Session acts to help keep families safe
New Safe Church Policy Adopted
It is a lamentable fact of life that it is necessary in
our day to have policies in place to protect children
and youth from sexual misconduct. The General
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) has
asked all congregations, Presbyteries, Synods and
Presbyterian ministries to write, adopt, and
implement policies and procedures to provide
protection and to outline steps to be taken if
misconduct is suspected or encountered. While in
the process of developing a new comprehensive Safe Church policy for our
congregation, we were notified by our insurance carrier earlier this summer
that such a policy will also now be required to renew our insurance policy.
Thus, Session, at its June meeting, approved our new Safe Church policy.
The policy includes some common sense procedures, such as requiring that
there be two adults (or one adult and one teen) present whenever we provide
nursery care, Sunday School classes, youth group activities, etc. – and that
those adults and teens have had a simple background check and training about
our policy.
Current Safe Church standards are requiring that rooms used for activities for
children/teens or counseling have a glass panel in the door or the door is left
open. The Property Committee has ordered and will have a new door installed
on each of the Peanut Butter Nursery classrooms and the Pastor’s Office by
Labor Day. The Nursery already has a ‘Dutch door’ which allows the top to
be left open or ajar with the bottom closed when it is being used. We
encourage you to read the complete policy which is on our church website:
http://www.robinsonelmwood.com/safe-church.html.

COMMUNITY LIFE
Thank you, thank you, thank you to each member
and friend of Robinson Elmwood and of Fairmount
Community Church who have contributed to our
Capital Campaign. As you know we need
approximately $45,000 to renovate the bathrooms
across from the center entrance to our building so
that they can be used by people who use walkers,
wheelchairs and/or need assistance with privacy. As
articles for the newsletter were being prepared, we
are almost halfway to our goal - and work is
scheduled to begin the week of August 1.

Ways to participate:
Write a check, note “Handicap Access” on the memo line and either
place it in the offering plate or send it to the church office.
Make an online donation through Vanco on our church website check-
ing “Handicap Access” (www.robinsonelmwood.com).
See if there is a place in your budget to make monthly or quarterly do-
nations over a longer period of time.
If you are age 70 ½ or older, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 al-
lows you to make an IRA Charitable Rollover directly transferring up
to $100,000 per year from an IRA account to one or more charities.
This transfer counts toward the minimum required distribution rule for
IRA accounts, and such distributions are free of both income and es-
tate taxes (plannedgiving.com). If you would like to consider a Chari-
table Rollover for our Handicap Access projects, please check with
your financial advisor to see if this would be a good financial decision
for you.
Let our Chair of Finance, Dave Valenza, or Treasurer, Charlie Brown,
know that you can pledge a particular amount which you will be able
to pay by the end of the year.
All monies donated first will all go toward Phase 1. Donations received
after Phase I has been paid for will be designated for Phase 2 which will
be to install a lift or lifts so that all portions of our facility are handicap
accessible. It is our prayer that we will receive sufficient donations to
begin the planning work for a lift early in 2019. It is estimated that prepar-
ing for and installing one lift in the sanctuary side of the building will cost
between $100,000 - $200,000 dollars because of the building renovation
that will be needed.
No one of us can probably pay to make this all happen – but combin-
ing donations small and large, TOGETHER WE CAN! Please prayer -
fully consider to what level you may be able to participate.

AUGUST FUND
The August Fund will support Food Bank of CNY which serves as the main food distribution hub for hundreds of regional food banks.
COMMUNION FUND
Missio Church benefits from non-perishable food items and communion donations on the first Sunday of every month. They are taking over the food pantry from Isaiah’s Table. Remember: On August 6 bring a bag and grab a bag!
BLESSINGS IN A
BACKPACK
Blessings in a Backpack is a national campaign to assist with feeding needy school children on the weekends. Our local program through Bellevue Heights UMC is partnered with the Delaware School on South Geddes St. Just $100 will feed a child on the weekends for the entire school year, but any donation is gladly accepted. You can also help pack the food delivered to the school!
KINYAMESEKE WELL
The Mission Committee will be matching donations up to $3,500 for any donations toward digging a new well in Kinyameseke. Mark your donations “Uganda Well” wither in a pew envelope, or online.
The Mission Committee will keep the congregation updated on our mission
work, and to offer opportunities for anyone to pitch in and help those who are
homeless, hungry or in need. The Mission Committee is seeking balance in
providing hands-on or monetary assistance to local and non-local missions.
We are a fired-up, dynamic committee and hold meetings each month. We
welcome new members anytime!

COMMUNITY LIFE
One More Pew Still to Fill with TP!
There’s Still Another Choir Pew to Fill
with Toilet Paper! Because of our
generous members and folks from Fairmount
the “men’s” pew in our choir loft is now
pretty well filled with toilet paper which
will, when the choir returns in early
September, be delivered to: Isaiah’s Table
Food Pantry, Sarah’s Guest House and
Exodus 3 Ministries (their joy when they
received last year’s donation is obvious from
this photo). For those who find it difficult to
put enough food on the table with help from
SNAP (Food Stamps), it is even more
difficult to purchase toilet paper since they
can’t use food stamps for hygiene product.
So, let’s clip coupons. Watch for bargains.
Bring in one roll or bulk multi-roll packages.
We’d like to get the middle “alto” pew filled
to overflowing, too!
Uganda “Wellness” Project
Kinyameseke, the village that we help support
in Uganda, is celebrating the drilling of the
village’s very first well, but is also in dire need
of a second well for those who live on the other
side of the village. They have suffered through
a long drought, and the people there are
contracting waterborne illnesses at an alarming
rate.
We can help them by raising money to drill a
new well. The Mission Committee has pledged
to match donations up to the $3,500 for the cost
of the new well. You can donate with a pew
envelope, or online on our webpage. Just mark
your designation as “Uganda Well.” Thank you
in advance for your generous support.

Robinson Elmwood is proud to be a member of the Westvale, Fairmount,
Geddes, Solvay, and Camillus neighborhoods. While everyone is welcome to
drop in to our regular worship on Sundays at 11:00, we recognize that people
go to different churches or even choose not to go at all.
The following programs are open to anyone regardless if you attend services
here (or anywhere) regularly. Stop in for one of our lunches and make a few
new friends, or take up quilting if you’re looking for a new hobby. All are
welcome.

justice. Food and music will be provided. Sentinel is performing as well as
other musical groups. There will be a free will offering with proceeds

Jim Gifford was a member of Elmwood Presbyterian Church. He was
senselessly beaten on 9/21/2013 in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven near his
home where he had gone to get a newspaper and coffee. He died of his
injuries four days later. This annual event is a tribute to his legacy.

sticks, 24 pack crayons, and
children's scissors.
Fairmount will also welcome
folks who would like to cover the

students are required to have for
When active church member and retired
teacher Olive Havens passed away in 1968,
she bequeathed her home on Terry Road to
Robinson Memorial. In her will she stipulated
that money from the sale and any investment
income be used to assist active church
members who find it especially difficult to
pay medical and hospital bills to pay some of
those bills.
In July the Session received a request from an
active church member who was finding it
very difficult to pay off several accumulated
hospital and medical bills. We were able to
provide a grant from the Havens’ Fund to
help that member with payment.

Our Ushers and Liturgists who

Fran Hunter and Darren Piper
for each providing special music
on one of our summer Sundays.
It is very hard for me to believe that it has been
almost two years since Tracie retired and I arrived to
spend a period of transition time, probably, I said,
about two years with you. “Two years?” I heard
people exclaim in amazement. “It will take that long
to get our next installed pastor?” As I like to remind
Pastor Nominating Committees and congregations:
getting “A” pastor can be done very quickly. Giving
God time to bring forth just the “RIGHT” pastor can
take time, not to mention the time it takes for a
congregation to do the thoughtful and good work you
all did to provide the PNC with information about
who Robinson Elmwood really is and the kind of
pastor you all feel you need.
As Janet Brown, PNC Chair, announced a couple of weeks ago, the PNC has
worked their way through a large initial batch of pastor information forms
without a match between whom they thought might be best and pastors who
felt called to come to this part of the world. They have been meeting more
than once a week to review many new pastor information forms that have
arrived and keep arriving from pastors more particularly interested in this
church. Has “the right” pastor decided yet to heed God’s summons and send
their information form – or is God still working to convince that pastor that it
is time to leave where they are? The answer to that question only time will
tell. But I can attest that God has been very busy where summoning is
concerned.
I like to lovingly hand over each congregation I serve to their next installed
pastor, but I also let Interim Pastor Search Committees and Sessions know
that while I won’t go out looking for a new position until their new pastor is
found, if a congregation has completed their transition work and has a well-
functioning PNC and I am contacted by a Presbytery Leader to consider going
to a church that needs my particular experience and expertise, I need to
prayerfully consider whether this is God’s call. That very unexpectedly
happened to me a couple of weeks ago. And so, with much joy in my heart
from our time together yet great sadness that our time is drawing to a close, I
will be transitioning at the end of September to start a new position outside of
Rochester at the beginning of October. We still have two more months
together and a lot of loose ends to tie up, but please keep me in prayer for this
upcoming change as I do you.
What will happen between my leave-taking and the arrival of your new
installed pastor? Everything will go on as usual. You have a very strong
Session and Board of Deacons, extremely capable committees and committee
chairs, Office Administrator and Music Director. Session is working with the
Presbytery’s Ministry Work Group to ensure that you will have someone to
moderate the Session and be available should there be a need for crisis
visitation or a funeral. Your continued participation and support will provide a
very welcoming place for your new pastor, when identified, to do great
ministry with you.
