School’s Out for Summer

School is finally out, and the sunshine is here – that’s right, it’s finally summer time. It’s that time of year where we no longer have to stress about classwork or tests. We’ve been looking forward to it all year and now summer has finally arrived. It’s good to take time to relax after the long school year before the new one approaches. I hope you all have had a good start to summer break! With the new year, comes new Key Club members joining in the fall. This summer is about making new memories through club service with fellow club members, and including the new ones. I am excited to see what this summer will bring and to be capturing it all and to meet the incoming freshman members that attend the summer events.

Coronado Key Club’s Bulletin Editor 2015-16,

Freshman Festival When: Thursday, May 14th Where: Coronado High School

What: Coronado Key Club board members attended the Freshman Festival in order to recruit possible new members for the upcoming the year. The table included a trifold with club dates and facts, a club shirt, pamphlets, and sign-up sheets.

After an introduction in the gym, students and their families poured out into the quad to hear about the variety of clubs Coronado has to offer. President Rosie Benito-Dumo discussed both the short and long term benefits of being in Key Club to intrigued eighth graders who signed up.

A total of 31 incoming freshmen signed up throughout the event. Our club has events over the summer that they are able to attend to learn more about what Key Club is and does.

Ice Cream Social When: Wednesday, May 20th Where: Coronado High School

What: Coronado’s Student Council hosted an Ice Cream Social for all of the clubs. Only a few attended, including Key Club. Members created their own sundaes from a variety of toppings and flavors and enjoyed them while watching Frozen.

The event was a good way for members to meet each other and people from other service clubs while bonding over ice cream and Disney movies.

“My favorite part of the Ice Cream Social was seeing all the other clubs, talking with friends, and of course, the ice cream!”

May DCM When: Wednesday, May 27th Where: Coronado High School What: Key Club board members from the

clubs in Division 28 South met at the May DCM at Coronado High school to discuss service events. The meeting was led by the LTG Sofia Yahya, and began with the club Presidents sharing their past and upcoming events. Members played a few icebreakers in the courtyard to know each other better, and then we went back inside to continue the meeting. The Division Leadership Team was also announced for this year at the DCM. The Division News Editor was Ky Guerrero and Alex Jo was announced as the Executive Assistant. After they were revealed, Sofia shared a PowerPoint about Membership Recruitment and keeping members for the upcoming year.

After the meeting concluded, board members went back into the courtyard to enjoy some nachos provided from Coronado. Members from other Key Clubs socialized with each other and met others of the same position. It was a fun final DCM before the summer, and I enjoyed meeting other Bulletin Editors from clubs across Vegas.

Teaching Garden When: Saturday, May 30th Where: Coronado High School What: Coronado Key Club members

volunteered at the on-campus garden, alongside another college volunteer program and teachers. When we arrived, we started by painting the stems of trees and covering the soil to keep them from burning during the summer heat. Afterwards, we grabbed rakes and began raking large piles of mulch to spread out over the entire dirt area. While raking, members found rabbits in one of the piles and the teachers took care of them in the shade. The raking was a tiresome, but fun task. Before we knew it, we finished and took a food/water break. The last task was painting the garden wall the school colors – red, white, and blue. I had never painted before so it was a fun experience. Once we finished, we looked at the entire garden that we had helped create. It looked so pretty with all the flowers and newly colored wall. Thank you to Kiwanis for donating some of the trees and plants!

“My favorite part of working at the garden was probably raking the mulch because I like working with nature and the exercise was a good way of releasing some stress.”
