● Central universities or union universities in India are established by an Act of Parliament and are under the purview of

powers, governance etc., and established 12 new universities. The list of central universities published by the UGC

lists 50 central universities, as of 1 November 2019, nine of which are directly funded by the Government of India and

are not under the purview of the UGC.

● Other types of universities controlled by the UGC include:

● State universities are run by the state government of each of the states and territories of India, and are usually

established by a local legislative assembly act.

● Deemed university, or "Deemed-to-be-University", is a status of autonomy granted by the Department of Higher

Education on the advice of the UGC, under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956.

● Private universities are approved by the UGC. They can grant degrees but they are not allowed to have off-campus

Phool Dei festival begins in Uttarakhand

• “Phool Dei” festival is being celebrated in the

Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand.

• The festival also showcases the inner bonding

between the communities who all are residing in

the hills.

• Phool Dei is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra

or in mid-March (according to the Gregorian

calendar).

• People, especially the children, enjoy the Phool Dei

festival; they delight in the festivity and wake up

early to bring the flowers from the forests to

celebrate the festival.

Manipur CM announces scheme for welfare of sportspersons and artists

● Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has

announced the biggest ever scheme for the

welfare of sports persons and artists of the State.

● ‘Chief Minister’s Akhannaba Sanaroising gi

Tengbang (CMAST)’ and Chief Minister Artist

Sing gi Tengbang (CMAT)’ would provide

benefits to thousands of sportspersons and

artistes of the State who have brought laurels to

the State and Country.

● Under the CMAST Scheme, a suitable

employment in government services will be

provided to sports persons, who have won

medals in notified disciplines in selected

International Sports events.

● In scheme for artists, CMAT is designed with a

view to encourage the artists in different fields

and targeted to cover 4000 artistes in a year.

title of the All England Open at Birmingham Arena .

● Axelsen outclassed Taiwan's Chou Tien-Chen in two

target to achieve sales of around 70 lakh

hybrid and electric vehicles by the end of

this year.

● Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of

Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India,

FAME scheme was initiated in 2015.

● The scheme was formulated to promote

the manufacturing of electric and hybrid

vehicle technology under the National

Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020.

● In the 2nd phase of the scheme, it is

aimed to support through demand

incentives about seven thousand E-buses,

5 lakh E-3 wheelers, 55 thousand E-4

wheelers passenger cars and 10 lakh E-2

wheelers.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

• Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (1920-1975) was the founding leader of Bangladesh and the country’s first Prime Minister.

• He is referred to as Sheikh Mujib or simply Mujib, the title ‘Bangabandhu’ meaning ‘friend of Bengal’.

• बंगबंिु शेि मुजीबुर रहमान (1920-1975) बांग्लािेश के संस्थापक नेता और िेश केपहले प्रिानमंत्ी थे।

Early Life

● Before joining politics, Rahman studied law

and political science in Kolkata and Dhaka,

and agitated for Indian independence.

● In 1949, he joined the Awami League, a

political party which advocated greater

autonomy for East Pakistan.

● A popular leader in East Pakistan, Rahman

played an important role in the Anti-Ayub

movement.

Death

● On 15 August 1975, Rahman was killed in a

military coup along with his wife and three

sons, including 10-year-old Sheikh Russel.

Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh

Rehana, survived as they were abroad at the

time.
