least it gave us 4 hours fishing.Fishing proved hard with the amount of fresh water in the Mersey keeping the fish in the deeper shipping channels. After the first day Neil Cottington had a well-deserved lead after fishing in difficult conditions.

Thanks to Rod for the tour of Liverpool on Saturday Night and I’m sure the “Angels” photo will turn up somewhere!

The following day was a 6 am start with the conditions much better. It was good to see some of the boats catching plenty of cod with the top boat catching 42 amongst 6 anglers.

The day 2 winner was Ash (where’s my Fags) Currier who caught 13 cod for 489pts.If the conditions had of been better, I’m sure we would have seen double the amount of cod that were actually caught.

The overall winner was Ash Currier who had a great score of 604 - nearly 200 pts ahead of second place - so well done Ash in becoming our 2006 English Cod Cham-pion.

It was a great weekend and I would like to return again, but get the HQ booked early on the Liverpool Dock Side and make it bait supplied competition.

The only disappointing thing was the lack of support from some of the members from the Northwest who have been very vocal in the past for not holding events up North!

Page 24: COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2005 - EFSA England  · Web viewIt never ceases to amaze me the range of areas we fish in and how diverse the angling. 2006 saw us in the far North, deep inside

This year’s Festival was quite a way down in numbers with a lot of anglers staying away because of the predicted weather conditions – and they were right. The trip did not start well when we were delayed at Gatwick for 5 hours as the walk-way ramp broke down and could not be removed from the plane. Whilst waiting we noticed more and more domestic flights being cancelled because of the severe weather conditions. When we did eventually take off, the first 20minutes were like being in a tumble drier with the engines sounding like a Flymo (a high pitch screaming whine). Anyone seen the film Castaway? When the plane goes down the engines sounded like that. It was the first time flying I actually had sweaty palms and pants!

When we arrived we were met by Eric and the Swedish contingent and went straight to Café Ro to sign on and have a well-deserved beer or two after that horrendous flight.

As normal, we stayed in the palatial Marina Plaza and were warmly greeted by the staff (definitely the place to stay - good rates, great rooms, and really helpful staff.

The next morning we awoke to the storm that we left behind in the U. For those that know the area, the waves were breaking over the harbour wall and the straits were wild white water. The forecast was for the winds to drop from a Northerly 9 to force 5, so the start was put back 2 hours.

When we did eventually get out the conditions were still bad with waves breaking over the boats (and they are big boats). The drift was about 6 knots and chocolate col-oured water - it was not pirking conditions (or any other type of fishing). The fist day saw 330 of the 379 anglers blanking with the majority of the fish coming in the last ¾ hour at slack water to the stern or bow of the boat. Neil Cottington did well to catch a 2 kilo fish and get himself on the leader board.

The next two days were much the same although the wind did drop to around a force 5 but the drift was t0o fast and water two dirty. At the end of the comp Neil had one fish and won a trophy for the top English Angler - his first trophy ever in 32 years of com-petitive fishing. Well done Neil. I blanked over the 3 days along with many others.

The fish were there. Three Belgians we know had been out on the Thursday and had 40 cod between them and on the last day one of the Irish team had an estimated (by the skipper) 35 kilo cod to the surface twice in a battle that lasted nearly an hour be-fore his trace broke (bit through). This cod had taken 20 inches of trace line down above his lure. This fish was over 5ft long and the biggest the crew had ever seen - and they work commercially as well.

Although I did not catch I did enjoy the event and will be back next year. For those that are interested, the dates are January 18,19 and 20th.

English Boat Championship Minehead 2-3 rd June 2007

This year we make a welcome return to Minehead for our Boat Championship. Those of you that fished here before know it is a big fish venue with quality Tope, Conger, Bull Huss and Rays along with many other species.

We are negotiating with a new HQ hotel which has better facilities and no music blar-ing out to 4am. This information will be on your confirmation of entry.

The tackle shop on the Quay will be open for bait orders and will be open before the boat departure time. Again, details on the conformation of entry.

The conformation of entries will not be posted out until the first week of March. Please enter before close of Entry date as we cannot hold boats back.

EFSA Sweden HFK LUPUS Summer Cod Festival Helsingborg 29 – 30 June 2007

This year’s Cod Festival will take place on the above dates. Those of you that have not been before and wish to experience the Swedish hospitality and some great fishing - this is the place.

Last year, 12 of us went and basked in 30c sunshine, drank lots of beer, ate great food, partied with the Swedes, saw the sites and, oh, and the fishing was good too.

We are beginning to master this pirking game and I’m sure we are going to have an angler in the top three soon.

The flights are very cheap to with Stirling flying to Copenhagen from Gatwickand a short train journey to Helsingborg.

Special rates have also been agreed with the Marina Plaza Hotel. Details are on the entry form.

Anyone going please leave some room in your luggage as Bryn Roberts has still to bring ¾ Tonne of wood flooring back to the UK which he won in last years raffle!
