BBB is a private, nonprofit organization that provides services and pro-grams to assist businesses, consumers, donors and charities. The fo-

cus of the BBB’s activities is to promote an ethical marketplace by encouraging honest advertising and selling practices, effective dispute resolution and charity accountability. The services and programs offered by your BBB help you be a more informed, knowledgeable, satisfied consumer and help businesses grow in an ever-changing competitive marketplace.

BBB was established in 1912 with BBB Denver/Boulder opening in 1951. Today there are 112 BBBs across the nation and Canada representing more than 400,000 BBB Accredited Businesses and serving millions of consumers and other com-panies. BBB Denver/Boulder offers services and outreach initiatives throughout a 12-county metro service area. Having more than 100 years of strength in its brand, BBB continues to be competitive and relevant by offering educational programs and services in the ever-changing global marketplace.

As a consumer, why should you use BBB Denver/Boulder?

Business Reviews and Charity ReportsOne of BBB’s primary functions is to provide free, unbiased BBB Business Re-

views and Charity Reports. We encourage the public to contact us before doing business with a company or donating to a charity. BBB Denver/Boulder maintains approximately 72,000 BBB Business Reviews on area businesses. The reviews offer basic background information as well as a company’s rating, complaint history, and advertising concerns. You can also get lists of BBB Accredited Businesses by indus-try category, and even request quotes directly from our website. You can request a quote from any individual BBB Accredited Business Review and this service is free. Visit www.findacompany.org to find a BBB Accredited business or charity, or visit www.denver.bbb.org to get a BBB Business Review on any business or charity.

Customer ReviewsBBB now offers a Customer Review program. Adding to the many free services the BBB offers, BBB Customer Reviews give consumers the opportunity to post a ‘verified-for-authenticity’ review. BBB Denver/Boulder was one of the first BBBs in the nation to unveil this unique platform. BBB Customer Reviews give further

insight into a company’s behavior and are processed by the BBB staff to en-sure validity. This program allows the customer to post a positive review on a business, and the business can promptly respond to the review to help build customer satisfaction and continued engagement.Dispute Resolution

By providing BBB Business Reviews and BBB Charity Reports to the public, we hope to assist with resolution in all sectors of the marketplace. Unfor-tunately, problems still occur, which create a demand for dispute resolution services. BBB’s general complaint services are free to the public. BBB acts as a neutral third party to facilitate communications between the complainant and the organization that received the complaint, showing the ethical busi-ness practices that Accredited Businesses deploy. We are proud that a large number of our BBB Accredited Businesses make a reasonable good-faith ef-fort to resolve issues.

Other dispute resolution services consist of mediation or arbitration. The BBB facilitates these hearings and uses professional mediators and arbitrators who volunteer their services. Fees range from $150-$500. Either service is offered to individuals 59+ years of age at a flat fee of $25.

Advertising ReviewBBB’s roots are in assisting businesses in self-regulation in their advertis-

ing. Within this program, BBB regularly reviews local advertising to be sure it is truthful and not misleading to the consumer by using the BBB Code of Advertising as our guide. These guidelines mirror Federal Trade Commission laws and rules.

BBB - Your Local ExpertBBB Serving Denver/Boulder is a respected voice in the media, delivering

messaging to both the business and consumer base. News media regularly seek the BBB’s expert advice on businesses, charities, scams and general informa-tion for consumers. Your BBB reaches the population through regular appear-ances on local television, radio, print media, Web and social media. We further our outreach efforts by producing and participating in community events, and speaking to many demographics about issues that directly affect them. U

BBB ACCREDITATION

We’ve all had to make decisions when it comes to choosing a business to help us remodel, repair the plumbing, re-roof, etc. Even buy-ing tires, picking a pet sitter, or selecting

a dentist requires doing some homework. How do you know who is reliable, who conducts business fairly and who has your best interests at heart?

For more than 100 years, the Better Business Bureau has provided the public with services to help encour-age trustworthy relationships with businesses. BBB Ac-credited Businesses are companies that have met and formally agreed to maintain BBB standards of ethical business practices. BBB Accredited Businesses pay a fee for accreditation review and monitoring, and to support services the BBB provides to the public for free. BBB Ac-creditation is earned and monitored, not simply bought. Every BBB Accredited Business must apply for accredita-tion, meet and agree to maintain the eight BBB Standards for Trust and then be approved.

Businesses join the BBB for many reasons. Because the BBB name is one of the most trusted and well known na-tionwide, businesses recognize its credibility and strive to align with and support the BBB. Businesses also choose to be accredited to support the BBB's efforts to create a fair, trustworthy community of businesses that uphold BBB standards. Every year the BBB revokes accredita-tions for violation of standards.

These eight standards help the entire marketplace by holding businesses accountable to the following:

n BUILD TRUST by establishing and maintaining a posi-tive track record in the marketplace. n ADVERTISE HONESTLY by adhering to established standards of advertising and selling. n TELL THE TRUTH by honestly representing products and services, including clear and adequate disclosures of all material terms.

What it means to YOU!

n BE TRANSPARENT by openly identifying the business’s na-ture, location and ownership, and clearly disclosing all its poli-cies, guarantees and procedures. n HONOR PROMISES through abiding by all written and oral agreements.n BE RESPONSIVE by addressing marketplace disputes quickly, professionally and in good faith.n SAFEGUARD PRIVACY by protecting any collected data against mishandling and fraud, collecting personal information only as necessary, and respecting consumers’ preferences re-garding the use of their information. n EMBODY INTEGRITY by approaching all business dealings, marketplace transactions and commitments with integrity. The BBB Code of Business Practices details each Standard for Trust and every company that applies for BBB Accreditation is rigorously reviewed against these principles before it is ap-proved. Visit www.denver.bbb.org/codeofbusinesspractices for more details about the BBB Standards for Trust.

All BBB public services exist to foster a fair playing field for the entire marketplace, and BBB Accredited Businesses want to help support those efforts, along with fairness and accountabil-ity among their competitors. By advertising their BBB Accredi-tation, businesses let customers and potential customers know they can be trusted to do the right thing.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT BBB ACCREDITATIONn BBB Accreditation does not mean that the business’s prod-ucts or services have been evaluated or endorsed by the BBB, or that the BBB has made a determination as to the business’s product quality or competency in performing services.n Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB Accredita-tion. Some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB Accreditation or do not qualify.n The general public sometimes assumes the BBB only reports and accepts complaints on BBB Accredited Businesses. This is not true. Your local BBB maintains approximately 72,000 files on businesses and charities, of which nearly 8,000 are BBB Ac-credited. We also accept and report complaints against any business within our 12-county service area.n BBB Standards for Trust are not applied only to BBB Accredited businesses, but to all businesses. We hold the entire marketplace to the same ethical standards. The only difference with BBB Ac-credited Businesses is we have determined they meet these stan-dards and when they join, they formally agree to maintain them.

TO QUALIFY FOR BBB ACCREDITATION A BUSINESS MUST:n Be operating at least one year, or have owned a previous

business in the same industry for at least one year.n Be free of any major government action.n Have zero unanswered or unresolved BBB complaints.n Have at least a B rating with the BBB.n Meet all other standards outlined in the BBB Code of Business

Practices. U

LANDSCAPING

Page 21: Community Guide - Summer 2014

Feature: PathwaysSkimp or Splurge? SkimpWhy: Pathways simply need to be func-tional. Pea gravel, crusher fines, mulch and concrete pavers are all fairly cheap materials that make suitable pathways, and it’s easy to upgrade them in the fu-ture if you wish. But splurge on front-yard pathways for curb appeal.

Outdoor Space

Whether you’re starting a landscape from scratch, overhauling an existing one, or simply adding a few new features, setting a budget is a crucial first step. But how do you know where to allo-cate your dollars? We asked

local landscape designers,

architects and contractors

to devise a list of landscape

features and whether you

should “skimp” or “splurge”

in those areas. Here’s their

advice:

20 Building a Better Community

Landscape Feature: PlantsSkimp or Splurge? Skimp on size; Splurge on qualityWhy: The health and appearance of a plant are the most important things to look for—and the highest-priced plants aren’t neces-sarily the highest quality, so shop around.

Choose smaller plants for extra savings, like a 4-inch pot instead of a gallon container. You may lose a few seasons of growth, but the plant will make up for it in time. Se-lect plants suited to Colorado’s USDA Hardiness Zone and climate, or you’ll spend extra time and money replacing plants that don’t make it.

Landscape Feature: Trees and BushesSkimp or Splurge? Skimp on size; Splurge on qualityWhy: Choose trees and bushes grown lo-cally or regionally because they’ll be better adapted to our harsh climate, poor soils and drought challenges.

It’s not necessary to purchase the largest tree at the nurs-ery, however. Smaller-caliper trees tend to acclimate more easily and catch up with larger-caliper trees. If planted properly, staked, irrigated adequately and pruned cor-rectly, trees will pay off handsomely in a landscape for years to come.

Landscape Feature: Mulch and Soil AmendmentsSkimp or Splurge? Splurge Why: The proper soil amendments can break up heavy soils, create proper condi-tions for plants to get established, and allow for better nutrient uptake and soil reten-

tion, thus decreasing water needs over time. But formulas are highly inconsistent, so you might need to splurge to make sure you’re getting a quality product that doesn’t contain detrimental fillers like salt. As for ground-cover mulch, splurge if the site is exposed to the elements. You don’t want your mulch to end up in your neighbor’s yard on a windy day, which it could do if it’s the cheaper, light-er kind.

Feature: Decks and PatiosSkimp or Splurge? SplurgeWhy: With more than 300 days of sun-shine a year in Colorado, why wouldn’t we splurge on an outdoor living room? For decking, composite or plastic materials cost more than wood but save money in

the long run because little maintenance is needed. For patios, concrete that’s properly reinforced is much less likely to crack and will last longer. And because high-qual-ity stone is readily available here, it’s often similar in price to poured concrete—and it’s prettier. The outdoor living space is generally the most expensive part of a landscape project, but it also retains value the best.

Feature: IrrigationSkimp or Splurge? SplurgeWhy: Generally speaking, don’t hire the person with the lowest quote. Instead, look for solid referrals. Features like an underground drip system, soil sensors and a quality timer cost a little more up front,

but save in the long run by not wasting water. The new-est generation of smart controllers let you know how of-ten to water, based on humidity, wind, and soil temps and moisture.

Feature: Fountains and Other Water FeaturesSkimp or Splurge? Skimp (definitely!)Why: You don’t need a grandiose waterfall or flowing creek to make an impact on your landscape. Even a small boulder with water cascading into a small pool, or a prepack-aged tabletop fountain, can create a sense

of peace. Large water features are almost always a bad in-vestment, because they don’t retain any resale value, they may require costly maintenance, they’re hard to clean and they often waste water. If you absolutely must have a wa-ter feature, a small, prepackaged, self-contained fountain will provide the soothing effect of water without the has-sle or cost. Smaller is also preferable if your goal is to at-tract birds. They prefer smaller, shallower basins to drink from and bathe in.

Feature: LightingSkimp or Splurge? Splurge on quality; Skimp on quantityWhy: You don’t need a lot of lights in your landscape, and city/county ordinances gen-erally prohibit overdoing lighting. But lights for security and safety, to highlight land-

scape features, or to illuminate an outdoor living room should be high-quality LED or photocell systems that will last. A professional can help you determine where you need lighting and what kind you need. If you’re lighting a path, there are numerous low-cost LED options that are so-lar and don’t require a timer. But if you’re lighting a yard for ambience and parties, invest in a higher-powered system.

Feature: Landscape Designer/ContractorSkimp or Splurge? SplurgeWhy: An experienced landscape designer is crucial for helping you determine what you really need—and don’t—in your landscape. Professionals know others in the industry and can often purchase supplies at a discount.

They also know the best cost-cutting measures and how to avoid costly mistakes. Start your search for a professional by calling the BBB or visiting its online directory of BBB Accredited Businesses at www.findacompany.org. You can request bids from any BBB Accredited contractor by click-ing on “Request a Quote.” Also, talk to friends, family and business associates for referrals, and meet with all pros-pects in person before deciding. Summertime

Travel TipsS ummer in Colorado—doesn’t it always seem to go by too quickly? Many look

forward to summer vacations as part of their season plans, because with

school being out, it’s prime time for families and college students to get away.

Vacation travel is also big business. According to the U.S. Travel Association,

direct spending on leisure travel by domestic and international travelers to-

taled more than $621 billion in 2013.

Vacationing is a must, but we all know that planning and other parts of the process can be stressful. The Better Business Bureau offers many tips on how to ease stress and avoid getting ripped off. Please remember the following tips when booking and leaving for your trip: Book with a company you are familiar with and trust. Find BBB Accredited travel companies, hotels, etc., by visiting www.findacompany.org or by checking BBB Business Reviews at www.denver.bbb.org, or by calling 303-758-2100.

• Be cautious of special “summer deals” advertised by unknown companies. Sometimes these offers (found in emails, online, faxes, mailers, etc.) may not even be from real companies. They may be scammers trying to get your credit card number or other information.

• Use a credit card to pay for the trip so you can dis-pute the charges should something go wrong. Not-so-reputable companies tend to get complaints about incor-rect bookings and not disclosing all of the information the traveler needs to know about their flight, hotel or other important parts of the trip for which they’ve paid.

• Make sure you understand any and all extra fees that may be incurred on your trip.

• Consider trip insurance. It may be necessary if you are traveling to an area that may see severe weather. Other situations that travel insurance can protect against are usu-ally unforeseen, such as injury, illness and sudden closures.

• If you are traveling internationally, be sure to check www.travel.state.gov for travel warnings. This govern-ment website gives a list of countries where long-term, protracted conditions make a country dangerous or un-stable to visit. A travel warning is also issued when the U.S. Government’s ability to assist American citizens is constrained due to the closure of an embassy or consul-ate, or because of a drawdown of its staff.

• Create an emergency contact list. Write down impor-tant numbers you might need during your trip or in an emergency, including family members, friends, towing companies and hotels. Also, give a few close family mem-bers all of your trip information so they know how to con-tact you in case an emergency occurs back home.

• Don’t announce your trip on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. If this information gets into the wrong hands, you could come home from your trip only to find your home has been burglarized.

Modern ResourcesBefore you book your trip, the volume of information

available to help you make your decision might seem overwhelming. Between online reviews, deeply discount-ed packages on deal websites, countless enticing photos, and price comparison websites and apps—it can be dif-ficult to narrow your choices or know what to trust.First, if you’re like a large part of the consumer population that consults online reviews before making a purchase, the BBB has good news for you. In January 2014, the BBB of Denver/Boulder launched its Customer Re-view program that provides an online forum for consumers to submit reviews—positive or nega-tive—about their experiences with businesses. When you’re not sure what to trust when reading re-views to help you with your travel choices, turn to the BBB, because its reviews are verified to be from actual customers before they are published.

When it comes to deeply discounted vacation pack-ages from sites like Groupon, Living Social, etc., be sure to get all of the details as far as blackout dates and other terms that could negatively affect your trip. Also under-stand all other terms of the deal, especially regarding cancellations.

For the convenience of the traveler, most travel com-panies now have mobile apps that help with planning, or-ganization and last-minute changes. Be sure to only use apps from trusted travel firms, and if you’re doing busi-ness on the app that exposes personal or financial infor-mation, make sure your mobile device has updated and sufficient security to protect you from cybercrimes. It’s summer, and just like people, insects are out

in full force. But don’t assume every creepy-

crawly is up to no good. Although more than

28 Building a Better Community

We all know beneficial insects like bees and butterflies are in trouble. Many reports confirm rampant pesticide and herbicide use as the culprit. Here are some strategies to help you prevent applying chemicals to your lawn and garden.

• Inspect nursery plants to see if they are free from insects and disease. Don’t bring insect problems home with you.

• Fertilize properly to enable plants to outgrow insect at-tacks.

• Keep the garden free of weeds and stray grass.

• Rotate crops. Don’t plant the same varieties of flow-ers or vegetables in the same spots year after year.

• Rake, remove and destroy all plant debris after the growing season.

• Avoid excessive or unnecessary use of pesticides that kill beneficial insects as well as pests. Think of this tongue twister: Pesticides kill pests, other living creatures that eat the poisoned pests, and larger creatures that eat the creatures that have eaten the poisoned pests.

• Take time to learn and make use of natural repellents. For example, planting marigolds around asparagus wards off the asparagus beetle; beds of rosemary and thyme keep cabbage worms away from the cabbage patch.

• Reduce the mosquito population by draining all places where stagnant water stands. Mosquitoes can multiply in a spot as small as a discarded tin can.

• Spray aphid-infested houseplants with soap-and-water solutions rather than insecticide. Use a strong jet of wa-ter to knock aphids off of outdoor plants.

• Before declar-ing war on garden pests, see if you can restore the natural balance. For example, every day of their lives, ladybug beetles eat twice their weight in aphids, mealy-bugs, moth eggs, spider mites and scale insects. Some companies raise and sell pest predators and pathogens that cause fatal diseases in unwanted species. Some of these firms are legitimate sources of ladybugs, praying mantises and other beneficial creatures. But mail-order pest control is risky. Something advertised as a “Fool-proof Natural Method for Killing Pests” may turn out to be two blocks of wood with instructions to place an in-sect on one block and hit it with the other. Do sufficient research before making any online purchase.

• Make use of the wide variety of booklets published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s extensive series of home and garden pest-control leaflets and bulletins de-tailing how to eradicate hundreds of specific pests. Get them at your library or contact the local Cooperative Extension Service (www.ext.colostate.edu).

• Sometimes it’s necessary to call in a pest-control com-pany. Before you do, check around for a reliable com-pany, otherwise you may wind up with self-styled exter-minators who are pests themselves!

• Federal law requires commercial applicators of “restricted-use” products to be certified. The certification program is left up to the state. Colorado homeowners can call the Environmental Protection Agency for information.

• Be wary of uninvited companies offering free pest in-spections of your home. Always deal with a licensed exterminator, and ask friends and neighbors for recom-mendations of companies they’ve used successfully.

• Check prospective choices with the Better Business Bu-reau. Homeowners can find BBB Accredited pest-con-trol companies at www.findacompany.org, and also get free bids by using the BBB’s Request-A-Quote service.

Follow these tips and you should enjoy your garden more than any potential pests this season. U

Wobbly porch steps, grungy grout. That new play structure that never got assembled. A few torn screens, just when bug season is beginning. The raised garden

beds you never get around to building. Almost all of us have some home repairs or improve-ments we don’t quite have the skills, the tools or the time to do ourselves.

When the project doesn’t seem big enough to require a contractor, a handyman is the per-fect choice for the job. In Colorado, a handyman cannot legally undertake major jobs such as re-wiring a house or adding a bathroom, as these jobs require electricians and plumbers who are licensed by the state to protect both consumers and the infrastructure. A reputable handyman will tell you this. Handymen can, however, add insulation to your home, power-wash and stain a deck, repair and clean gutters, and perform scores of other important jobs.

Follow these tips when searching for a reliable handyman to hire. (And remember: some excel-lent “handymen” are women!)

Ask Around. Ask friends, family members and neighbors to recommend a reputable handyman they have used in the past. Find BBB Accredited Businesses at www.findacompany.org, where you can even request quotes for free directly from the site.

Make a List of Needs. Draw up a list of exactly what projects you want done. When selecting a candidate, be sure to ask about their range of skills and if they specialize in a particular type of work such as carpentry, tiling, painting or yard maintenance. Discuss your list in detail with each handyman you are considering to make sure he or she has previous experience completing similar jobs. P

Interview at Least Three Handymen. Ask each candidate how many years of experience they have. Request an estimate of time and materials costs from each person. Talk about the materials you’ll need, and who will procure them if they are not widely available—like an exotic kind of wood or stone, an unusual knob or an indi-vidually mixed paint color. Ask each handyman for local references you may contact to find out if they were satisfied with the completed projects, if the work was finished on schedule and if they would use the handyman again. If possible, visit the previous custom-ers’ homes to check out the completed projects in person.

Check Credentials. The state of Colorado does not require handymen to be licensed, though some workers choose to have business licenses. Ask for proof that the handyman carries liability insurance, to be sure you’ll be protected in case of an accident on your property. Find out if your proj-ect requires a permit and/or inspection, and if the handy-man will be able to obtain the permit for you. (Especially if your project is a large one, you may want to check this in advance with your county government.)

Discuss Payment. The handyman you hire could charge in a variety of differ-ent ways—by the hour, by the job, or according to other criteria such as dif-ficulty and risk. Once you’ve reached an agreement, set up a payment schedule before they start working on your house. Do not pay the entire cost of the job up front. Pay only according to the work schedule.

Get Everything in Writing. Require the handyman to provide a contract that in-cludes the start and completion dates,

details of each job, and the payment schedule. Ask if the handyman will guarantee his or her work. If so, be sure the guarantee is included in the written agreement. Be-fore making the final payment, inspect the completed job to be sure it’s done to your satisfaction.

Beware of Scams. Don’t trust handymen who solicit door-to-door or claim they have material left over from their last job. Walk away from any handyman who de-mands to be paid before the job is completed. Be wary of handymen that pressure you into a decision, only want to be paid in cash, or ask you to obtain a permit for them. U

BY MEGAN HERRERA, BBB OF DENVER/BOULDER

What will become of this next generation? Who will be the next to change an entire industry, lead their community or build a lasting legacy? These questions fuel the imagination and drive of the BBB Foundation, the 501 (c)(3) nonprofit philanthropic arm of the BBB Denver/

Boulder. In 2014, the Foundation has become intently focused on our community’s youth and how its programs can shape their futures.

Continuing the Foundation’s efforts to educate Colorado’s future consumers and business leaders, it is formalizing curriculum to be implemented into partner programs with organizations such as the Denver Scholarship Foundation, University of Denver, Adams County Schools, Denver Public Schools and more. The curriculums are Business Leaders of Tomorrow, which teaches business ethics and Online Safety, which teaches safe and ethical digital practices.

The BBB Foundation’s Student of Integrity Scholarship program provides opportunities for students who are eco-nomically disadvantaged to have a road to success. The college-scholarship program will expand greatly in 2014 and plans to offer $50,000 in scholarships, compared to $17,500 awarded in 2013. Scholarship awards will range from $500 to $10,000 per student and some of the new scholarships will be industry-specific. All scholarship recipients will be hon-ored at the BBB Foundation’s prestigious Torch Awards for Marketplace Trust luncheon slated for fall 2014. U IL
