Semester One School Reports Student reports for Semester One are currently being prepared by teachers and will be distributed in the last week of Term. Remember a ‘C’ rating means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher. Parent teacher interviews (years P-6) will be held in week 2 of next Term. If you need to meet earlier please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting. Under 8’s Day- Laugh, explore, share! A free event for all children and families in the community to play for a morning of interactive experiences- painting, music, weaving, face-painting construction, kite making, obstacle course and more! Explore the inside of some emergency service vehicles. Join us on Wednesday the 8 June from 9:00am until 10:30am. Some things to know:

• Prep – Year 2 children are all participating. • All school children will start in their classroom so rolls can be marked first. • School uniforms are to be worn on the day. • It would be great to have lots of parents attend as there will be lots of prep kids moving around the Early

Rugby League Development Cup Well done to all students that gave their absolute best last Friday afternoon in the second round of the Rugby League Developmental Cup held at the Maleny State High School. This was our first team to make it through to the second round, of which we are very proud. Super Coach Mr Corkin and I were very pleased with the effort and defence displayed against Saint Michael’s from Caboolture who were too good on the day scoring a few late tries. A tremendous effort for a team that has only 2 students that play regular rugby league of a weekend. ASOT (Art and Science of Teaching) As part of ensuring we continue to develop a strong learning culture in our school it is essential that our staff have access to the leading edge in research based educational practices. Five members of our staff last week attended a 3 days of a 5 day professional development looking at the most effective methods of teaching. Sarsha, Jennie, Paula, Brent and Adrian look forward to sharing strategies and research based practices with other staff and implementing techniques learnt with our students. It is exciting to using the ASOT framework in combination with specific reading and writing strategies that we are currently focusing on. Children in our town Library Sunshine Coast Libraries encourages children to use the resources and facilities on offer. Supervision of children in the library is the responsibility of their parents or guardian. Sunshine Coast Libraries staff does not have the required qualifications, nor the legal responsibility to care for children who are left unattended. Parents and guardians are responsible for information or materials children may access through the Library Service including websites and online information. If a child, under the age of 12 is found to be unattended, the library may take action to resolve this situation. Many of our children utilise the Town Library after school which we welcome as it is a fantastic resource ideally located, and promotes the development of children’s literacy skills. Please support Maleny Library Staff by discussing with your children the importance of using respectful behaviour in the library and do not leave them unattended at or around the library.

From the Deputy Principal

Writing News As you know students have been using ‘Dynamic Dialogue’ in their writing over the last couple of weeks. There have certainly been some ‘Dialogue Dynamos!’ Ask your children to bring home some of their writing to share with you, or visit their classroom and get them to show you what they have done. ICAS Testing The second of the ICAS tests for 2016 is this Tuesday 31st May, students who have signed up for this will sit the Science test. Students who are attending Fanfare will sit the test on the Wednesday morning. Upcoming Red Carpet Theatre Company Performance for Prep – Yr 3 students: Red Theatre Company performance ‘Don’t Waste Your Waste’ for our Prep – Yr 3 students is this Friday 3rd June, at 9:15am-10:15am in the hall.

Classroom News Prep News The Preps have been busy designing and creating their wind ornaments. Each class set up their own recycling

stations to sort and manage the materials donated by families and recycled items from Prep. Materials were

carefully selected for their suitability to be outside in the wind and the rain.

We also had a visit from Scientist Peter from the CSIRO Scientists in Schools Partnership. Scientist Peter led us in an investigation of texture. The children tested sandpaper with different textures and also had fun observing how a texture can change when they added water to cornflour.

News from Year One Your children have been very busy. They have not only completed all tasks for their reports, but, have made a display of ‘Recycle and Reuse’ for the Maleny Show. Now we are participating in an activity called knitfest. This is where the children make a ‘Weaving activity’ which then will be displayed on our school’s front fence. If you have any spare wool, would you please consider donating it to the school for us to complete this activity? The students seem to be really enjoying their learning and it shows through our attendance performance, please keep up the good work. If your child doesn’t come to school please send in a note or ring the Absence Line Ph 54998633. This would be greatly appreciated. We are nearly half way through the year and it is great to see how well your child has settled into learning in Year One. Yours in Learning, Rosie Gatehouse, Kerry Lees, Kyle Sampson and Naomi Ellis. Year 2 News We had an exciting adventure into town for our history excursion last week. Students visited the Town Library where they were read a story and then headed to Obi Obi creek for a walk along the boardwalk. It was good to see such great behaviour and participation from all the students. Thank you to those parents who joined us on our excursion. The Year 2’s have also been busy creating a ‘Push/Pull’ toy for their Science assessment made out of recycled materials. Some of these were on display at the Maleny Show. 3A and 3B News We had a marvellous History Excursion to the Maleny Historical Village and were very grateful to all the volunteers who were there to show us around the cottages and artefact sheds. We watched some blacksmithing and then butter being made which we ate on bread! Glenferna, (the house) was relocated to the Historical Village last week after being on its original site for the last 113 years. History in the making! We then enjoyed our time at the Maleny Dairy, feeding the animals, watching the movie and seeing the milk being bottled. Thank you to Sally and Ross Hopper for your generosity in allowing two classes to visit at no cost. The weather was perfect for us on the day. Back at school we have been busily completing assessment tasks for the culmination of some units of work. These include Reading comprehension based on the book The Peasant Prince, (Mao’s Last Dancer) by Li Cunxin and Maths on counting, comparing and partitioning numbers. The students have also completed their Technology assessment on Designing, Constructing and Reflecting on making a Water Cooler. We are looking forward to the two incursions coming up in the next two weeks. News Flash: Yr 3B achieved a Highly Commended at the Maleny Show for their Best Collection of Guided Artwork entry. Kind Regards, Anne Coogan & Catherine Cameron

Chappy News GROWTH THROUGH PAIN Thank you to the families who showed their support last week during Chappy Week. I completed the 35km walk from Little Yabba Creek, all the way into Maleny. Although it was a gruelling and difficult task, I managed to complete it with a shoe held together by duct tape! I also found that during the hardest part, which was the climb up the Connondale range, I was at my strongest. What a lesson this taught me. My “training” leading up to the walk entailed a daily climb up and down the hill on my street. I felt that this prepared me so much to do the big climb up the range. I guess I could see how this related on a larger scale in my life and I took encouragement from the fact that no hard thing that we face on a daily basis, is ever wasted. I believe that everything in our lives is used to strengthen and shape our character. The second big lesson I learnt was that great pain always precedes great growth. So my encouragement to you today, is hang in there and look for the areas of growth in your life and choose to be thankful. Last week I ran a raffle at the Maleny Show. Mitre 10 kindly donated a beautiful cubby house to the value of $600.

Kids at Sea Musical UPDATE

Over the past two months parents Kyle McAuliffe and Gillian James have been busily

creating our ‘Kids at Sea’ Set design and making a number of the props. Our groundsman

Kerry Sherwell has made a new set of flats and is working on more staging needs.

We are nearly ready to paint the set. If you able to help with painting please send me an

email [email protected]

As part of the ‘Kids at Sea’ Set we are going to use the side

projection screens to display each Scene Title. Mrs James has

created seven pictures for students to colour, one for each Scene of

the Musical. There will be a colouring-in competition during Weeks

9 and 10 of this term. Students in each Year level will have a scene

picture to colour. The winning students will have their art work

displayed as part of the Set at our Performances of ‘Kids at Sea’ on

the 24th

and 25th

August. Other entries will be displayed in the Hall.

From Our Behaviour Support Teacher

I must admit it requires so much effort and organisation to try and ensure our family has four or five nights a week around the family table to eat. This however, comes with so many benefits that may not be seen in an individual sitting but when done regularly, begins to feel like a well-worn pair of shoes. I have three children, two at high school and one at primary school and I can honestly say that trying to ensure that all are at the dinner table most nights can be plain hard work. There are so many afternoons filled with sporting or other extra-curricular activities, while also juggling work commitments and the general chores of grocery shopping, paying bills, or cleaning around the house. It would be so easy just to grab something quick to eat and allow each family member the opportunity to eat when they have time to do so. The problem with this is not only do we tend not to think about the nutritional value our family is consuming, but also we aren’t allowing the opportunity for time to connect with one another and to share in one another’s lives. We aren’t ensuring we are present and carefully observing the thoughts and feelings of each of our family members. We aren’t hearing what is important to each one of us at a certain time. We aren’t listening to the words and actions of others and hearing how they problem solve these issues. We aren’t learning how to take turns in conversation and know what to say and when to say things appropriately to others. I am sure there are many more things that sitting around a table and eating dinner together brings. Yes, it does require a lot of effort and organisation, but it is effort and organisation well spent. In our family, one night each week, each of us is responsible for cooking and then putting a meal on the table. In order for this to occur, we have to ensure that each child has a night that is free of any extra-curricular activities and that myself or my husband are home to support them in organising the meal. We have to also be prepared to ensure the ingredients needed for these chosen meals have been bought. This takes time at the beginning of each week to ensure that meals are discussed and ingredients are bought. This is only part of the organisation of time together. We also have to ensure that the children’s and our extra-curricular activities and work, work around dinner times. When extra-curricular activities eliminate any family time, then it is time to re-think these activities or make changes. It is a constant battle to ensure that each family member’s extra- curricular activities aren’t impacting on all other family needs. Six out of seven nights my family are at home no later than 5.30pm…. Therefore our family dinner tends to be around 6 to 6.30pm. This allows us all time to sit and catch up for at least half an hour to an hour most nights. As you can see, it requires much planning and organisation, however, it is worth every cent as this precious time together will reap rewards that cannot simply be measured. Deb Price. Support Teacher for the Hinterland.
