Common Health Issues in Newborns
Presented by MediFee
Every parent wonders about the health of their newborn, especially when it is the first baby. Your baby will have many needs. Common health issues revolve around allergies, infections, rashes, colds, diarrhea and constipation.
Diarrhea
Pay attention to the consistency of the stool while changing diapers. It is normal for breastfed babies to have slightly watery stools.
Constipation
Your baby may be suffering from constipation if his/her face looks strained while trying to pass stool. The stool also tends to be dry, hard and may cause pain and bleeding while being expelled.
Vomiting
Vomiting may accompany diarrhea or may occur alone. This is usually a sign of stomach infection or a reaction to something your baby ate.
Infections
Newborn babies are susceptible to infections and catch them very fast as their immune systems are not fully developed yet. However, they do respond to treatment well and fast. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. Your baby should be breastfed as much as possible as this will help them build up their immune levels which can help them fight infections.
Fever
A fever is also a sign of an underlying infection. If your baby has a fever, then it is a sign that an infection is being fought. Take the temperature of the baby either rectally or in the armpit. If the temperature is slightly above the normal range, 38 degrees Celsius, then bring your baby to the doctor. Do not attempt to treat your baby by yourself.
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or crib death is an unfortunate situation where the infant who is less than a year old passes away without any explainable causes. To reduce risk, allow your baby to sleep on the back, even for naps on a firm mattress. Remove all stuffed toys and fluffy clothing. Most important, keep the head are uncovered when your baby is sleeping, especially the nose and mouth area.
