Course: 7th Grade Math DETAIL LESSON PLAN Tuesday, November 22 / Tuesday, December 6 Student Objective (Obj. 2d) TSW… learn to graph a set of points from a function table, and then identify the shape.
Lesson 10-1 Coordinate Plane Textbook Pages: 486-489 Homework Graphing WS (4 graphs. Determine shape). Semester exam next class. Understand each study guide problem worked in class. Last Night’s Homework Patterns and Functions WS (7 problems multiple choice)
Bellwork Semester Exam Study Guide, problem numbers ________ - _________.
Prior Knowledge
Last time we met, we learned about function tables. Function tables are often referred to as input/output tables… With “x” being the input… and “y” being the output. Anticipatory Set
TODAY, we’ll learn how to graph data from a function on what’s called a coordinate plane. Once we graph the points, we’ll determine the shape of the graph as a Straight line, a U-shape, a V-shape, or an S-shape!
Before we get started…
Let’s do a little “Treasure Hunting!”
Display “Pirates!” (PowerPoint)
Teacher Input
Review Bellwork
Review Homework
Explain the different parts of the “coordinate plane”.
Explain and demonstrate how to name the (x, y) coordinates of a point on the graph.
Explain and demonstrate how to graph a set of points on the coordinate plane.
Explain: To graph a function, you must have a list of ordered pairs. Once graphed the points will form one of these shapes (show transparency): Straight line U-shape V-shape S-shape (curve)
Allow students to work the you-try problem independently.
Classwork: BD 83 & BD 84 (Think, Pair, Share), then GL 36 if time. Extra Practice: Students may begin their homework.
Assessment Question students for understanding. Observation students as they work on their classwork. Assess skill on semester exam.
Closure Beach Ball Math………
What’s the definition of a pirate? Answer: A person who robs at sea.
What was the name of a famous pirate? Blackbeard, Captain Kidd
In which sea did most of the pirate attacks occur? Caribbean Sea
Who discovered the Caribbean Islands? Christopher Columbus
What began piracy? The pirates wanted the gold and silver fond in the New World.
What were the ships called that hauled the gold and silver? Galleons
What was the flag called that the pirates flew on their ships? The Jolly Roger
What trick did the pirates use to attack their enemies? Flew a Spanish flag, then raised the Jolly Roger.
What is the starting point on the Coordinate Plane? Origin
How many Quadrants are there? 4
When naming an Ordered Pair what comes first… the x or the y? the “x”
Student Notes 10-1 Coordinate Plane Textbook 486 - 489
New Vocabulary:
A is formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line
called the x-axis and a vertical number line called the y-axis.
X-Axis Horizontal number line___(line that goes across)_________________
Y-Axis Vertical number line_____(line that goes up and down)_____________
Origin The point where the x-axis and y axis intersect. (Starting Point!) _
Quadrants The coordinate plane is divided into 4 quadrants which are identified
by the Roman Numerals I, II, III, IV._______________________
Ordered Pair Gives the location of a point…… (X, Y)_________________________
Labeling the Coordinate Plane:
What are the coordinates of:
Point J
Step 1: Start at the ORGIN and locate the x-coordinate. -5
Step 2: Locate the y-coordinate. -2
Step 3: Write the points as an ordered pair. J (-5, -2)
You Try! What are the coordinates for Point K? Answer: (____, ____) Quadrant: ____
What are the coordinates for Point L? Answer: (____, ____) Quadrant: ____
Graph point A (3, -5)
Step 1: Start at the ORGIN
Step 2: Move 3 units to the right along the x-axis.
Step 3: Then move 5 units down along the y-axis.
Step 4: Draw a “point” and label it “A”.
You Try! Label Point B (-4, -2) What Quadrant is the point in? _____
Label Point C (3, 6) What Quadrant is the point in? _____
Label Point D (3, 0) Not in a Quadrant because it’s on the _____ axis.
Label Point E (0, 5) Not in a Quadrant because it’s on the _____ axis.

Graph the points in the following function tables. Then, determine the shape of the graph for each function as: straight line, u-shaped, v-shaped, or s-shaped (curved). 1) Shape: _______________ 2) Shape: _______________ 3) Shape: _______________ 4) Shape: _______________
