INTRODUCTION

CSR initiatives have been launched in India since the mid-1990.

Most big Indian corpor ations ar e engaged in some CSR

activities. As in the case of many countr ies, the pr ivate

sector is gener ally mor e active in this ar ea

than the gover nmental/ public sector .

It is also known as corpor ate r es ponsibility, corpor ate

citizenshi p r es ponsible business, sustainable r es ponsible

business , or corpor ate social perfor mance.

CSR ty pically includes issues r elated to business-

ethics, community-investment, environment, gover ance,

human-r ights, the mar ket place & the wor k place.

Concer ned about the car ing the human beings & its society.

Plays signif icant roles in the success & f ailur e of the

business.

Eg: IT com panies like TCS & WIPRO have developedsof twar e to hel p teacher s & childr en in schools across India

to f ur ther the cause of education.

In India,over time, the ex pectations of tge publichas grown enor mously with demands focusing on

pover ty alleviation,tackling unem ployment, f ighting

inequality or for cing com panies to take aff ir mative action.

In India public sector com panies can s pend u p to 5% of

their prof its on CSR activities.

For ms of CSR diff er accor ding to the countr y or r egion.

In India, CSR has evolved to encom pass

em ployees,customer s, stakeholder s & notions of

sustainable development or corpor ate citizenshi p.

Bhar at Petroleum & Mar uti Udyog wer e r anked as the best

com panies in India.

India was r anked 4th in the list, accor ding to social

enterpr ise CSR Asia¶s Asian Sustainability R anking (ASR ),

r eleased in Octo ber 2009.

Mostly CSR activities s pr ead in 20 states & Mahar ashtr a

gaining the most from them.

About 36% of the CSR activities ar e concentr ated in the

state, followed by 12 % in Gujar at, 10 % in Delhi & 9 % in

Tamil nadu.(Industr y Body).

In 2009, the gover nment made it mandator y for all public

sector oil com panies to s pend 2 % of their net prof its on

CSR .
