IntroductionThe Indian Premier League (IPL) is a Twenty20 cricket championship league in India. It

was initiated by Lalit Modi and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), after an

altercation between the BCCI and the Indian Cricket League. The league is headquartered in

Mumbai, Maharashtra, and is currently supervised by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla,

who serves as the league's Chairman and Commissioner. It is contested by eight teams as of

2013, consisting of players from around the cricketing world.

The Premier League is generally considered to be the highest-profile showcase in the

world for Twenty20 (T20) cricket, the shortest form of professional cricket with just 20 overs

per innings, but the IPL is perhaps as well known for its commercial success as for the cricket

played - during the sixth IPL season, in 2013, its brand value was estimated to be around

US$2.99 billon. Live rights to the event are syndicated around the globe, and in 2010, the

IPL became the first sporting event to be broadcast live on YouTube. In 2012 the naming

rights for the series was awarded to Pepsi. Two eligible bids were received, with Pepsi

winning over Airtel with a bid of INR396.8 crores. However, the league has been the subject

of several controversies where allegations of cricket betting, money laundering and spot

    fixing were witnessed.

BackgroundIndian Premier League(IPL) was initiated by Board of

Cricket for Control in India(BCCI) under the

entrepreneurship ofMr. Lalit Modi, who introducedglamour & fame in the league after the failure of ICL,which came to an end after its altercation with the

    BCCI.

The Auction was an open auction with each player being individually put

up for bidding by the franchises. The highest bid that was accepted by the

auctioneer was the buyer at that price. There were around 78 players in

the Auctiona combination of Indian national team and foreign

cricketers. Each player has an annual "base player fee". The base player fee

is the fee at which the bidding for that player starts. This base player fee

assumes that the player is available for the entire season of the DLF

Indian Premier League season, including if applicable the Champions

Tournament. This fee was to be adjusted on a pro-rata basis, depending onthe players availability for the DLF IPL season in the later year.
